In defense of Oblivion

Yes,I often think im playing fable 2!
No,those stats believe it or not have an effect on gameplay.
Try killing a high level lich with a blade skill of 15,lets see who dies first.

Despite your obvious sarcasm, I actually do in fact feel like I'm playing Fable when I play Oblivion. And that's just sad.

Never said Oblivion is a bad game. It's just a bad game compared to Morrowind.

If any other developer, like maybe Bioware had made it, it wouldn't be that bad. But Bethesda is capable of so much better.

This is what I had in mind. Bioware is going forward with ther titles, Mass Effect and Dragon Age mostly.

Bethesda MUST Make TES:5 blow away any Bioware game that comes when TES:5 is out.

I strongly disagree. People always say "it's a bad game compared to Morrowind" as if it were a fact. Unsurprisingly, I don't like or agree with that. It's just as valid as saying:

It's not that I don't like Morrowind, but it's a bad game compared to Oblivion.

It doesn't matter how it was made. People would complain, and BioWare is especially incapable of making an Elder Scrolls game.

In defense of Oblivion, I will only list facts in this post. According to a video game world record book, Oblivion is:

the best-selling Western RPG of all time and the second most critically acclaimed Western RPG of all time(second to Baldur's Gate II)

According to that same book, Daggerfall has the largest gameworld in a Western RPG. Actually, perhaps the claim that Oblivion is better may be more valid(don't worry, I'm kidding), but as far as Bethesda is concerned, Oblivion is their best work and it's what put them at the top. Perhaps success is what makes people say "it's for casual fans", but success is success.

I agree with hamsmagoo. Oblivion is a very good game, but, in my opinion (because I know people would insist I'm stating that my post is fact if I didn't include those three words), it just doesn't live up to Morrowind. I would have thought of it 10x better if it was exactly the same as it is, only either made by another company, called a TES Adventures game, or not called a TES game at all.

Critically acclaimed?

I've never trusted critics since the day GTA4 got the same rating as Ocarina of Time. Timeless classic - Mediocre ADD game. Critics have no idea what theyr're talking about, and "critically acclaimed" is in the eyes of the critics. Opinion there, my good sir!

Technically, critically acclaimed isn't so much in the eyes of the critics as the wallets of the advertisers...

These two facts are of purely superficial nature. If someone told me, Crysis sold better than Morrowind and got better reviews, that wouldn't change my preference for Morrowind at all.

The only thing that I see here is that a lot, I guess even most, people who played Morrowind first prefer Morrowind. That does not make Oblivion a bad game, but it does make Oblivion a little to huge disappointment in the eyes of many old fans. So Bethesda must have done something wrong in targeting its own fanbase...

You know, in 90% there is no fact, if someone say something. People need to take it as it is: an opinion. You are free to say that Oblivion is better than Morrowind and other people are free to say the opposite. If there are more “other people” then you, it doesn’t make their opinion fact but you just have to accept it is the opinion of the majority (in this forum). Democracy...anyone?
Again you are free to disagree with them as they are free to disagree with you.

I have no problem with people disagreeing with me, but my point with that is merely that Bethesda, as a business, won't have any trouble competing with BioWare. As for opinions, one thing that does annoy me is that people feel the need to make their dislike for Oblivion well-known in a thread that has nothing to do with it. I'll see a "I play both(but vastly prefer Morrowind)" or a "I hate Oblivion" statement commonly in threads that have nothing to do with it. Some people seem to feel the need to make it well-known that they don't like Oblivion just because they can. There are "Morrowind is better than Oblivion" threads disguised as other things and posts that just pick on Oblivion for no reason other than to spread the message of Morrowind is better than Oblivion. Opinions are fine, but why does anyone need to post it in a mile-high sign everywhere they go? What about accusations that insult the fanbase such as "casual" or "action players"?

Morrowind and Oblivion are one of the best games in world so why we constantly fight that which one is better? There is differences but they aren't meant to be same game.

