Ok to delete prior saves?

Post » Thu Dec 05, 2013 12:43 pm

I am only a level 4 spellsword; but, I have 115 saves. Yes, I know, it is obsessive. I do this so that if the game crashes, I make a mistake, or something of that nature, I can revert back to a prior game. I also understand that excessive saves, for any game, can cause instability later on. Does anyone know if the saves are incremental or full? In other words, if I wanted, could I delete the following without any impact?

5 - 40

42 - 75

77-90

92 -114

Keeping: 41, 76, 92, 115, and any autosave

Is that ok? Also, is there any number limit on save? Given my pace, I am afraid my numbers may start hitting 10987

Thanks all.

Yeah, I'd say that'd be a pretty good system to keep, depending on the time between them. Personally, I'd make a separate save when starting and finishing a quest and maybe in between stages if the quest is long enough. Better to keep track of things that way, but that's just me. That I can just get rid of an entire quest's (or segment's) worth of saves and know where I stand at the moment. Maybe keep a save right at the beginning, just in case.

Anyways, no, there isn't a limit to how many saves you can have. IIRC, the numbers eventually roll back to 0 once you reach a certain number.

The saves as far as I know do not need the prior saves to function.

I suggest to create a backup folder for your character and store the saves there. Just keep a few game saves in the main save folder, Since I believe if you start to have quite a few the menu might start to slow down since it has to load the save information. If you need one of the older ones than you can just bring it back.

It is best to create a new game save every time you save since overwriting games saves have been known to corrupt a game save. It is also best to disable the auto saves feature since they have a habit of running and crashing at loading screens.

You can never have too many save slots. Well, OK, there is a point where it gets obsessive. I make as many save slots as I think I need, then delete the excess ones later.

I keep Milestone saves (like before starting a faction or various stages of the MQ or a faction quest line) and saves from before cool events happened so I can do them again, but 95% of my slots are deleted as time goes on.

I usually clean up at around a 100 slots, just because the list gets cumbersome. I have had over a 1000 slots at one point.

I usually keep just about dozen saves, for pretty much any game. In Skyrim, I keep similar amount of them, every now and then deleting the older ones and making some new ones. I keep backup of the older saves just in case, replacing them with new ones when I purge the list again. Back in 2009, I did full playthrough of Morrowind, with all factions (so it must have taken hundreds hours), with just 6 saves, that were overwritten countless times. Of course, it's not at all bad to have many saves, or to save often. I'm the type who saves often, partly due to occasional crashing. Calculating the time played versus number of saves, it turns that I save about every 5 or 6 minutes.

As said above, saves are "full" and do not rely on previous ones at all.

I always keep 10 just in case of any bug issues and delete the rest.

Is that 114 separate save slots or total number of saves? I have around a dozen separate save files and my total saves numbers 6700 and counting. I've deleted some old saves to make room for new ones and it hasn't caused any issues on Xbox, I also load up characters that I haven't played in a long time (months to a year) then save them fresh without issues so you should be fine.

I have 2 Manual Saves, 1 Quick Save and 2 Autosaves.

I should probably have more, but my OCD kicks in and says "THIS IS TOO MESSY!"

You're only as good as your last save Sir.

Keep up the good work.

damn and here i thought 15-20 different save files were alot and some of you guys have over 100 @_@
Well i usually just have 15 3 per character i created. Some i already backed up on a usb flash drive but as long as you feel you won't be needing some of those early saves i don't see any reason against deleting them.
