Defeating CL and getting the chip from Benny

Post » Fri Oct 22, 2010 11:29 pm

Ok so first off I'm new to the forum so I do apologize if this was posted sometime ago.. I've not read through every thread here...Also I'm not new to the gameplay world of fallout, I've gone through fallout 3.. 3 times 100% and was working on a 4th till new Vegas came out.

Anyways, this is my first play through and I've reached a point that my game guide can't help with or I'm not understanding..

I hate, hate, HATE ceasar's legion.. I didn't do anything to further they're plans.. And as I was doing the yes man rout had come across plenty of the legionaries.. Killed a few groups here and there. Finished the quest wildcard: side bets- make contact with all the other groups/gangs. Completed most of the tasks set out for me by the brotherhood of steel (what can I say, I've got love for them cause of FO3). I've got decent guns and amo, and I did not have a chance to kill Benny at the casino in the beginning due to my stats not being high enough to talk him into doing something he might regret..

PROBLEM NOW: Benny is held up as prisoner at the CL tent, and I want that damn chip to move forward with the game... However my previous endeavors with them has led me to be attacked ON SITE! Also after a few small battles I was forced to fight some legion general anywhere I went on the map theyd spot menand make me fight? He told
"Me prepare for battle".. Killed him (im villinized) Even in full legion gear covering my face, the dogs still sniff me out!!? I've got no problem killing everyone in the tent and fort but how the he'll do I go about doing this??? I remember when I killed everyone in the town where the raft is, at that point all the missions for the legion started popping up as FAILED! And I couldn't care less until now. want my damn chip off that rat Bennys corpse!! Is there anyway possible to kill my way to victory or have I screwed my own game by not siding with them?? I've tried everything I can think of, stealth boy my way into the tent to plant c4, I've been caught, didn't last 2 mins. Tried going in with a follower with decent weapons, killed before I could even reach the tent... What do I do with out having to restart which would be horrible with everything I've completed thus far!

Please anyone out there who maybe has fallen into this rout by trying to be the good guy has some pointers. DO I take a better companion with me?, arm him better? Somehow lure them from the tent and kill them? Doninneed certain guns that will get the job done I don't know of? Help me out if you can!

Thanks for reading, jd!!

Go into Caesars tent, make them notice you in a few seconds and then run out of the tent.

Go to the fort with companions, a missile launcher, plenty of ammo and stimpaks. Let your companions do most of the fighting, healing them every so often. Get into the tent, the legionnaires (am I the only one that thinks they sound like a Doo-Wop band?) will stream into the outer tent and attack your companions. Skirt round the attackers and get to the back of the main tent. Fire a couple of missiles into the outer tent, this take care of all but one or two of them.

Well, it worked for me anyway.

Going to try Gabriel's method next time.

I exterminated everyone in the fort by a combination of sneaking, sniping and reverse-pickpocketing. I did have 100 in Sneak. The worst moment for me was the actual entry into the fort, where you have to deal with the gate guards. Companions will help here - I had Rex and Arcade, and between us we dealt with that area. I then sniped down everyone else in the outer fort (Gauss Rifle).

Leave your companions in the outer fort - I think they will be overwhelmed if you take them into the inner fort. With 100 sneak (or Stealth Boy), the inner-fort gate guard will not notice you enter and you can reverse-pickpocket a grenade on him for a quick kill. Keep by the gate and you can just exit if any of the legionaries gets too inquisitive. Then just snipe them down one by one.

For Caesar's tent, I used the same technique, only I entered using a Stealth Boy. Again, a reverse-pickpocket will kill the guy near the door. I found that once the guards were alerted, most of them followed me out of the tent but were still not aware of my location. They congregated around the entrance to the tent, where they were easy to pick off. Caesar might stay in the tent or not, but again once his guards are gone he can be sniped down fairly easily.

Thanks guys! You say you had two companions? How is that possible again... I can take one with me so far I've run into Veronica (who I've been using mostly) boon, and Raul.

I would LOVE a gauss rifle!! Where did you come by this? That was one of my fav guns!!

Also other then just walking around random caravaners and odd bathrooms.. Where can I do a good bit of stockmup on stimpacks

Man if I only had my weapons from FO3, these mother [censored]ers would be dead by now!

I'll have to check my guide again to locate Rex and arcade? Who's best you think to take with me? I'm only at level 18 so far so I know I got so much to do yet... But I wanna knock this battle out. My sneak is not high enough to be cool and bond like yet.. My only option is balls to the wall.. Just need a good hold out point, but there's like 60 of those bastards that rush me as soon as I get into the outer area of the fort... Tips? I've not tried running in and out of the tent yet.. I figured the long load time with doors(tent flap haha) wouldn't let them follow me... I think I'll try c4 outside the tent door and hopefully they all follow out?

I like taking Rex and Veronica, I run into the tent run out again, jump down the gap in front of the tent, whilst Rex and Veronica are getting beaten to death, I go to the far right of the gap, turn around and as the enemy approach fire and pray.

I think you'd best use Veronica in this battle, especially since it's pretty close-quarters. Also, like gabriel77dan said, go into Caesar's tent and leave right away, they'll come after you. Give Veronica some good armor and have enough stimpaks with you to manually heal her during battle, using the Companion Wheel.
Maybe you'd want to use another companion, you can have one non-humanoid companion in addition to your humanoid companion.
I'll put the names and locations under a spoiler tag, so only open it if you don't mind being spoiled about the non-humanoid companions.

Spoiler
Rex, a cyborg dog lives with The King in the King's School of Impersonation in Freeside.

ED-E, an Enclave Eyebot, lies broken down in the Mojave Express office in Primm.

Edit: You can find some stimpaks sold by Doc Mitchell in Goodsprings, and quite a lot sold by Julie Farkas in the Old Mormon Fort in Freeside, or by Doctor Usanagi at the New Vegas Medical Clinic.
Or you could try the doctor wandering around Novac (forgot her name).

Oh, and I think you can get a Gauss Rifle from the Brotherhood of Steel eventually.

Stealthboy and a silenced gun seems to work for me for the tent.
But yeah, they will follow you out of the tent so if you don't have silenced weapons that works pretty well too.

It's so satisfying when Boone's with you and after he shoots Caesar he has a good comment and then more good comments after using the Companion Wheel. :)

The Platinum Chip automatically goes into your inventory when Caesar is killed. Then you go back in the tent and deal with/or don't deal with Benny.

I'd suggest lots of mines at the tent entrance. Have your companion wait just out of danger and then step into the tent and quickly spin and get back out. Hopefully you and your companions can handle the Guards that are left...and Caesar. :)

Good luck!

Well, I got mine by killing one of the BOS that patrol Hidden Valley; that was before I learned that you can also get them by doing the BOS quests and getting the Elder to open up full trading.

If you want Benny to live, just give him a stealth boy and bobby pin, he gets out on his own. You get the chip back when you leave the fort, just don't kill Caesar until you get the chip back.

Easy. Kill one of them before entering the fort and wear legion armor.
