Dedicated Servers (Why not?)

Post » Tue Feb 03, 2009 4:34 pm

I admit I don't know much about the inner workings of the Xbox 360 network, or even the console itself, but why don't move console FPS game developers run dedicated servers for their games?

If it's a decision purely driven by cost, I'd be more than happy to drop an extra $5 a month for stable servers (until I deem myself done with the game). Or why not allow the option of user funded servers like most of the PC FPS games?

I suppose I just don't understand why this isn't done. I feel it would make the playing experience much more enjoyable. Perhaps I'm just stuck in my Counter-Strike days...

FPS games also need keyboard and mouse to be played properly - why you dont complain then ?
Ummm, no... Please go back to PC if you like that format so much. BTW, I'm sure SOMEONE sells a keyboard/mouse setup for Xbox. Why troll the dedicated server thread?!

I think more game producers should be funding dedicated servers. They make a nice profit on most of these FPS's. It would be nice to have player paid servers. I would gladly pay for that service, but I'm sure it would be a logistical nightmare trying get that through XBL. Hell game dev's can't even deploy a patch for their own game with XBL Q/A and approval..lol

Fail troll has failed.

I'm not really complaining. I was just curious why more developers don't invest into dedicated servers for 360s/PS3s.

To be completely honest with you, fail troll. Then ONLY reason I did not buy this game for the PC, was because I cannot afford a bad ass computer at the moment. So spending $300 on a system that has multiple good games supported on it, with out the issues of hardware compatibility and video/audio driver issues, seemed like a good investment.

I do agree, FPS games allow you to have much more control when played with a keyboard and a mouse, and I prefer it that way since I started on the PC. Console gaming is quite challenging though but gratifying to master.

It's not like i want to GET BACK to PC - i would rather eat donkey **** than play an FPS game on PAD and have any pleasure out of it.
I use Xbox only for Guitar Hero\Exclusives.
I just like how you - console players look like while gaming

This pic says it all
So why are you here?!

I believe it says "Crysis 2 Xbox 360 Discussion," I believe you may be lost sir. Please click the back button a couple times to find the PC Discussion room.

Or you just mad cuz we have the same game as PC, and Crytek left you out of the equation during the development stage ;)

Don't hate, appreciate

Dedicated servers are not the answer. It is all about ping. If the dedicated servers are on the East Coast and someone from the West Coast is trying to play their experience will be crap because they will have a high ping......[cough}Homefront[cough].

The only way dedicated servers will work is if the servers are spread out throughout the country and the game allows a person to select which server they play on, similar to PC games. They'll never do that. Of course you know that with the servers spread out you are thinning the amount of available "good" games for people making is harder for people to find full games. The only way that works is if the game has a huge following like a COD or Bad Company 2.

It is all in the distance you are to the host. Whether that host is another xbox or a dedicated server.

People are so quick to say "dedicated servers", and boom......all problems disappear. It just amazes me.

Developers need to make the games have the option to run a dedicated server from your own console, like the old Unreal games.

I can understand that they wouldn't want any hacking, but it wouldn't be hard to encrypt the files, and if hacking still occurs, just patch the game to only allow it to connect to a server with matching config files.

Alot of places have fast enough internet to host a dedicated server for 12 people. Even in my tiny ass town of 3000 people I can get 60/5 internet which would be enough bandwidth for probably 3-4 different servers to be run.

OP, this question can be posed to almost any console FPS, with no reasonable answer in sight. I can't think of a single big-budget console FPS that dropped in the last two years with a good dedicated server system and/or server browser - other than L4D2. There is no excuse, especially considering the financial backing of EA. The least Crytek could've done was implement a dedicated server mode, in which you host a game from your 360 but don't play yourself. It worked for Frontlines...

Also, to PC elitists: svck me.
My rig is more than capable of running Crysis 2, but I purchased it on Xbox so I could play with my friends and take advantage of my home theater. Even on PC I prefer gamepads to a keyboard - and neither one is better than the other. GTFO the 360 forum.

Most game developers that offer dedicated servers have them spread throughout the world and have fiber connections sitting in data centers with much better internet than a typical residential connection. So ping really isnt much of an issue with them. You connect a whole lot better to fiber networks like that than most residential internet. For instance a friend of mine has fast comcast cable and lives about 40 miles away. I can ping a game server that is about 800 miles away in Dallas and have almost the same ping as I do to my friend down the road.
