Decorating your house --- impossible?

Yeah, umm... I get that you put forth some effort to place everything where you wanted, but the ability to manipulate objects doesn't really serve any purpose in the game. It's a minor perk, at best, and one we should feel fortunate to have. While the semi-realistic physics, which is the word I think you were looking for, are a notable feature of the game, saying that it's broken just because we can't place every item in the game exactly the way you want, or that they do or do not stay where you put them... well, that's hardly a game breaker. I find it pretty silly that anyone would even consider raising a complaint about it, in fact. There's a huge world full of stuff to do in Skyrim and here you are, nit-picking over not being able to set your silverware on the table. Wow. Talk about missing the point.

Sorry that a game of this magnitude can't satisfy your need to flex your interior decorator talents... maybe try The Sims 3? *shrug*

It's comments like this that irk me the most. It's in the game, it needs to work properly. I love this game, but so much of it feels half-finished. People are so willing to give bethesda a pass on pretty much everything.

Going to go ahead and ignore the idiots in this thread, after all once another game comes out they will all leave and only the true TES fans will remain.

I myself when I decorate the house, the items stay in place! :D....sometimes xD, maybe it is just a bug?

Not really. No. It's a RPG, not a design-your-own house video game.

Don't you think that as part of the role that a person is playing in this RPG, the hero might want to display their trophies and show off their hard work? Don't criticize the way people want to play the game. Houses are there for a reason, if they weren't then players would just be given a chest in the corner of the city to put all their stuff in.

Part of that is ROLE in the RPG letters. To get into his role. Won't someone please think of the people with design sense! Also I find it ironic that people are bashing on environment design when everything in the game has been laboriously hand crafted much like the people want to do. I'm sure the devs understand OP.

What's the harm of making new friends. Besides there's one thing that I worry about about giving endless praises to Bethesda: It prevents improvements, and that one day we wake up, and suddenly, it's a Fable 3, or even worse DA2.

Bethesda opted for more player, so ignoring their thoughts would be well... ignorant. More over a valid contribution such as this thread.
Though I disagree generalizing the whole mechanic being broken.

Obviously you never played Oblivion or you would've realized that many people enjoy decorating their homes and it was easier to do in Oblivion than it is in Skyrim right now.

Pretty much. Hes obviously never played any ES. It seems like only the newbs that are new to RPGs, much less ES games are the ones going "this isn't the sims. Its about headshooting dragons, etc."

I played Oblivion. It never occurred to me that decorating your home would be important. Oh wait... It's not important at all in the game. It doesn't matter, NPC won't interact with your home, you won't get trophies or achievements from doing so. Nothing. If like wasting your time and putting random pixelized object in a virtual home, your choice. But I'd rather do that in real life, you know? Less time consuming.

Edit: I stated many times that my favourite TES game is the fourth instalment, yet again, you wouldn't know. Sad, sad.

TBH most posters here are "newbs". This is a single player game, it is barely even a challenge ( both gameplay and lack of challenging puzzles/quest lines ) without enforcing drastic restrictions on myself. TES series has been watered down so much theres not much RPG left in it, more of an action adventure game.

That's for another thread, about another discussion entirely, although I wouldn't necessarily disagree with you.

Havent had that problem but it already pisses me off that I cant turn items move them away from me. Even when I occasionally get them the right way around they just bounce off as soon as they touch the surface. Oblivions item placing had its flaws but at least it was better than this. No idea what caused bethesda to do this.

I can't freaking mount anything on the board above my bed in the Whiterun home, I can mount on the ones in the hallway and above the front door.

It's really ticking me off

This was the 2nd time I placed the items.

I did the table finished, but not the shrine first time, and I accidentally pushed something off table, so I pressed F9 to reload since I had just saved it... and when it loaded up... BOOOM!! Whole damn room in shambles.

Then I replaced it, and did the shrine and some other stuff.

Left house, came back... you see the result right there.

Pointless.

Same stuff happened to me.... More than once; i actually tried it three times and every dang time something was scattered on the floor. Will not try again until its confirmed that it is fixed. What a waste of an hour or two...

i placed a diabella statue that somehow fell into my pockets in riften :whistling: in my whiterun house. for about 5 times upon entry to my house i found it on the floor i even tried placing it in different places, i think my housecarl likes the statue too much and she doesn't have time to put the statue back when she's done cause i startle her or something so she just drops it and runs up to my collection of sweetrolls in my bedroom. but i think she knows i knew and now its completely gone D: what did my housecarl do with my diabella statue!?! anyone have any ideas?

