Descent on Steam!

Post » Sun Apr 05, 2009 9:34 pm

I use almost like another OS, It's very convienent for buying games, and never needing actual disk data to put the games on your computer, or ever having to remember the activation codes again. So I enjoy to buy games that are linked to my Steam account, I feel it's a pretty secure buy. Even though I own the entire series on disk, I would buy Descent 1/2 via steam again, just to have them on my account, If it was available. Freespace too?

I noticed when gamesas joined Steam, and figured they wanted to put the new games up, but ID software has had much success putting up the good ol' DOS classics. Being of the same Era, the classics would be great to have from gamesas as well. :) I know you have Earthworm Jim, MDK, and the Fallout Series - but you had other games too...

Rockstar is going crazy right now putting new games up on steam, and during each release, selling each one for 75% for 3-4 hours. So you end up paying like 2.50-3$ per game! Pilot Names: Space-Invader Klein | Memory Thief

GOG has D1/2/3 for sale for like 5$ each. I use steam only for steam based games and always prefer to have the CD/DVD to install. Beta tester for:Descent 3 1.5 Patch, C&C Generals, Independance War 2,Starfleet Command 2,Settlers IV,Tzar,Allegiance,Starfleet Command (Alpha & Beta),MAX 2,Defiance

I like Steam too but you would be better off getting your older games from Good Old Games, they have sales often, include a ton of stuff with the game, and are guaranteed to work with Windows XP, Vista, 7, etc. Oh, and they're DRM free!

That being said, I haven't heard anything about a Steam release. If you really want to play the game ASAP I would recommend going with Good Old Games.

I already have the game :P I was just wondering about why it isn't on Steam... gamesas has many other classics on steam already. Why not descent? It would also get on Xfire that way too :D

I've always wondered how GoG gets all their old games? Do they just copy them or somehow have unlimited licences? Do they buy all the surplus they can find? and destroy it and turn it into Downloadable Media? (I just say destroy because thats what I cought GameStop doing with their old cartridge games, they seriously would rather destroy them then try to give them away for free... Stupid.)
Seems like a really serious oldschool site... nice selection of classics indeed... Pilot Names: Space-Invader Klein | Memory Thief

They would need to get the game rights from the publisher and maybe developer too depending on the relationship. With Good Old Games they basically update it the game to work on modern systems, I don't think they do anything to the source code so maybe it's just a form of emulation? With digital your stock is basically unlimited unless you run out of activation keys if you need them like Steam did with Prey a few months ago.

I don't think (at least I hope not) they destroy old physical stock to make their games more appeal, the problem with games like Descent are you most likely can't find them new at any retail store, you might find it used but a game you find used for sale at your city might not be available used at my city. With Good Old Games, Steam, etc there is a unified platform to buy these old games at while still giving the originally creators some money for their titles.

In terms of getting it onto the platform I guess it just comes down to licensing and demand, maybe there is an exclusivity deal in place for some titles? I would assume the people behind Good Old Games are good (no pun intended) at selling titles, the added bonus of having games run on newer systems would be appealing too for companies.

Well It is pretty snazzy that they update the old game to be able to run and install on the newer operating systems. I just assume GoG has piles of manuals for the same game somewhere. Pilot Names: Space-Invader Klein | Memory Thief

I would install Steam (seriously, I don't play PC games anymore, so it's not installed) just to play Descent thru it over the internet, assuming it could scale to 720p correctly.

Protonus,

you can purchase the D1+D2 from GoG.com and then plug D2X-XL or DXX-Rebirth on top of it - both support higher resolutions (and D2X-XL even explicitly offers 720p and 1080p resolutions when the hardware supports them). Image
