Dear Devs: Please remember the female players

Post » Mon Feb 21, 2011 6:02 am

I was not saying with any certainty that there'd be sixually dimorphic animations, just that Fallout 3's precedent indicated a likelihood.

And the irrational pessimism alarm went off when I reached this part of the post:

...in Skyrim it's a story about DRAGONS, so why bother with female models, everyone is supposed to be saving the world, not looking at npcs *eye roll* that seams to be favorite Bethesda approach to NPCs and player appearance in general so far.

Okay, my own female personal opinion on what I would like:

1. The Powers of Estrus. For one week out of the month my personality lowers by 10 points, and during that week I get a special Frenzy spell which I can only cast on myself.

2. A full kitchen so I can make Power Brownies, which work like Feather potions. But, I can just eat three a day. If I accidentally eat more, they have a Burden effect.

3. A special Charm spell which only works on men, and only if I'm not currently burdened by excess Power Brownies.

I'm a male player, but I'd love in-game journaling. It really helps roleplaying to be able to write down your character's thoughts. :)

That... actually could be done with the Perk system. :lmao: Assuming that the conditionals system introduced with FO3's spell/perk system is back again (in all likelihood, those are pretty handy).

EDIT: Just remembered that Frenzy doesn't work on the Player for obvious reasons, since the effect screws with AI settings Maybe a movement/attack speed boost?

I'm a female, and the only thing in the OP's post that I agree with is #6.

My personal take on these:
I tend not to spend time in a house - I'm too busy adventuring and questing.
I'm indifferent toward banking.
I prefer practical clothing with a dash of aesthetics. Can't fight daedra in a dress! I wouldn't put my character in a dress mainly because it isn't very impressive, it makes my character look weak and useless. Dagon would be laughing his head off as my character attempted to repair a ripped hem during a boss battle.

As a female gamer, I don't want to see armor that shows lots of skin and is meant to appeal to the male audience. I want my armor to look kick-ass. Hellgate: London got that right.

I'm indifferent about armor sets. I don't care if my armor pieces don't match. In fact, a little asymmetry can look pretty darn cool.

The reason I capitalized IN GENERAL is because that's how I see most of those items as it pertains to the differences in the male and female species.

Male and Female are different species?

You mean sixes right?

And I agree with all your ideas, kinda sixist to say most men wouldn't want your ideas in an RPG though.

Except number 6, never noticed that one.

Is it not true? In Oblivion everyone was supposed to be looking at FORESTS :D While environment was done brilliantly the character models and animation are the most backwards par of the game, they are whey below the average level for the industry at the time of the games release. The same is true for Morrowind - he have advertisemants swinging in the wind, but character hair are stiff as a brick. And we have more bedding options on the bed than NPC heads of one gender for one race, I counted :D
Don't take me wrong - the fact that Bethesda has it's customary faults and weak points does not mean that Skyrim will be a bad game, I love Morrowind to bits despite the char models, and if Skyrim is as interesting I'll love it to, but that does not mean that I expect it to be perfect - nothing is.

I'm a mage, I can bit anything in dress (which is not to different form wearing a robe, only more stylish), and high heals (who needs comfortable footwear when levitating?) And if they don't take me seriously... Who cares when they are practically a walking corps already since the moment I got the quest? :D So I'm all for including varied dressing options . That sad, even I wouldn't be bashing a dragon in "metal underwear", so we may skip that. But please include fur coats, it's Cold in Skyrim. :D

1. Houses. I loved having my houses in Daggerfall forward. Of all TES series, Obilvion had the best ways to decorate the house but it was extremely clumsey (took me 30 minutes to get all my useless keys into a bowl on the table). It would be nice if decorating was a bit easier to do. Perhaps have some furniture choices or the ability to pick a color for draqes, etc.

Sure, why not.

