Deep Sea (TC) working title

Post » Wed Mar 16, 2011 3:46 am

@The Greatness: No, ship's not working yet. I'm fast, but not that fast, lol!! ;)

@Mordigant: I'd really love to make this a full feature spaceshooter, but don't forget this is MW. You got certain limitations. Even if I cobble together a cockpit and equip it to the player, it still will look crappy, so I guess I won't get to deep into that. At the moment my priority is producing models and models. Gameplay will be taken care of earliest in about 2-3 month I suppose.

I have long thought how the characters of the TC might look like. On the one hand I wanted them to have realistic textures on the other hand I like creating weird freaky characters too much. I won't have any bunnies in this TC, but I think I will stay true to myself and make it freaky again. Maybe the humanoid race can be a bit more decent to balance it out.

What u think?!

Here's the first concept character. His name is "Mad Matt" and he will play the part of the likeable badass in the TC. You must not trust him further than you can spit, but in an odd way, he's a sympathic guy. Matt runs a small undersea bar'nclub called "TheDirtyDepth", of which most people suspect it is just camouflage for a dozen of illegal businesses of the fat Amphibian. More about his person lateron...

Here some screen...

I've commented at GHF but I'll also say it here. This is looking very cool TDW, I think you'll excel in this project. Obviously your talents are easily capable of creating what you've set out to do, I just hope the Morrowind engine is as capable.

Good luck! :goodjob:

@Melchior: Thx, I hope so too. Will try to squeeze the best out of that old game!!! ;)

Here's first screen of "The Dirty Depth", the bar n' club I mentioned before. I will be sci fi in 70s style design.

PS: My CS won't toggle markers, either when pressing "M", nor when using the drop down menue. Anyone ever heared of that? All other commands do work though.

Submarine looks amazing, so does the underwater base. Great work, I just don't get it, how can you make it. :D

I like the idea of mixing 70s and sci fi. You have to work a bit on those interior meshes tho they are not close to the quality of your other work yet. I know you can do better but I also know that as an artist sometimes you work and work and you kind of loose track of consistent quality. Or sometimes it's because you haven't had enough practice modelling that specific thing earlier. Just reminding you to take one step back and look at this and see how you can make it more interesting. Also small warning. Any "big" single mesh in MW can only be lit by two external light sources at the same time (except for sun and some other atmospheric stuff I don't know about).. It's a limitation in the engine. One of the reasons why there are so many split meshes in MW. I see you placed down quite a few lights, just a small warning so you know.

Best of luck matey!

@Chriss R.: What do you mean by " how can you make it"??? I made that stuff already, those screens are from inside CS.

@Mirenye: I think the model is ok, it has simple shapes like the exteriors too and with all the clutter added, i will look just fine. Maybe you could be more exact with what you think is missing or improveable. Modelingwise it ain't a big problem as it is all just geometrical shapes. :)

I meant: You can model, I can't model. I am amazed and just keep wondering in my head, how the heck is that possible, since I can't even make a chair or something.

snip

Doors without frames, walkways without handlebars. Underwater without pipes. The outside makes just more sense then this in that way. Maybe a frame for the path to the right? Supporting structures like pillars even? Also under water structures tend to rely on spherical harmonics and other mathematical forumulae to build structures that are resilient to pressure. Ofc you don't need to conform to that but one HUGE thing in designing anything is to make it familliar enough that people can relate to it but special enough that it is your own thing. You are already doing this by tying it in with the 70ties. Maybe look at underwater tech from 70s and integrate that a bit into the overall structure? Dunno if that makes sense or will make sense. At this stage i'm just brainstorming about more specifically what I meant. I just feel that in a "lived in" interior there are many things structurally that feels like it's missing. It has potential, you just have to unlock it =)

You are partially right tho. Clutter will definietly help a fair bit =)

@Chainy: Those models are awesome plus they are shiny!!! :) Good job!!!

@Mireneye: Those things you mentioned will all be added to the location, some have been already made. On the screen you just see the base mesh. I wanted to show the concept, not the final thing. It will all be fine, trust me on that!!! ;)

About the lighting: What about amodel that is split into several single materials, still only two external lights?

The materials won't matter unfortunately. You have to split up the meshes. I'm not certain 2 is the limit for interior. I know it is for exterior. There might be different optimizations going on in the engine and I have only tried it in EXT yet. It might be a bit more friendly and allow several lights to illuminate one mesh at the same time.

@Mireneye: I will test the light thingy, but i suspect too thatt it is different in interiors. I always used to have a gazillion lights and never had any issues with that.

@MA: Nice Avatar, keep it until I made you a custom one. I will let some friends of mine have alter egos in this TC. The avatar you have now, is actually my friend Chainy. I'll be in the TC too, as a taxi driver, lol!!! :P

Speaking of taxis...well, I thought we would need some kinda traveling service in the TC too, so I took a siltstrider and put it on the sea ground. Poor beast died a horrible death. :) That's why I decided to have submarine taxis. Here's the first screen, model and textures still in progress. This taxi was a collab between Chainy and me!!! ;)

That is awesome. Just out of curiosity. Do you plan on implementing these as creatures, or NPCs, so that they can maybe move about path grids? So that the ships aren't just static eye-candy.

As for a title name I kind of like Deep sea. Some food for thought. The name for the underwater world/areas I was gonna make earlier went by the name "Leviathan realm" It's a pretty catchy name.

EDIT:
