Dear Obsidian, please stop freaking me out. Thanks.

I remember going up to the Goodsprings graveyard to grab the snowglobe, and I was so creeped out by the whispering noises that I ran out of there as fast as possible.

I also found Vault 34 to be a rather scary experience. I wondered afterwards why I found this particular place so tense (other popular "scary" places, like Dunwich in Fallout 3 did nothing for me). And I came to the realization that it must be the blanket of radiation in the area that just sets me on the edge. I can't remember if it ever goes over 1 rad per sec, but even so, it just gives all the tension in the world to the area and makes it feel much more hostile.

I felt similarily (though less so) about creeping through Searchlight.

Ugh that is exactly what made me despise the place so much. If it wasn't for the two wonderful guns:
Spoiler

The All-American and the Pulse Gun

waiting as a reward at the end I would personally never go down there :cryvaultboy:
The combination of constant radiation and the snarls+padded footsteps of the ghouls gives me the heebie-jeebies. Going through Dunwich without my companions was horrible but going through Vault 34 without companions was MUCH worse. Also I think the reason why most people don't find searchlight that frightening is because you always have the option to just fast-travel out. You don't have that option in Vault 34. You are totally underground, walking tight and dark corridors infested with snarling mindless zombie-like ghouls, while you have a timer ticking at the top left of your screen saying you only got a certain amount of time before you run out of rad-x and radaway and you die. If the ghouls don't get you the damn radiation will.
The only thing that could have made Vault 34 worse would be the reintroduction of Fallout 3 Ghoul Reavers. The damn things are nearly impossible to kill at later levels even with Fawkes and his Gattling laser.

I love games that have the ability to freak me out. That's just good design...

Vault 34 was pure awesome with the way it's set up. You're forced to deal with both ghouls and radiation. The ghouls force you to be cautious while the radiation makes you try to speed things up. I swear that's one of the few places I've almost died in, and I love it!

Just finished Vault 34 and it was a good time. As soon as I realized the rads were not going away, I got the flamer out and just ran through the place tearing it up. My flamer is at like 20% quality now. Put it to good use.

I'd say Vault 34 was a fun bit of resource management annoyance, but scary? nah...

Nothing beats meeting your first bloodsvcker in the apogrom underground. No Ghoul can beat a mutant that can turn invisible and move around faster than you can turn around. Resource management wise, Vault 34 doesn't have anything on going into the red forest or the Sarcophagus. All in all, it's pretty easy to do if you have enough anti-radiation equipment and meds to take it slow.

Problems with the Overseer room in V34? Bring a EMP 'nade. Deals with the turrets real quick. And then the Overseer is just an over-HP'd bullet sponge that can't reach you since he's stuck on the raised desk.

And I solved the problem of the regular Ghouls with liberal application of Multiplas.

Also... V34 scary? Dead voices at the graveyard scary? Psssh. You want scary, play the Shalebridge Cradle level in Thief 3.

Apart from Vault 34 being hellish. I found Vault 34s 'What happened here...' backstory to be very said, it's obvious the Overseer cared for the Vault, and the people were being ignorant children wanting their way :l

Lol.. with you there with the cradle, but go back even further to Thief 1 and play the Haunted Cathederal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONQTE-Gc4Pk

Now that was scary....

First, Vault 34 freaked me out, mainly due to my IRL Zombie Phobia, and the new Feral sound effects dont help :stare:

Now I wander into Camp Forlorn Hopes graveyard (which I've never gone down there before) to search for graves to dig up, and instead I come to find I have voices of the dead whispering at me. Thanks for making my heart race Obsidian.....again. :cryvaultboy:

I'll admit, the feral ghouls there and the sounds was freaky. I have never been to Camp Forlorn Hopes Graveyard so I am gonna go there next time I play because I wanna hear the dead whisper. I will probably seriously freak out though :P. I don't have a zombie phobia though, it's funny because I like the zombie games and movies but thinking about it in real life does freak me out.

Ughhhh playing deadspace with the lights turned off, surround sound system, in a college dorm where you are sitting on a sofa with a girl to your left and your college roomate (guy) to your right is never a good idea. The girl screams at the scary moments and the guy scares you at the most inopportune times. This coupled with the fact that its playing "twinkle twinkle little star" while you are walking a blood infested corridor still gives me chills. I can't listen to twinkle twinkle littel star anymore :cryvaultboy:

Vault 34 was indeed freaky. Nothing quite like running around a quiet corner only to come face to face with a raging ghoul. Great fun.

I do have to say that for me personally, nothing can top the ocean house in Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for a frightening video game sequence. Played it five years ago and it still gives me a shudder when I recall the details of that portion of the game.

Vault 34 was certainly tough, but I detest the cheap trick of having enemies spawn out of thin air. That spoiled it a bit for me.

I agree, I don't like randomly spawning enemies coming out of nowhere. It just feels like a cheap attempt to make you jump.

The way your companions have a habit of charging off into the irradiated dark just as the air is filled with a gaggle of blood-curdling zombie screams, leaving you likely lost, alone and slightly terrified is one of the many things I love about Vault 34.

The sirens in a few of the musics freaked me out till I got used to them. I live in a constant state that the apocalypse is about to happen and hearing sirens doesn't help!

Scariest game I've ever played. Scarier than most movies I've ever seen.

I've not been to Vault 34 yet. But I'm looking forward to it now.

The only thing I found terrifying about stalker is how terrible AK-74 is in Priyad......it is even worst when you find out 5.45mm cost you an armed and leg.

The ghouls in this vault don't creep me out. They piss me off. I get so... god... damned... angry when I have to fight through those stupid [censored] [censored] glowing ones and their infernal [censored] nuke bombs that I walk out of there, go to Strip, and KILL EVERYONE just to feel better.

Scary is not the word I'd use.

Infuriating is much, much better.

If Vault 34 is for pros only, then I must be a natural pro 'cause I had no problems with that irradiated hellhole.

I was the same, the biggest problem was getting rid of the Rad-ex addiction and fixing up Pushy after I punched all the feral ghouls' faces in.
