Deleting ESP's?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:09 pm

So last night/this morning I was working on a custom hood. I was having problems all up until this morning when I finally got it to work. Problem is, I'm left with a few ESP's in my Data folder that I don't want. They don't show up in normal windows explorer, only when I'm selecting Data in the Oblivion launcher, so I have no idea how to get rid of them. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks for reading,
-Tanner

P.S. I'm running Windows 7, if that has anything to do with it.

Weird. Did you mark them as hidden files or something? Try using Wrye Bash to delete them (right-click, File->Delete in Mods tab).

Just check the internal Windows Explorer to view all files including hidden and system files.

You can use http://notepad-plus-plus.org/ to recognize any esm or esp files.

Ehhh, I installed Wyre Bash, and is says the application it runs from is a .pyw file? I have never seen one of those, and my computer does not know how to run it. Any ideas?

I already have it set to view hidden files. What exactly would I do with this Notepad++ though?

Please read the Wrye Bah readme - one of the pre-requisites is a Python installation, and the links are in the thread here on this forum. Those pyw files can be opened via Python only...

Sounds like you installed the game to the default Program FIles folder which is not a real good idea if wanting to add mods --- The program files folder since VISTA has been changed to a high security area and if UAC is enabled files that are written to it are not actually written there but are placed in a virtual copy of that folder (under each user account) so that the programs on your system are not altered by other users by mistake -- Which is why it is suggested to install the game somewhere other than that folder in order to avoid this problem ! --- do a search for *.esp and it should find them for you.

JDFan is correct. Below is my copypasta response to these issues, yes they are that common.

Windows is basically ghosting your files since you installed to Program Files. UAC doesn't like it when files are altered in anyway and sees this as a security threat. This is why you should always install Oblivion outside of Program Files to a directory such as :\Games\Oblivion.

Windows is storing the files in the VirtualStore, located at C:\Users\\AppData\VirtualStore.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out with this. This thread can be closed now.
