No deco towers and walls on castles

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 1:49 am

I thought of one thing, that always bothered me a bit in Oblivion: On most (if not all) of the cities' castles there were many towers and walls that looked great, but couldn't be accessed in any way. There weren't even any permanently locked doors which could lead to them. I would even have preferred fake doors that you cannot get through, just to give you an idea how the deco parts of the castle are accessed. All doors did lead to the hall and some rooms nearby, but there wasn't any possibilty to get to the towers and walls.

I hope that in Skyrim you will be able to get anywhere in the castles (and other buildings for that matter) and there won't be any purely decorative towers.

What do you think about this?

Sorry for bumping, but doesn't anyone agree on this?

Full acess everywhere in castles is one of the minor things I'm now hoping for. If a dragon attacks the town castle, we should be able to get on te walls and towers and fight it off right?

I agree. Even if a tower is completely empty except for a staircase, i'd like it be able to get in. Little things like that add to the feeling of being in a vast, explorable world and not just an empty shell.

This does make sense. If Bethesda makes it where the doors can be flagged as "inaccessible" like in Fallout, they can do this. Or they could lock doors with a level of 100 that leads to nowhere like they did with that house where you steal that dudes diary.

Meh. Don't see a problem, there are plenty of buildings and places that look great in reality while I'm not allowed to go there, and no lack of them where I've never even seen an access door.

One of my biggest complaints about many games is the lack of correlation between the inside and outside. And how the inside is often poorly laid out.

Heck, this might seem minor to most people, but one of the things that bugged me the most about WoW was all the ruins and the fact that if you were to reconstruct them, you wouldn't actually have anything worthwhile.

A lot of times game buildings remind me a lot of Frank Gehry buildings. A shell stuck on top of an interior space with no real relation between the two.

We can't mount battlements and towers because of closed cities. They'd have to greatly increase the detail of what looks to be the land outside the city if you could see right over the walls, and then that would pretty much ruin the point of closed cities.

We should be able to access walls and towers in Ebonheart, Morrowind we were able to go up in many staircases which didn't lead to any place they just ended or had a door to the wall

They'd have to greatly increase the detail of what looks to be the land outside the city if you could see right over the walls, and then that would pretty much ruin the point of closed cities.

Thats a minor thing they should try to solve

And then they'd have to also surround them with invisible walls so you can't jump off the battlements outside the city.

Yes we should be able to access every part of a castle.

I believe Morrowind let you get inside the walls of pretty much every castle, and you could go up a spiral staircase within each tower to get to the top via a trap door. It's definitely something they should do, but I'm not sure how well it would work with closed cities.

Or...maybe the guards don't let random people onto the walls? When was the last time you saw a beggar on the walls? Or a shopkeeper?

There are places where towers are for looks, or have no obvious entry. I certainly don't mind an inaccessible location that just looks good from a distance.

In oblivion there is virutally no point in going up there anyway castle walls were barren and since its in a seperate world space that made even less sense to go on them.

aaaaand Seperate worldspace cities are back :teehee:

so

hopefully Taverns and mansions will be better :P

I really liked how in Daggerfall you could climb your way up to the towers and the ramparts of castles and enter these buildings from up there, even if the doors did simply teleport you to the same entrance that all of the others did. The palaces in lesser kingdoms were nice, though - they had a spiral stairway leading up to the roof that took you to the upper floor of the interior.

That's true. But then there should be locked doors at least, the guards have to get there too.

One thing that drove me nuts in Oblivion was that bandit cave near Chorral with a crack in the wall that led to the sewers. I spent hours trying to find a way in there only to finnaly go to the wiki and read that it was a location for a nerfed quest. I had thought that every city might have an underground with a secret entrance and spent more hours looking for them and finding nothing. I just hope theres no half finnished Quest locations in Skyrim to tease me.
