So now we don't have a compass (not even for telling north, south, east, west) and we don't get directions anyways because that's too much voice acting work. How many times did you get directions in Oblivion or Fallout 3? Practically zero (if they did give you any directions, they were usually vague or general).

So no, when the entire game is built around a mechanic, one can not ignore it and still be able to play effectively.

I thought people didn't want the compass because of self discovery, so wouldn't vague directions promote more exploration. And there are some quests that are pretty specific, like when you join the brotherhood. "On the Green Road to the north of Bravil lies the Inn of Ill Omen. There you will find a man named Rufio. Kill him, and your initiation into the Dark Brotherhood will be complete." pretty specific there. Also who here is not gonna play through skyrim at least twice?

i hated the compass, i've been playing morrowind lately and i spent an hour looking for a cave in the wrong direction... THATS adventure, damn it!

i dont want some invisible man holding my hand the entire way through this game like with oblivion... if they wanna keep the compass, fine, but give us the option to turn it off!

that old line "dont want it, dont use it" doesnt work when something is right in front of you and impossible to ignore without putting several inches of grey duct tape on your HDTV!

if i want to wander around for hours looking for a single person who is playing hide and seek with me, i want to be able to!

i dont care if they make us search for a specific dragon, which the compass would practically be needed for, i still want to try my luck without it.

the life of an adventurer is supposed to be hard and filled with trials... not cakes and candy with a happy clown holding your hand and honking loudly when you're approaching a freaking objective!

Being lost for you may be the height of adventure but for many(those with jobs) It is not so.

From what I understand you will have no HUD so no compass.

Been answered many times

Playing hide and seek with Morrowind NPCs must have been very challenging.

I shall give you the direction to your Dragon "Look up."

The cake is a lie

I recently installed Morrowind again.

Congrats, classy choice :goodjob:

It took me two hours to realize what it was about the game that made me not want to play it any more. The lack of decent information

lol what kind of "decent" information? Morrowind has TONS of information on everything, if you have the patience to read.

and the incredibly slow movement of the character are a big part of it

You know, you can put some points in that "speed" category when you level up, if speed is a concern. I'm currently playing a level 5 character and my speed is already acceptable because I always put points in it.

I suppose if I was 12 and had nothing to do but search for some obscure location in a video game

You don't have to be 12 to prefer the games that use your brain more intensively, and even if you did, it's not a sin to be 12. If we follow this twisted logic we can reach a point where everything that we do "in a video game" is pointless, not only finding locations.

After playing Fallout: New Vegas, I was worried that Skyrim was going to continue with the unacceptable quest compass, but I just read that the HUD is not going to exist! Yipee! Words cannot describe my hatred for that green arrow. I hope never to see it again.

Please keep the quest arrow but make them optional. Some of us have other things we have to do besides play TES.

no there is toggle-able HUD and it has been kept in F3 NV (dont really think bethesda had an influence) and Oblivion so I think they are gonna continue it

I am guessing it will still be on the main map you use.Just a guess you will be able to call up the hud that may include a compass. My guess is when you take damage it will pop up to show you HP/Fat/Mana.Switching to a menu to find that info seems clunky(to me any way)

Directions over quest markers any day. oblivion usually handles like this: "Go to random dungeon and retrieve my magic crystal"; That's it, that's all the directions you're given :P

There weren't many landmarks in Cyrodiil to base your directions on, it was almost sheer plains. Skyrim's different in that respect, so we might see the return of following directions. But I don't think they will cut the Quest Marker completely, just remove it where it makes sense to do so. If the quest is "i last saw him heading west... " - no quest marker. On the other hand if it's "he's hiding out in that abondoned temple named X" and X is pretty well known and visible from miles away, there's no point in not sticking a marker.
Agree with no marker in dungeons whatsoever.

I honestly like the HUD because it shows my health, magicka and fatigue, which is useful during battles. And I like the compass as well, it's just the quest marker that I can't stand.

If "Temple X" is so visible and easily discovered then there is no reason to include the map marker to find it.

removing the quest markers should be a menu option, because I do not want to remove the whole HUD because of that, but I would if I was forced to.

I do have a job and I like the Morrowindish kind of challenge, I don't find it overwhelming and I don't mind spending time looking for caves on my own. If I don't find the cave tonight, I will search again tomorrow. There is no prize here for "world first" like in World of Warcraft and I don't see why everything must be easier and faster. I prefer slower and more difficult.

I think an organized version of morrowind's journal would be excellent, with a map that would only show stuff that you've been to. and the ability to get directions from certain NPCs that would relate to where you've already been. The directions would bring up a marker on the compass for you.

or maybe something like just a distance indicator for new locations so that you would never know exactly where new places were.

Of course! Why haven't I thought of that before :) that would work as well, wont tell you exactly where to go, just make sure that you aren't wasting your life searching somewhere where you'll never find what you're looking for.

I've got a map for a reason. Pull it open and up is north, down is south, left is west, right is east, easy peasy. No need for a compass. I'd rather have directions.

There not going to get rid of a compass, perhaps you have the option to have the HUD or you just click a button and bring it up momentarily, don't get to excited yet about the handholding being gone, we may find out next week with the HUD update.

No but there is a point where the cost has risen above the pay. I hated the Morrowindish kind of challenge, because it wasn't real challenge, it was only hard because you were gimped with vague directions and an inability to discus it with the quest giver. It was effectively fake challenge, where the difference between somewhere being hard to find or easy to find, is a matter of luck rather than skill.

This.
Seriously, though, you should only need directions to get to the place. I simply can't understand how someone can lack the mental capacity to find places without a quest arrow marker.

Yeah, it's almost like mental capacity isn't the problem.

So no vampireism for you then ;)

I'm surprised here no-one has mentioned the GPS like ability the map has to always know exactly where you are. That, IMO, is more immersion killing than having a map marker that someone can easily draw on.

I disagree. This is role playing where your character skills are the ones that matter, not the player skill. Unlike a realism based war game where everything depends on how good the actual player is. My character is an adventurer rather than a scholar or store clerk. I would expect him to be able to figure out where he is in the world and figure out where north is, and then give that information back to me.

Personally I don't mind quest markers as long as they fade away when you get close. No pinpoint NPC marker when you're close to them. Directions for quest locations are fine, but needs a fallback system for those times when they are lacking. So a "somewhere in that area" should highlight an area rather than pinpoint it. But areas you get from NPCs where they know the exact location should me marked accurately. In OB you just switch to another quest and ignore the marker, don't understand the fuzz.

Differentiate between the compass and the quest arrow! If I know which way is North--and that's not hard--I know which way I'm going. A compass arrow is just a visual aid. In fact, if there isn't one, I'll probably pitch the game in my "nice try, but unplayable" stack along with a bunch of others.

for some quest directions i wouldn't mind getting a quest map. this map shows pictures of landmarks and which direction(N,S,E,W) you need to go. like the treasure maps in red dead redemption.

I also think the quest markers should be toggleable, I like them and I don't see how no one else does, with the span of TES dungeons looking for a scroll for a quest would be impossible and extremely tedious.
After said opinion though I don't think it'd be hard to code a toggle option.
