Dear modding O.G.'s and map maker wannabe's,

Post » Wed Nov 11, 2009 9:49 am

I really hope there is an FC3. Nothing would make me happier. Only because I am not banking on Crysis 2 having a console map editor that my computer savvy friends and I can map on. I loved FC2 because I only used it as a creative outlet for multiplayer maps. The map editor interface was perfect; fast and easy to use. I can put out a professional (MW2) quality multi-player map in a month or two, single handed.

I only really played with other map makers so we had a great time and didn't get too caught up in the imperfections of the single-player or multi-player details. We did not compete fighting on the map but instead with our maps. Finding compelling and creative ways to use objects, brushes and environments to paint the perfect map was the only challenge.

Our biggest challenge was creating a map that was both aesthetically gripping and game play perfect. Often particular map makers would lean one way or the other, strong on one half and marginalizing the other. This caused an overabundance of un-balanced and bland maps. Kinda killed a lot of the community but also motivated a lot more to design their own maps. A lot easier said than done.

If Crysis 2 gives us the ability to create our own map on the console like Far Cry or on the PC like Crysis, I highly encourage anyone reading this to spend the time needed to learn how to create your own map. The moment you see 16 people running and gunning on your map and having a great time, the reward with be worth 10 times the effort.

I really hope that Crysis 2 will have a map editor on the consoles, I think it will drastically add to the sales.

What would be the best though, is if Crytek bought back Far Cry from Ubisoft. :D I look forward to Far Cry 3, but I am very sketchy on whether or not I will be purchasing it. Far Cry 2 was a bit of a let down.

I didn't even think of that. If they got FC back, I bet it would be amazing. I think I heard Ubisoft was working on FC3 though. Maybe a few years to go if Crytek does take control again.

will never happen becuase
cryengine 3 has too much of a complicated map editor (for pc at least) and it will take a loong time to make it simplified and crysis 2 wont take that long to be released

Not really. It would just be a simplified version of the PC editor. I think it would be well worth the time and effort for Crytek to include a console editor in Crysis 2. :)

Ubisoft has been quiet on Far Cry 3, aside from the "we are working on it" statement/rumour from a year ago. I bet Crytek could still buy it back before Ubisoft develops too much.

No. No console editor has been mentioned for Crysis 2 - and there's no reason to think there will be one. A while back they said the reccomended system for Sandbox 3 was a Quad Core, 4gb ram a 64bit OS and a GT200+ GPU. Basically WAY beyond what any of the console can do.

Honestly, im getting sick of people using FC2 as a reason for C2 to have a console editor. Its just not going to happen. FC2 used Dunai engine, NOT CRYENGINE. Its totally different. Secondly, the FC2 editor is fail in comparison to CE2. There isn't even AI in the FC2 editor.

Please, lets drop the argument about this can or can't do that. You will notice in my thread post, I stated I am not counting on Crysis having an editor for console, this was supposed to eliminate whiners from commenting about how l33t PC is and how lame consoles are. If you want to talk about mapping or modding, please do. I would like to hear some different perspectives on map creation or how it has effected you as a player or mapper. Thanks.

I quite like console map editors, Far Cry on the 360 was where I started with level design.

You could do funny things like create an extremely sharp hole in the ground which allowed you to glitch right through it, and go under the map. Seems lame now but it was awesome at the time.

Not to mention the potential for maps based solely on trucks and pipe bombs. :)

The console editor isn't meant to do the same thing the PC editor does...it's supposed to be simplified and optimized for the consoles. Pretty much just placing assets on a map and some terrain tools. Its not like you will be importing textures and moddeling assets on a console. Map making by just placing assets and terrain tools, adding spawn points and weapon drops, is not heavy on the system. To just have that on the console, would be great! It's not like anyone expects a MWLL mod on the consoles. :D

Just something simple, light, and easy for the console owners to tap their creative minds and improve the community.

@ Enfadel: I think you are looking for crymod.com, if you are looking for opinions on modding and whatnot. :)

@Talon, second that.
@Cry-ruan, lol we were trying to find a way to incorporate that underground technique into a map because it seemed really useful. Unfortunetly it was really inefficient because the ladder system used to cross boundries made a huge bottle neck that people can camp hard core. We found a way to go under ground and walk into a wall of water, if you saw someone do this, it looked like they were walking and then suddenly started flying (swimming in place). Tried to make an elevator system out of this but it was too hard to navigate in the dark water.

<< can get underneath the map without any editor at all, jus drive the lil tank in onslaught, right up the hill first half before station, over the top down other side and over the edge. swim back under map, only thing is, no way back up :-(
I hope There will be no Far Cry 3
Why?

I hope there is, because this game has great potential, but in the end just didn't do so well. I have a feeling they are working on it quietly.

I believe that if you can map, then you're gifted. Yes, anybody can map as long as the editor is available, but would they take the most out of it? Well, certainly some of us would, but others would simply play around with it for fun.

Plus, if you're really that great at mapping, some employers may very well be interested in taking you on-board their company in the level design department. And that is even better.

I hope they add in some sort of map editor to the game, if it doesn't come to console, then I'm just hoping it comes to PC.

I know that Crytek has hiring contests on crymod. The most talented modders get a follow up interview and potential employment. ;)