2. Banking. I loved banking in Daggerfall. It was much more realistic to have to deposit gold into the bank and withdraw it to spend it. The loan thing was fun too. Perhaps some enhancement to that as well

Realistic, but not necessary I think.

3. Clothing. It really bugged me that when I put a robe on in Oblivion, I looked exactly like a man. To look like a lady, I basically had to put a dress on.

Sure.

Clothing/armor SETS. It would be nice to be able to keep a set of armor or a set of town clothing on a key so I could switch between the two more easily.

Maybe, but not essitional I think.

5. Journaling. It would be nice to have the ability to keep a written journal in game. Something to keep my own notes, reminders to check something out later, questions as I move through the world and don't want to forget to work on.

Would be nice. You could have two sections, one of your own, and one of the game.

6. Voice consistancy. It was really annoying to talk to a begger who had a scratchy voice when they asked for for a coin. When you asked them a question, their voice completely changed - it was a totally different actor.

I don't think it will be an issue as they are hiring more voice actors this time around.

And for me personally as a moderate combat player who more enjoys the story line, beautiful graphics, emersion into the game world as opposed to dying all the time, please keep the "difficulty" slider. Someone had suggested that they don't "dummy down the game" but have the ability to dummy it down if you want/need to. I thought this was a great feature in Oblivion and when my character got too buff to make anything a challange, I would notch the slider up a bit to spice things up.

Side note: I absolutely love what I've read and seen so far. I will drive my family NUTS talking about this game for the next 10 months!

I think it would be cool to see a all female warrior cult, dedicated to the earth mother, that run naked and screaming into battle, like the ancient Celt women. It terrified the Romans.

The OOO mod for Oblivion had a sort of Amazon Women faction in it. They handed me my rear on a plate at low levels. It was a blast trying to outsmart them.

I usually play male Bretons, so I couldn't wear their armor. Ladies only.

Well, Kyne is a big god for them, being the widow of Shor, so maybe there's a woman warrior cult devoted to her in Skyrim.

What is it with some of the women gamers in the Skyrim forum? You seem to be setting the your equality back a hundred years when you keep suggesting that popular concepts are exclusively the preserve of women. Or do you just enjoy pointing out that you're a woman? Because it is 2011, nobody is going to be surprised that you have learned how to use a computer.

I'm not saying this applies to Beth, but I'm sure some game developers do decide to try and appeal more to demographics they might be missing out on. A list of features to attract more female gamers specifically might be seen as a worthwhile read for a passing dev.

Hm... this is half-stereotype, half things everyone would want. Don't see the point in making it gender-related. Besides, everyone knows that all nerds are androgynous. That's what makes us cool. You'd be hard pressed to find a Hugh Jackman or Paris Hilton style nerd, I reckon.

Yeah! Although Bethesda never really went for the Useless-sixy-Armor-For-Female-Thingy, which I appreciate, armor does look too manly on females.

Deception is a warrior's ruse!

And for more grown up stuff... me want some naked nord... coz me a witch! (hairy chest and all... yeah, I'm old school, but I like men, not boys!)

So you don't want sixualised female stuff, just sixualised male stuff?

There are a few things that I absolutely love about TES games that IN GENERAL, most men wouldn't care about.

WTF? What do you think that men care about? I think that you've unnecessarily sixualized an inane issue.

Yes please - berserks, and half naked fighting! Should be right up Nordic alley, quite manly and a good source for entertainment for female player!

Great. I just love to be reduced to a vain, money and material-goods loving drama queen who loves to decorate, wants to write about it, and doesn't want to fight the bad guys! All because I'm a girl!

Way to proliferate sixist stereotypes.

This is a great idea. Now that you mention it, I can't believe it hasn't been modded.

In Morrowind the skirts looked cool on male characters when combined with armor. Gave some sort of Paladin/Templar look.

Battle Skirts! That was a mod I often used in Morrowind.

Also, I agree: men should be able to wear skirts, women should be able to wear pants. Egalitarian fashion in Tamriel, now!
