Demographics: What Was Your First TES Game?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 12:30 pm

Game comparison polls are never accurate, when you consider that not everybody has played each game, not to mention the "nostalgia bias" and the "it was my first TES game" bias. I was just curious as to where the majority of the current forum fanbase comes from, and what their current interests/mindset for the "ideal" TES V are.

Me, I started with Daggerfall, though I can't honestly say I knew of TES as a full-blown series at the time given my youth. From there, played Arena (lolz), Morrowind, and then Oblivion. I still consider Daggerfall the best in the series, though Morrowind to be equally formidable, albeit in a different way. :)

I tried Daggerfall for a bit when it came out, said "meh" and went back to Duke Nukem 3D. Morrowind was gamegasm from the first moment tho.

Started with Morrowind, briefly tried Daggerfall and went on to Oblivion. Oblivion remains the current favorite. :meh:

Played Daggerfall. Then Oblivion. Then ordered and installed Morrowind (but haven't got around to doing all of the modding I want yet). Only accomplished much in Oblivion. to date...

Oblivion was the first TEs game I played, played Arena afterwards, thought it a bit too dated for me. Played morrowind not long after Arena, it became my favourite. played Daggerfall when the freeware one came out, and though I can see its positives over the others in some aspects, I haven't played it much, so Morrowind remains my favourite.

I started out with Morrowind just to take a break from Guild Wars one day. Its was mind blowing!

Then I tried Oblivion that Winter. Its alright.

Then earlier this year, Daggerfall was interesting. I got really addicted to it when it was release as free and I took a second wind into that game.

Planning to try out Arena in the Winter.

Anyways, All three that I played are my favorite, in each of their own respect.

Tried Morrowind first. Couldn't get into it without playing Oblivion (my favorite) to give it some context.

I was hooked on Daggerfall's original dungeon demo, but it was a bit before I could get the game. It came with Arena but I played Daggerfall first.

After Daggerfall and a little Arena I went to Morrowind and them Oblivion. Morrowind's my favorite.

Daggerfall was the first TES game I played, then Battlespire, Morrowind and Arena.

My favourite is Daggerfall, with Morrowind just behind

Started with Morrowind, then played through most of Oblivion right after I purchased my 360, but lost interest after about my 30th Oblivion gate so I went back to Morrowind, then tried a bit of Daggerfall when the free version came out. I like all three, but Morrowind is definitely my favorite. It's a toss-up between Daggerfall and Oblivion for second place. I'd probably go with Daggerfall for second, but can't seem to get immersed in it for long enough to play it more than a couple of hours at a time -- mostly due to game mechanics (I'm also not used to playing on a keyboard). I go back and forth between the three games, but spend most of my time playing Morrowind.

Started with OB, never heard of MW. I heard of MW, tried it, loved it even more. Heard of DF, DLed it recently, and find it good, but tedious. I like MW out of them.

Started with Oblivion then bought Morrowind (2 copies). Someday I'll finish wandering the woods, finish up my remaining Oblivion quests and move on to MW (and probably never leave).

My order is: Morrowind->Oblivion->Daggerfall->Arena. Never touched Redguard or Battlespire and don't plan to.

I played Oblivion first, and found it somewhat disappointing - not that it isn't a good game, but I really didn't think it lived up to the hype. It put me off trying any of the others for several years. Finally I got Morrowind and found it somewhat hard to get into, but once it grabbed me, it REALLY grabbed me - I honestly consider it a much better game than Oblivion, despite the inferior graphics and technology. I recently downloaded the free version of Daggerfall, but can't get into it at all so far (though there are a few things I like about it, such as the character creation system).

I started with Arena. To be honest, I hardly remember it, or Daggerfall, since I played them so long ago. I downloaded the free version of Daggerfall, but couldn't get into it, mainly because of the controls. LucasArts is updating some of its classics to use modern graphics/controls, and bringing them out again. I'd love to see Bethesda do the same with Arena and Daggerfall.

As for my favourite, both Morrowind and Oblivion. I played Morrowind for years, and now Oblivion is getting the same treatment.

Started with Morrowind, still prefer Morrowind. I don't think it's because I played it first though. I went to Oblivion, then to Arena, then to Daggerfall. I'd say it's Morrowind > Daggerfall > Oblivion > Arena for me. I prefer the more detailed environment as opposed to random everything. Have yet to play Redguard or Battlespire, though I want to try the latter. I don't count handheld games.

Oblivion has to be my favourite becasue its the only one I've played, and whilst that game was amazing and therefore convinces me the rest of the series must be along the same lines I cant bring myself to play dated looking games, not even my old favourites. I'm looking forward to the next in the series though, its bound to be a graphical masterpiece.

I had a problem with the third question. Having played Morrowind and then Oblivion, but NOT having played Daggerfall (yet) or the even older games, none of the entries really fit, yet you can't complete the poll without filling out all three answers.

I was impressed with Morrowind after an initial "learning curve" issue. When I got Oblivion, the graphics were plainly more detailed, and I was quickly "hooked" on the game for about a week or so, until the whole "scaling" issue, feeling of a forced pace to the MQ, devaluation of the character compared to the player, and general lack of anything "meaningful" to do outside of the MQ had me wondering "what's wrong". After completing the MQ more out of a sense of "I need to finish this stupid thing" than acutal enjoyment, I went back to playing MW. To me, Oblivion was an excellent "FPS/rpg-lite", but not a great RPG.

Eventually, I'll rig up an old PC from some remnants I've got lying around and try out the free Daggerfall download. There's a "Daggerfall starting dungeon" mod for Morrowind, which was entertaining, but the brief snippet of the obviously "procedurally generated" surrounding outside world made me question whether I'll really like Daggerfall any better than the later games. Only one way to find out, apparently.

Started with Morrowind GOTY, and then Oblivion. Morrowind is my favorite in the series, though Oblivion has its moments too. My situation is similar to Kovacius' in that I haven't tried the older games such as Daggerfall.

I've played all games except Redguard. And I've played all in chronological order.
The thing I miss the most from Arena are all the riddles you had to solve. -- Those brain teasers could have me tearing my hair until I learnedc all the answers... or found an alternative route around the locked door.
The thing I miss from Daggerfall is the vast map. Imo, I think todays TES games would benefit from bringing back some of Daggerfalls radomly generated wilderness, dungeons and quests.
Of all the games, Morrowind had the best story line, imo.
