Default Starting race

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:59 am

Hi. I have a custom race, and a series of quests based around a particular story line.

I have changed the startup of the game, using info from the end of the 'WorldBuilding 101' tutorial on the Wiki, and things are working okay. However there are issues!

1) The intro video of the Emperor is still there and playing (I made a separate post about this http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1077047) and Id very much like to get rid of it once and for all.

2) Once the intro video is done the player is presented with the race choice screen, and here is my main problem: I don't want a race choice at all, OR I want the default race choice to be my own race (which is of course selectable). There is a valid reason for this - my quests are all built around a particular race who DO NOT get on well with the other races in the game; starting as another race would complicate the players life somewhat!

So basically I need to make the default race my own, OR remove the option to change races. I don't mind being able to change the face etc, but the race should remain set as my own. (and of course if anyone knows how to get rid of that blasted intro video, Id love to know how to do it!)

[EDIT] Having looked at the way in which message boxes etc are created, is there a script somewhere that creates and shows the race menu? If so would it be possible to remove the "choose race" item in that window? If so, where is this script! Iv hunted for it but I cant find it at all!

cheers

If memory serves, going to Actors--NPCs--Player, and changing the Player's Race will change the default Race.

Edit: Not at my CS Computer, so cannot check, but go to Quests, CharGen/CharacterGen, and look in the Stages-- I think there will be a line in the Result Script for one of the Stages with a video file in (possibly .bik)-- if so, just edit out that line. I think it will be Stage 3/4, since 5 is RaceGen.

Thanks for that! Ill be trying the player race in a moment, but the starting video file is not stopped in that way because the main quest has been removed so that I can start the game my own way (This comes from following the end section of the 'WorldBuilding 101' tutorial on the Wiki)

Thanks for your answer - Ill chase up the starting race shortly!

Try the .ini file: SOblivionIntro=OblivionIntro.bik

No idea if it IS the one, but maybe :)

Ill give that a go thanks. The starting race worked nicely though thanks - I didn't know that I could actually edit the default starting player like that, so now I can start in some sensible clothing that suits the start of my mod.

Ill take a look at that ini file next.

[EDIT] No, the ini file does not contain anything quite like that, and the only thing that looked promising didn't seem to do anything when I removed it.
Ill say one thing, that video seems to be the hardest thing to remove!

cheers

As far as I know it is impossible to prevent the race choice dialog, it comes automatically when you start a new game.
The video file is Videos\OblivionIntro.bik. You can rename it to disable it.
To ensure player can only select your race, try making other races 'unplayable'.

The race selection window is fine, since it allows the face manipulator, but it was the actual selection of the race that was the problem. Making the other races playable worked exactly as I wanted it to, which means my mod can now start without worrying about the player changing the race to something that will cause lots of problems later. Many thanks for that.

The Emperor intro video is now gone (yay!), but it would be nice if I could disable it in the editor, rather than expecting a player using my mod, to rename their video file. Is it actually called from anywhere that is accessible within the editor?

cheers

I have the line CDM_ posted in my ini as well. Sure it's not there? You could change that line with OBSE I think, other than that there is no way. But who cares about that video anyway? I think no player who has played Oblivion long enough to try an alternate start/custom race mod like yours will look at that video for more than half a second (most likely less if he can push escape fast enough).

Now that's strange! I don't have any part of the line posted in my Oblivion_default.ini file! (and Iv certainly not removed it already!)

Anyway, I know what you mean; I click through that as fast as I can too, but it would just be nice to get rid of it once and for all. Maybe the answer is to create my own .bik file to replace the Emperor one.... hmm, time to go and hunt down something that will make a .bik file!

Thanks for all your help guys

Just as a note here - setting the other races to not playable works really well, but unless you want to edit all of the dialog conditions they wont say anything during the game!

Ah I forgot about that. Most quests have a condition: GetIsPlayableRace==1, I suppose to stop Dremoras etc. from talking. The ideal solution would be to change the 'playable' flag after player has chosen their race, but it seems there is no OBSE command for this unfortunately.

Yep, its a pain alright!

Its not too bad now that I have the default race as my own, but if the player chooses their favorite race they will be in real trouble from the moment they appear in game!

Anyway, thanks for your help - its certainly got me further than I was before! I now start with my own race and Iv created my own intro movie bik file, so things are progressing nicely!
