Deleting items with the zap command.

I wanted to get rid of the bits of junk, like skulls and things from my Megaton house, and also Wadsworth's corpse. You can do that with the zap console command but I have a couple of questions.

So what I did was open the console, click on an object, and a number (presumably it's id) appears at the top of the screen, and type in zap and it disappears. But sometimes it doesn't disappear. The console says Deleting Reference but the item stays put. So I'm paranoid that I've deleted something else by mistake, like a part of the house or something. Is that likely?

And also, if I reload a saved game are the changes undone or are the items gone for good? I've tried that and the items seem to have reappeared, again I'm just paranoid that I've altered something important.

Is there a safer way to delete things?

Thanks very much.

I always moved Wadsworth's hulk to the spare room on the second floor and in a couple of days it will be gone. As far as things reappearing, some have and some haven't. I have tried to get rid of the annoying tricycle in the living room and it keeps coming back. Sometimes "zap" doesn't always work. I have have the same result with "disable".

Disable won't work with most of the stuff in the Megaton home. They have an "Enable Parent" set and that will always take precedence.

Phil5000:

Just go into the editor and do what I suggested before, drop the stuff you don't want below the floor so you can't see it anymore. Though I'm not sure if that will work now that you're already in the cell. But that will stop things from appearing in any future games at least.

I had a look in the cell and it was a nightmare. All the items from all of the themes are there. I couldn't even find the items I wanted to move. Some appeared to be invisible for some reason. I've had some experience with editing cells but I decided not to touch anything in there.

Just start dropping things below the floor and eventually you'll clear things up enough to make sense of it. Also, if you press the 1 key you can make things invisible without actually making any change to the reference.

They could be behind some FX reference. Sometimes it happens those make objects be hidden from view.

It's not a problem if all you're doing is dropping things below the floor. It just looks intimidating. Just make sure not to delete anything.