Each Elder Scrolls game is significantly different, Jin. Todd has said before that they build each of their games from the ground up; not of the back of Morrowind. They went with a different style with Oblivion and I hope they do it again with The Elder Scrolls V. You were saying that you were looking for polished Morrowind. Well believe it or not, people used to argue about whether Daggerfall was better than Morrowind. Morrowind was not build off of Daggerfall's game style. BGS chose only to use its lore and build a different game with the same 2 key points: RPG-Open World. The same thing happened with Arena and Daggerfall. Although there were not that many people in favor of Arena.

To be fair, I lurk in the Oblivion forum and see a lot of Morrowind bashing and people doing the same type of thing you just described. Different strokes for different folks. Some forums have a majority who prefer one thing over another, and complaining that people like to voice their opinion is pointless and somewhat rude. I love that people are allowed to voice their opinion. Do I agree with a lot of the negative things that's said about Morrowind in the Oblivion forum? No. Do I think that they should stop voicing their opinion about Morrowind? Absolutely not.

EDIT: Typo

Which people are you talking about(I don't spend much time in the Oblivion section)? I don't remember many people like that, and they typically aren't agreed with(especially by me), but there are very few over there who voice dislike of Morrowind. The general section, on the other hand, has plenty of Oblivion dislike, and from what I see, it is mostly those who like Oblivion that defend while mostly those who like Morrowind that attack. I've never seen a "I hate Morrowind" thread disguised or subtle implications of Morrowind not being as good in people's posts. Voicing an opinion is not the same thing as constantly mauling a game and/or its fanbase.

Just go read through some threads in OB General. They do as much bashing on Morrowind as the MW General people do on Oblivion. I've seen several posts in OB general where they say that all Morrowind fans are elitists, ass-holes, and that Morrowind isn't good at all because it has no quest marker, or it doesn't have voiced dialogue, or that it is just plain boring, that there's no originality, and the list goes on. To say that one group bashes or defends more than the other is ridiculous.

I see that the censor got your post.

Show me one of these posts. If they're so easy to find, please go find one. None of that stuff is common in the Oblivion section, and absolutely none of it is common in this section, only the other way around is.

Im sorry, I simply stated that I have never seen Oblivion fans start the argument.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the greatest game in the history of the universe..

but I really wrote: Oblivion s u c k s (without spaces)

I will, but you don't seem to believe me anyway so from your perception you'll probably see it as fine, just like a lot of Morrowind fans sees the stuff said about Oblivion as fine.

I will edit in a couple quotes later.

Right, because every Oblivion player is nice and never says anything bad, but all Morrowind players are Oblivion-haters who want nothing more than to just piss people off.

No, I never meant that, but the posts boasting Morrowind's superiority are far more common than any Oblivion-favoring posts of the same nature. The Oblivion section is not full of Morrowind-bashers. It has very few, and the general section also has very few. If your last statement was true, I would hate Oblivion too, but the majority of Morrowind/Oblivion negative relations posts that are there just to be there are those in favor of Morrowind.

Oblivion fans bash morrowind but except for the one seti showed and until you show us another thread where oblivion fans shout at morrowind it sounds like oblivion fans only bash morrowind in threads that insult ob or are mw vs ob threads.EDIT:omg I typed in oblivion s u c k s(without spaces) to see if it got censored like morrowind s u c k s does without spaces and it then said after I saved it The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the greatest game in the history of the universe and it is the same for morrowind but leaves out the 3 so I'll show you what it said:The Elder Scrolls Morrowind is the greatest game in the history of the universe.

I'm done arguing. The attacks from Oblivion fans exist(somewhere), but this thread isn't titled "In defense of Oblivion" instead of "In defense of Morrowind" based on the flip of a coin.

Do remember that I'm not saying that one group is nicer or meaner than the other. I am merely trying to prove that both groups have people that come off unfavorably to the opposite party. I'm sorry if I've upset or offended anyone, and I'm sorry if I've upset you seti, I just want to show that it's pretty much equel between groups.

Hm? No, you didn't upset me, and both groups do have such people. I agree on that, but on these forums, at least, I don't see the equality. As I said in another post, this thread isn't titled "In defense of Oblivion" instead of "In defense of Morrowind" based on the flip of a coin.
