Decals/Scars/Facepaint confirmed!

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:17 am

i hate the redguard armour. it looks completely offensive to tes. it looks like something out of some stylized mmo

Relax, it's just concept art. You can bet it will be a lot more toned down and realistic once it's finalized in the game.

I don't think they will let you decal your armor that would take a lot of work to make all the different armor sets and custom decals for them ... probably just scares and tattoos will be included, I can wait for this game with all the hype they have a lot to live up to so i think they feel the pressure to make it the best they can with the least glitches they can get!

I'm glad. It will really give the character customization more depth and enjoyability.

I don't think "scars" means "scarring". It sounded like it's something you can do when you create a character, considering the rest of the sentence was something like "during character generation.".

Scars and tattoos probably however strange if war/ facepaint is not changeable :)
Anyway a function like showracemenu makes it irrelevant.
Thinking of all the other fun moders can have with this like a sword with a kill counter, or gloves with a clock :)

it should be easy for bethesda to make values to differenciate between scars, facial features like frecles and old age, visual signs of disease, tattoos and paint/makeup

makeup/paint should be changeable often. tattoos should be hard to remove but easy to add (and can be recieved by factions). fur paterns for khajits should be hard/impossible to change, visual disease signs change with disease. freckles and old age unchangeable. i am not sure what happens to scars.

I have to say that I disagree with the interpretation of this video commentary. He said these exact words: "There's new systems for allowing decals and scars, face painting and just a lot higher resolution assets for generating all the characters in the game."

To me that means that the engine allows them to do this easily but not necessarily that the feature will be available to the player to create custom decals or scars. They could have meant that the game designers would be placing decals and scars and perhaps the player might acquire scars through combat. But I didn't hear any confirmation that we'd have any direct control over decals, scars, etc. I definitely did not get the impression we would be drawing custom insignias for our armor.

I am not saying that we will not have this ability. I am just saying that the video did not confirm in my mind that we'd be able to control such things.

Creating your own would require the construction set and a dds image program.
I assume you can choose during character creation, high chance of being changeable later like the barbers in Fallout, might also be some designs get unlocked think warrior tattoos.

Uh god. I would hate to see my favourite series become fable. I do like fable but I prefer TES and with no TES where will I be? Next we'll be getting hair styles from the barbers that actually grow your hair |-(

No that would be very silly, instead let's stick with the much more believable never growing hair for 100-500 hours you spend on a character which is god nos how many in game days, will ppl stop making comparison that don't even make sence, in ob you could put make up type shading to your character they just went the hole hog and set you do the lot, I think they've called them decals because how do you tattoo a scaly or a furry dude?! So face paint for the win. Get your battle crys ready!! See if they put this in there better be barber in towns I don't want face paint on all the time but when I'm dragon hunting it would be cool you retituralize the process, have your gear laid out in your basemant sort through it then slowly apply your war paint then meditate for a moment then awken it's dragon slaying time!!

face paint and facial (maybe even normal hairstye) should be changable tatoos should require either alot of gold to remove or some special magic guy in case you want to change them. I don't know all I know is I would like to mess with elves ears in character creation I dont think they should always be flat against the skull we should have option to make them stick out more from their heads maybe not like Elvaan in FF11 but at least enough to give the head more depth.

More info on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decal

If these are for applying to armor, robes, etc. I can see them being a very popular item for mods.

Wait, scars, beards(?), decals, and face/warpaints? (And, body customization as well?) Yesssssssssssssss! :flamethrower:

Wow, I'm going to spend hours on creating my character like in the Sims games! =) (Oblivion's facegen required too much tedious tweaking to make my girl look decent and even then, she didn't look as good as I imagined when she got out of the prison/sewers, lol.)

This art video is a cause for :celebration:

These are awesome news. Those three and tatoos were some of the stuff I really wanted in game (along with beards but these were confirmed really early) cause if well done, which I'm sure will happen, it does add a new level of customisation.

I love customization - especially as i spend so much time in the character generation menu - it's the best mini-game of them all

Piercings would be good too - the Morrowind Dunmer had great gold loops :)

Well Bethesda, if you follow through with all this (Considering how late in development the game is that shouldn't be an issue) then you've just ensured that I will spend an hour at the very least in character creation. Well done.

Note that I'm not being sarcastic, I am loving this :)

I didn't see it posted already, but what Matt said leading up to the decals/scars/facepaint comments was,

"... there's a lot more customisation than we've had in any previous game, for you setting up your character..."

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but that leads me to believe that "decals, scars, facepaint" may just have been examples he thought of from the game, and by no means the full extent of the character customisation systems in Skyrim. "A lot more customisation" than Oblivion sounds like a hell of a lot.

Not really, oblivion only had face sliders, skin toning (For what that was worth), hair styles and eye colours. That was it, that's not a lot. Almost every big budget title with customizable characters at the time did that and more.
I'm not expecting us to get more than what we have confirmed so far, which is a lot more than Oblivion had to offer.

I want scars. I want claw marks across my face like my avatar.
<====
Would like to stick an emblem on armour or a mask

Not too bothered about tattoos but would be cool nonetheless.

Am I the only person not entirely thrilled with the decal idea? Sounds kinda stupid honestly imo.

I dunno. I look at ALL the other armors that were in OB and MW, and I cant think of one that I looked at and said "I really wish I could decal this up".

Im gonna decal 'Dirty Dovahkiin' on the back of my armor so everybody knows who the boss is.

Edit*
I am all about customization though. Score for the fans who really wanted to see this.

I think the decal idea is good. It allows you to personalize your character better by adding a meaningful emblem to his armor.

The only bad side I see is that after Skyrim's release there are going to be many threads "What decal do you use in your armor?"
And then there are the usual Troll faces, Hello kittys etc. And videos about them in Youtube.
