Death of a Companion

Post » Wed Sep 18, 2013 10:32 pm

It saddens me to say that the guy who had been with me since the start of my adventure has passed.

I do not remember his name off hand...began with an F and you meet him at Riverwood. He is one of the men who fancies that shop lady...

Anyway...despite not remembering his name, I felt really attached to him. Having taken a quest from the Companions to kill a bandit leader, to prevent my ass from getting kicked, I set off a fireball scroll spell and my friend happened to be in the way...RIP friend. I didn't mean to.

Anyway, has anyone else become attached to their companions? And has anyone managed to lose every companion in the game yet?

The character you are thinking of is http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Faendal

I don't use followers for my characters anymore as they tend to get in the way.

Because of FF, I have my two companions set to never die and ignore FF (another reason is to avoid them fighting each other), but that doesn't mean I'm any less attached to them.

http://static1.nexusmods.com/110/mods/110/images/26393-1-1351950599.jpg is Arinbjorn's (my character) girlfriend. She's an alchemist, bard, and loves sticking a bolt inside someone's head  (exclusive crossbow user).

http://static2.nexusmods.com/110/mods/110/images/24666-1-1348718755.jpg is Arinbjorn's father. Separated from his family's caravan 20 years ago by a bandit ambush, Hoth dedicated almost that entire time on looking for them, without success. In the meantime, he sold himself as a sellsword, in order both to survive and to have a work that would allow him to visit all of Skyrim.

When both Hoth and Arinbjorn discovered (luckily almost at the same time) that one of the relics of their family stolen from their caravan was in possession of a mage in Morthal, they both travelled there, and fortune finally smiled upon them when they got re-united

As a member of the Brondolf Clan, Hoth is proficient in both physical and magical combat (one-handed, Alteration and Restoration). He likes to paralyze his foes at the beginning of the combat and slowly slaugher them with his Absorb Health sword.

I love companions and always saddened when they die, but usually they die well against overwhelming odds and be sure to have a proper memorial to them.

I always take great care when it comes to follower equipment so, unless I set out to do something really strange, I don't lose any. In fact, the couple of times I've lost a follower, namely Lydia, was when:

  • I tried to go through Nchuand-Zel at level 25on master, with perk points all over the place, without enchanted equipment of any kind, or fortify combat skill potions. She went down because of a poison DoT effect.
  • I was checking out mounted combat and went up against two giants and two mammoths at level 20. I believe I killed her myself that day.

It wasn't even her fault

I befriended him in the early parts of the game, took him as a follower then killed him simy because some bandits attacked me in Riverwood. He became hostile towards me (i accidentally hit him), then i had no choice but to take him out.

I've had only one follower death that didn't lead to me reloading. That was when that brawler in Morthal died against a Storm Atronach near Markarth.

I don't use companions very much, but if I do, and they stick with me for a long time, their death saddens me. All I can do is pay my respects, say a few words, and then be on my way. Of course, I make the person or creature who did it pay.

It's you who kill your companions. They are protected, when they crawl on the floor the enemies lose interest in them and turn to someone else.

I'm sorry, but I couldn't get passed that. You begin with such an emotional bond, yet you forgot his name...

... I love it.

I was Devastated when Sven died, he'd been with me all of the way. From Bleak Falls to Blackreach, I was going to have him play at my funeral. But instead I sent all of his instruments with him at Bard's leap where I Fus Ro D... I mean... er... where he fought an epic battle against... hmm... two dragons but was thrown into the abyss by one of the beasts... Yeah that.

I too value my companion Annekke. I discovered an indisposable "Active Effect" that protects your companions from you. I cant say anymore about it or where I got it "spoiler" . I will say that it is not a console command or mod. Search for this gem...make it your quest :twirl:

LOL. Don't feel bad. He was a tool. Anyhow, now you can marry Camilla and you won't have to worry about that guy coming around the house at odd times... because she winds up having an affair with him behind your back.

I was sad when I lost Marcurio during one of my playthroughs. He was an arrogant know-it-all, but eventually I found his dialogue, as loaded with self-love as it was, entertaining. He died where most followers of mine usually die: deep in some charus/falmer den. I gave him a funeral (well, I ceremoniously chucked his body down a crevasse so that the falmer/charus wouldn't feast on his corpse.

I'm pretty sure that was intended... and that's part of what had me rolling too. Excellent post for sure.
