Dear Diary...

I think it would be epic if you could have your own little journal which you could write yourself about all your characters adventures simply for roleplaying purposes.
So what do you think?

Since I've seen it in the replies how would you feel about custom map notes?

I'd like this, but it would be hard on the consoles: I expect few console players would ever use it.

If I wanted to write something down I'd probably use a word processor later on, although being able to add notes to maps would be nice.

Yeah, I always thought it would be cool to be able to write your own notes or do things like that. PC and consoles are all able to type things in, it should be possible as far as I know. I know there are mods for Oblivion that implement this.

I disagree as I'm a hardcoe role-player and I'm on PS3 and also they could write it on consoles by using the same way they use sending messages

Add custom map markers to this and I am completely sold. That said, what I'd like is for quests to also be visible in the journal, say appearing as a separate section, so it's like the character is also updating that.

Speaking of map markers, we should be able to set as many map markers as we want.

Gosh, and what if somebody finds my in-game diary and tells everybody what I've been writing about that handsome Nord guy at the tavern? :blush2: That would be so embarassing. Nobody would take me seriously as Dovahkiin anymore...

I think attempting to implement a personal journal feature, which would really be more used by PC players, would take away time and resources I would rather have them spend on other game play development. :) A map notation feature though, would be sweeeet! I would love to have the ability to have half a dozen map pins I could use, to just note places I want to go back to or check out later. :)

I don't really think it would be that hard to implement. I've programmed things like this before, it's not rocket science. In fact, text editors that stamp the date and time automatically are one of the easiest things like this to add to a game.

Would be nice but the generation of first-person shooter peoples need stuff to be dumbed down, just like Oblivion from Morrowind, or it simply wouldn't sell

I'd like this feature. I had a notebook full of comments, ingredient lists and maps when I first played Morrowind. The game was so huge and enjoyable that I felt like using pen and paper regardless the in game journal.

it's such a paint to type on consoles, so this will probably only be used by PC gamers, in which case there will likely be a mod for it, which a pc Gamer can get. I don't see why it's necessary to be in the vanilla

It's a nice idea, but for me it's so much easier to jot notes down on good ol' paper with a pen. Map markers on the other hand, that could be useful. I hated how I couldn't Mark things as Explored or Hard Enemy in past games.

Map marking was done before ES even started. Anyone remember Ultima Underworld? You could write on the map.

But I mainly want it for role-playing purposes like writing your characters backstory or simply as a in-game diary to add more immersion to the game rather than pen and paper. It could also self update with side quests.
Just making ideas :tops:

Nice ideas, both of them :goodjob:
In Morrowind it really was necessary to put things on paper, especially with the vanilla journal who wasn't that clear. In Oblivion the hand holding was so forced that I didn't need to write anything, it was all there, in huge font, I didn't even need to read the book because the quest update did it for me.

Far Cry 2 had a great example for a map. Whenever you pull out your map your character will literally pull up a map and a satelite gps to triangulate positions and stuff very cool and immersive. Makes me forget I'm playing a video game.

I seriously doubt something like this would be in the vanilla version, but I'd love to see a mod for it. That would be awesome for roleplaying purposes, plus the useful option to write on the map. Great idea.

Initially I've been against it, but now I'm sold. Scribbling things on a piece of paper would probably be faster, but in game journal is much better roll-play wise. If it is implemented, it'd be really cool to see an option to copy/paste passages from books. Doing so probably require to drop some of diary auto fills and make reading books essential to completing at least some quests, therefore making the game to complicated for some people. So not gona be implemented. And that's something that's gona be hard to mod in because it requires rewriting the whole quest structure.

P.S. Sorry for crappy English. Not a native speaker.

It don't essentially want it as a quest recorder more of an optional diary for roleplayers like myself. Here is an example

'This man, Ulav, apparantly knows about my families death but according to other townsfolk he is a very powerful individual but also paranoid also he isn't going to invite me into his home.
...Not Yet'
Things like that, creating your characters backstory.

Yes & yes. It's not like having a simple in-game Notebook equivalent would alter some far-reaching gameplay balance.

Yeah, I would enjoy if we could make our own journal entries. I had a mod for Morrowind that let me do that, and it was helpful and fun.

I'm not so sure about multiple map markers but sort of pins like sort of marking 'come back later' spots like you find a dungeon it may have some great loot inside but tough enemies guarding it so you say to yourself 'I'll come back at a later level when I can PWN thee guys'
