Destruction damage... weird synergy with Illusion perks

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:49 am

So it seems perks in the Illusion school , namely Aspects of Terror, buffs fire damage for Destruction see this gfaqs thread, theres a link in there to the UESP wiki too :

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/615803-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/61133373

Seems it only affects fire damage. I was thinking hypnotic gaze or rage might buff ice or shock but this is NOT the case it appears.

Sorry if this is old news but I only just found this out (all cred to other people of course) dont believe its working as intended... I mean Illusion perks buffing Destruction? Dont seem right to me...

I wonder if it has to do with Fire causing a Fear effect with the right perk...

Interesting find. While slightly odd placement I do like the thought of synergy between different tree perks..

Wow, very interesting... suppose I will have to check this out. Working as intended? Doubtful. Illusion the one school I skipped on my mage to save perks too!

Well rune and wall spells dont gain the 25/50% buff they are supose to from the destro perks, I wouldn't be surprised if there was another bug making illusion perks affect fire spells.
I don't think destruction was tested much at all given the state it is in with bugs and its generaly poor playability.

Yeah, its probably a straight forward value multiplier that is applied to spells flaged as "fear". Instead of applying to level as illusion spells do its applying it to damage, cause destro spells don't have a level variable.

What I've been trying to ask in the gfaqs thread but had no response is..... can any high level mages test this to see if this makes Destruction more useable in the lvl 40-50 and up range where I've heard it becomes really underpowered. Hope this gets patched up.... tho I agree synergy between the different schools is interesting... just needs to be explained from the start so us players can get our builds right. I'm only lvl 9 but was going to invest in Illusion at some point anyways but it still dont make sense.

I have high destruction but no Illusion, so I can't help you there. Gonna have to get someone in PC use the console to instantly get the right variables.

Yeah need a PC user to help research this. I'm on xbox atm but can easily run it on my pc ... just waiting for great mods to come out and dlc to come out and mods deal with the dlc

Not doing the same as Oblivion where I modded my game from the start then dlc messed with the mods then some of the bigger mods like OOO + Deadly Reflexes were a pain to update. My best experience of Oblivion was buying the GOTY edition a year after it came out and by that time most of the mods I wanted were stable and no further DLC releases to mess with them. Anyway I digress....

Using a staff in one hand and a spell in another makes destruction viable at lvl 50 (lvl 55 atm, with 78 destruction and rocking the world)

What abilities does the staff have? Are you perked in the Illusion school at all?

A destruction staff, it has nothing to do with the OP..

A destruction staff benefits from impact while allowing you to use only 1.0 magicka instead of 2.8 for the usual dual cast..
An spell in one hand and a staff in another = 2.0 dmg for 1.0 magicka + stagger = viable destruction after 50

I suppose I can try it.

Up both Destruction and Illusion to 100 with console.
Add some basic destruction spells the console.

Check the damage, then fully perk out both Destruction and Illusion trees and check again.

That'd work right?

You'd have to perk Illusion first, and see if it has any effect, and then possibly perk destruction to the fire-fear effect and see if that modifies it.

Make sure you check if "Animage" and "Kindred Mage" affect the damage as well, seeing as they usually stack on top of the Aspect of Terror perk. Thanks!

Tested it quickly.

Before any perks, Destruction and Illusion at 100:
Flames, 8 damage.

With aspect of terror:
Flames, 18 damage.

This is the one that works.

Make sure you check if "Animage" and "Kindred Mage" affect the damage as well, seeing as they usually stack on top of the Aspect of Terror perk. Thanks!

Will do now.

Edit: Animage and Kindred Mage have 0 effect on the damage.

Also uploading screenies.

Cool :) so it only works with "flames"? wouldnt all fire-based spells have a potential fear effect?

Shame about Animage and Kindred Mage. Thanks very much though. Just one final question - what's the maximum you can raise your Flames spell to then? I.e. what damage per second does it do when you pick both "Augmented Flames" perks as well as Aspect of Terror?

I'm looking to find console commands to add other spells. So far I've only found the add all spells command, that might crash my game. Hold on.

These are screenshots from a level 5 warrior character, absolutely nothing has been done to up magic skills:

Is that so? I mean, I see no reason why Lightning would not do that (I dont have the game, so I dont know if the skill / perk is designed so as to cause Fear on targets hit by Fire dmg).

The following spells seem to have 10 extra added damage (without destruction perks) with Aspect of Terror:

Flames. From 8 to 18.
Fire Bolt. From 25 to 35.
Fireball. From 40 to 50.
Incinerate. From 60 to 70.

I'll upload screenies later, if I must. Now I'm going to perk destruction to see the max damage I can get without enchants and that stuff.

There are three status perks for the elements. Fire can cause enemies to flee when they have low HP, Frost can paralyze (freeze solid) enemies with low HP, and Lightning just disintegrates enemies with low HP.