This happened to me, in an albeit slightly different manner and with a different item. So I finished the Daedric quest to get Dawnbreaker (Meridia) and I decided to use it a bit. I liked it due to the neat effect of sometimes causing draugr and other undead to explode upon death doing damage and fearing other undead enemies. I am, however, a smith so I have other weapons that I've made that I like better than the Dawnbreaker. Ok, no problem, I'll just find a place to put the Dawnbreaker until I find it useful again. So I need a place to put it hrm... my house in Whiterun has some space! I already had my other weapon racks/display plaques full with other nice items (Mace of Molag Bal, Voldenrung, etc.) so I think to myself, "Well I'd sure like to display this in the open, where to put it now?" and with that thought I had another great idea, "I KNOW! I'll prop it up nicely by the chairs near the Breezehome firepit to give it the look that it's an often used weapon!" to accurately reflect that fact.

So then I decide that I want to go adventuring for a while, and I want to test out the companion feature (which I have never tried due to my ranger/lone wolf RP style on this character) so I ask Lydia to join me. Here's where the fun starts. So I run out to the far West of the map and I stumble upon the Shrine of Boethiah. Great! Another chance for a Daedric Artifact for my collection! Since I like Lydia, and the quest asks you to do something less than scrupulous with a follower, I want to go send her back home. I tell her to leave my service, no problem right? Well this is what I think for the moment.

Next thing I do is sleep at an inn, forgetting about having completed the prerequisite for the Dark Brotherhood initiation. Needless to say I get a bit thrown off my path after being abducted by Astrid, the DB leader, but I head back to my original destination, Riverwood, so I can scrounge up a follower (namely Sven that unworthy PoS) to take to the Shrine of Boethiah, but he says the following, "It looks like you already have a follower."

Now at this point I'm scratching my head about the situation. I clearly do not have anyone following me, but the game still thinks I do. Well, time to head back to Whiterun to see if Lydia is back in my Breezehome. Now here is where it gets very interesting.

Lydia is gone. Completely and utterly gone. She isn't in my Breezehome, she isn't at Dragonsreach, in fact it seems she's not anywhere in Whiterun. I try to wait it out for 4 maximum waiting cycles (96 game hours) and still she hasn't come home. I am very disheartened at this point, seeing as how I had fully crafted a Dragonplate set with shield and a fantastic upgraded/enchanted ebony sword. The final part of the story comes here. I go downstairs to check out the rest of my house and what do I find missing?

My Dawnbreaker, my Daedric artifact that was sitting so nicely up against the chairs in the main room is gone. Not only is it gone, but out of the 20 or so other items I have placed on the floor, it is the ONLY thing gone. So at this point it seems to me that Lydia returned home and ran off with the Dawnbreaker to have her own adventures. Apparently being second horse to the Dovahkiin wasn't enough for her. No sir she needed her own incredible sword of undead slaying so she could clean out the rest of the undead crypts of Skyrim without me.

I did eventually find Lydia after conquering Whiterun for the Stormcloaks. The new Jarl offered me the title of Thane (already had it along with the house) to which I immediately accepted. Then, what do you know I walk down the steps of Dragonsreach to find NONE OTHER THAN THAT *$*&$# LYDIA, walking around as if she hadn't been gone FOR MONTHS with my Dragonplate armor set, enchanted ebony sword, and Dawnbreaker. The kicker, however, is that she has none of the gear I gave her, nor can I re-initiate her service as a follower as she believes ANOTHER Lydia that LOOKS JUST LIKE HER is already in my employ.

So, basically, on this playthrough, I cannot claim Boethiah's artifact, I no longer have Dawnbreaker, and I cannot have a follower (not such a biggie).

I AM SAD PANDA.

First thing I tried!

All she had on her was the default Iron/Steel stuff she gets at the beginning of the game. I also still could not get anyone else to follow me.

The condescending responses to OP are staggering.

Telling a player he's pointlessly wasting his time by wanting to do something he has fun with, using the same game the critics are playing, no less, is an irony beyond only the most hopelessly egocentric.

I feel for you, OP. Housing, collection and decorative placement are very fun and relaxing for me. It's a bit like tending a zen garden. And the experience is ruined with a simple mechanic that should work right, and has so in the past. If we can grab items and manipulate them in any way in Fallout, I doubt there's any reason why we can't do it here. Here's hoping they tweak it.

I agree with you OP.
did the same with war trophies, fun stuff etc got everything on the ground when i came back.
Tried to use mannequin to expose my work or goodiness i looted ... found mannequin on the roof first then purely invisible.
Tried to use racks to expose my blades ... blades were meters above said rack.

*miss Morrowind easy item placement*
