Dear Devs: Please remember the female players

Post » Mon Feb 21, 2011 1:33 pm

Did you really find it insulting? I'm basically a dude, I mean in the sense of my personality yet I didn't find that insulting in the least :/

Insulting to women, implying that they are...erm... not sure how to say it. "Girly" for lack of a better word.

Honestly if it wont garner Bethesda any more income and wont matter to the vast majority of fans, I doubt they would implement something.

Lets see, owning a house has been in since Daggerfall, collect items has been a major part of at least the last two games, as has been appearance. These are all things that are important to the game and veteran players and contribute to the game as a whole. Adding, the right sound or texture to the game doesn't directly give Bethesda any more income, but all these things come together to make the final product.

Perish the thought of a girl being girly. I think it's safe to say that a woman's non stereotypically girly-ness can already be seen in the fact that we play video games, which is a traditionally male-dominated activity. As I'm sure it's evident, I'm a chick and I also didn't find the OP's assumptions insulting in the least, even though I don't agree with all her suggestions.

Certain people are too sensitive.

And when did I ever say these things were not important? Dont be so quick to try and attack a general statement buddy. Ive played TES. I know whats in it.

Mr. Vampire hit the nail on the head. These aren't "female" issues - as many of the guys posting in this thread have attested. There's no need to generalise at all - as many of the male posters in this thread (and others which have brought up these issues) want these things too. I don't want to be seen as "basically a dude" because of the way I enjoy games - there's no need for those kind of stereotypes when enjoying a game.

[Edit]: @ Imayroam: The fact that this may not be seen as "girly" is more reason not to make it about gender - I just want to play the game, not have people assume that we all play a certain way because of our six. Like I said - it's the OP's opinion, and that's fine; just don't make it a gender issue. There's no need.

But maybe it is a good idea to have something like this brought up. Obviously, there seems to be some sort of ignorance of just how non-stereotypical male and female gamers are. At least some people who used to think, "Oh, well, guys don't care about these sorts of things because they're men!" might now realize, after reading male gamers' responses, that their previous assumptions were wrong, which might lead to an avoidance of these gender specific issues. I simply think there's no reason to come off as offended (I mean, c'mon, it's a stereotype- if you're going to get offended by every person who believes in them, you're going to spend a lot of your time being angry).

@ wastedwreck: I think you're being sarcastic, but even if you're not, YES. I play on the PS3, so no awesome mods for me. My brother complains about the same thing when designing his characters. Oblivion kinda svcked as far as that went.

Well I'm male and I have to admit I also want a lot of pretty hairstyles for my male and female characters.

I mean,... you can only fight dragons when the hairdo is perfect, can't you?

But all of these things have been brought up before, and not by someone waving a banner of gender. Like I said before, saying something and saying it on behalf of a gender is pointless - people were saying these things before without bringing gender up. Any dev who sees that an idea is really popular (such as houses and their management, a topic that comes up quite often) isn't going to dismiss it just because the person who started the topic/or is commenting is male/female, so I don't see why it was brought up.

Dear devs, you heard the women's side, now it's our turn:

1) Player CASTLES. Why would I want anything less than that?
2) Mead halls. Come on, you promised.
3) Tavern Fights. And lots of drunken Nords!
4) Like, really manly armor. I want steel and dead animals wrapped around my muscles.
5) Emotional simplicity. None of that romance crap.
6) Charging a dragon by horse in a real epic way. Maybe on several horses because they die from exhaustion, that would be awesome.

I suppose. But perhaps the better course next time would be to ignore it?

@ Walex: picture it, your character brandishing a sword, decked out in shiny, powerful armor, their hair billowing in the wind like in a shampoo commercial - that sounds like the ideal way to fight dragons to me.

Lol nope - if someone makes a post where they decide to label what they think are appropriate requests specifically for my gender, I'll point out that they aren't speaking for me, and that others who have for some reason been left out of the OP because of their fiddly bits may want that too :P

im just curious, how would you look "womanly" in a robe, anyway?

you're draping a large cloth over your body, and the women of TES arent exactly curvy, they look like men even when they're naked... so, not much you can do about that.

i do like the idea of better decorating options, though... i'd like to decorate my house with armors and weapons, etc... i mean, why buy houses when all they're really good for is storage?

thats why in oblivion, i mostly just stuck with the waterfront shack, it had all i needed for storage, and it was easy to get to, cheap too.

hopefully they'll have improved housing options in this game.

i mean, if we're going to be allowed to cook, farm, mine, cut wood, etc... may as well give us proper homes we can do stuff with, as well, right?

i'd kinda like a house with a forge outside where i can do my smithing... im probably hoping for too much, though.

well, guess we'll have to wait and see what bethesda have in store for us.

I would like to point out that even thought the OP generalizes her list as things that most female players would like, it is all her opinion. She is stating what she would like to see in the game and for some reason is saying that, because she is female, this wishlist applies to all or most other females. This is not true, as likes/dislikes of parts of the game will vary from person to person regardless of gender. The title of the post says, "Please remember the female players" when a more accurate title would be, "Please remember me and the particular grievances that I have." Using the fact that you are female to have more attention paid to your own personal opinions isn't the right way to go about it.

My opinion on the title topic:
Personally, I believe that female and male characters should be treated equally; no special game mechanic or items for either. If I pick up a pair of magic trousers, I expect to see my character wearing trousers when I equip them; not magically transform into a skirt. This was probably the biggest (and one of the only) gripe for me in Oblivion/Fallout 3/New Vegas, as it was the only part that discriminated by gender for no good reason. Pants should not be male-exclusive just as skirts shouldn't be female-exclusive. I mean, you give us the chance to really fine-tune our character's face/hair etc., and then you don't let us wear the clothes we want?

As far as the other points made by the OP, I just don't see how they relate to the issue of female gamers being 'forgotten' or not getting treated fairly by developers. If someone could bring up real instances of devs treating female players unequally, then this discussion would be more on topic.

Speaking of female issues...

Female characters should totally have the special ability of the menstrual cycle. One week we're weaker, and one we're a force to be reckoned with (minus the disposition drop for NPC interactions :sadvaultboy: ).

Damn, how could I forget the virgins?!

Oh, and the metal songs. I... I guess the men's list will have to be longer than the women's list.

Yeah, like He-man xD.

Both would be nice.

My heroic nord fighter slays a dragon and what is his reward: a scantily clad virgin lies within a pool of gold.
I could live with that.

I've always wondered about that. Like, here I am exploring a dungeon... oh, snap, is that cramping I feel coming on? Dilemma: do I continue beasting goblins, or do I go find a bush to hide behind? Luckily, games always seem to bypass that particular part of a woman's life...

@ Walex: You know, I'd like to see a scantily dressed female in a TES game anyway. The last one's were in Morrowind, I think? I don't remember seeing a single scandalous woman in Oblivion.

As a lady myself, I'd like to add something to what you said about clothing. It would be really nice if pants and skirts are totally separate items. If it is pants on a man, its pants on a woman. Same with skirts, well I suppose it could be a kilt on a man. But I'd like to be able to wear pants occasionally.

Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase!!!! I hope they do listen to that!

i agree with EVERYTHING kaydot said... I WANT EQUALITY BACK!!!

if im playing as a big, burly, hairy old nord... i want the choice to wear a skirt and blouse!

if im playing as a beautiful altmer maiden, i wanna be able to wear manly pants!

bring back the total freedom we had in morrowind, bethesda!!! stop being sixist and restrictive!
