Dedicated Servers on Console. . .

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:05 am

I have long been on my soapbox about dedicated servers on consoles. MAG, BF and Warhawx have all successfully implemented them. Obviously I understand that it is not free. . .and its funny that the elephant in the room(CoD:Black Ops) cant manage to implement them. I understand that BRINK is starting from the ground up. . .maybe if I hit the lottery I'll mail Bethesda and Spalsh a few million to hook us up. . . :sadvaultboy:

Costs money. Lots of it. Peer-to-peer is a much less costly, yet unfortunately worse, alternative.

YEAH WHY CAN'T WE

Has it actually become more expensive to get dedicated server over the years? Even as the cost of technology has seen a steep decline? Because a lot of games had dedicated servers in the past, didn't they?

Solution

make them paid dedicated servers through XBL and PSN, the payment service is already set up and ready, really no reason why not

Itll add alot of staying power to the console versions so ppl dont quit after 6mo and move on forcing the game to make a whole new 59.99 title rather than a 29.99 expansion like they used too

They've already confirmed that they are sticking with P2P. Dedicated servers are expensive, and I honestly don't think they would make all that much difference in a game like Brink.

Well being able to join a server with ppl u like playing with rather than a random matching will benefit ANY game imo

If they can make PC games with dedicated servers, with a service that obviously doesn't cost monthly. Then why can't they for console games? I understand it's a tad different between PC and console, but the differences for servers can't be that broad of a gap to cross.

i really agree with this topic (thanks for that first off) i was tempted to get Brink on PC even if i can't play it just because i want to be able to decide where i'm going and what i'm doing, not to mention most PC games are much better then Console versions.

PC players rent their own servers, so there is a monthly cost, usually split by either regulars or clan members on a clan server, or like me, have a sponsor that covers our servers

Costs too much and we obviously aren't worth it.

I don't blame them really, with a new IP and all, dedicated servers could be a costly and worthless investment if that game goes belly-up (like MAG did, really).

We host our own dedicated servers or rent them. They don't come free for us, unlike games that have dedicated servers on the console. Now you also know why not many console games have dedicated servers. They cost alot of money for the publisher.

I'm not sure why console players can't host or rent their own dedicated servers though. Probally has something to do with Microsoft and Sony not wanting third party's on their networks.

Battlefield has always had dedicated servers for all platforms.

The lack thereof for Brink is literally my *only* concern about the game.

That is a great idea! And one that I had not thought of before. But I would be willing to pay for a dedicated server, if that would enable them to exist.

Yea MS is starting to siphon off an additional 10 bucks from us live users, you'd think with that combined sum they would throw us a bone.

1. Battlefield has it because they need it. They cannot have a game of that scale and and collect stat data and have it run smoothly on p2p.

2. p2p is the standard format on console, and many new releases and games coming out, use it. Dedicated servers are in its infancy on console, and players are discovering what PC gamers have been enjoying for years.

Also the matchmaking-system which evolved from consoles does only work on P2P properly.

With good netcode, P2P is fine more often than it's problematic.

If they have good netcode (unable to confirm until the game's out, but coming from a company with a solid background in multiplayer game development), and host migration (which has been confirmed in an interview), the game should be fine.

I don't think any IP will ever have dedicated servers. You need to make sure that people will actually play a game before you pay for dedicated servers. That's why the complaints are so strong in CoD players. People are clearly going to play CoD, so they probably should have had dedicated servers for every game after CoD 4.

Doesn't Homefront have dedicated servers?

They probably made a mistake in doing that. Sure, the game turned out relatively successful, but it was also panned by most critics and neglected many fundamental innovative aspects of the modern FPS. The dedicated servers were nice. Dedicated servers are always nice for a game, but they are also high risk.
