Debunking the meaning of life

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 11:39 pm

No such thing, i say. (as a pre-defined meaning i meanl)

I think the meaning of life is anything you want it to be.

It can be getting rich or fishing or computer games or education or nothing or leaving the country (mine) or anything at all.

That's my take on it ,contribue to this petty philosophy tread if you wish.

If there is no meaning of life, there can't be a meaning of life in ANY form, even "doing anything you want to do".

(In my opinion..) There is no "meaning of life" as in a set of orders, recommendations and goals for the human race and humans as individuals to follow and achieve in life.
Humans are here for the very same "reason" as animals: we just happen to exist. Our lives have the exact same purpose as cats or butterfiels have: none. Luckily as humans we understand that fact and it gives us a freedom to decide what we do with this ~1-100 years of our life.

For me "meaning of life" is such a trivial matter I don't think about it let alone let it affect my life. Sure, people have said that life without "meaning" is unhappy, but I don't feel depressed because of it. I do what I feel like is best and try to live a successful life

The meaning of life originaly was to reproduce.
Though nowadays, in the current society, it seems to be more about being succeful.

The meaning of life is 'cheese'. Simply, 'cheese'.

Yep.

My thought is not to wonder why but merely to enjoy it.

Two points -

Who says life needs a meaning? Suppose a series of chance events has brought our universe and, through microcosm, our lives to their current stages? Suppose we are free to choose and define meaning individually?

Also

We are mammals. We are sixually reproducing mammals. The purpose of our life, at a genetic level, is to procreate and ensure the survival of the gene pool.

My meaning is to create a program to discover the meaning of all meanings that may mean something, even if they sound mean it doesn't really mean it because the mean of the answers mean something more.

Who says life needs a meaning?

Apparently we all do since the question is frequently asked.

Folks, please don't bring religion into this. We can have a fun topic without it. Otherwise, it's locked. Let it be lighthearted and it stays.

I am going to delete the only post r/t religion, not because it's a bad post but because it can't be part of this discussion. Sorry.

Even if there is no meaning, we can still make one.

Is there a meaning? I don't know. Will there be a meaning? Most probable, it is human nature.

There isn't any meaning to life for me. Life is just "there", it exists, and when I die. I die. Nothing happens after death. I just cease to be. And I don't mean "nothing" as in darkness, or whiteness. I mean nothing, no consciousness. Like when you black out and wake up missing a few hours. Expect you never wake up.

Let's see if I can give my opinion and stay within guidelines..

Does life have meaning..

All life?

Because that includes a lot of life that isn't human, sentient, or allowed a voice in this discussion, so I'll provide it.

[ahem]
"Huh?"

sums it up nicely, added to that the rantings of us, the superior thinking beast on this rock, and you get this:

[ahem]
"Uuh.., whaa-?"

Which is to say that all our rantings on the matter add up to a collective pause before reverting back to or original reply of:

"huh?"

Because, simply put, the meaning of life, is to live it.
Animals know this, we call it instinct. But because w have to capacity to obsess over such things doesn't make the resulting answer any more difficult or complicated.

So to everyone who ends up at the end of their lives all bitter and thinking that they were kinda jipped because they didn't actually live it.. then they didn't get the meaning of it.

I have lived, and my son will be taught to live. It's my highest priority in life now a days.

There is no meaning. Life is meaningless. Everything we do is meaningless. Human life is ultimately meaningless. All life is ultimately meaningless. We will continue being meaningless until the world comes to a close.

Doesn't mean we can't enjoy our meaningless lives.

It's weird that you somehow squeezed the word "enjoy" into such a depressing comment. :(

Right, but if it is void of meaning that doesn't mean we can't make our own meaning right?

;)

Edit
Then would it not have meaning? Hahahah.... always a fun time in these threads.

ITT: Teenagers wax philosophical with useless questions.

Who gives a toss about the meaning of life? Only religious nuts as far as I'm concerned. Philosophy ought to go back to what it originally was...it used to be art, mathematics, science, theology, and politics all rolled into one. Philosophy used to be about asking things like "why do objects fall" and "how does slavery fit into a moral society". You used to have to be a polymath to be a philosopher...now days kids think they can armchair everything.

Meaning of life. Feh.

...an artifical assertion that says nothing. It is the same as to say the purpose of existence is to exist.
