Detachable Limbs Semi-Confimred

Post » Tue Dec 21, 2010 10:13 pm

In the recent article, "From Morrowind to Skyrim: how Bethesda built its latest gameworld" by OXM UK, the article was talking about radiant AI. As I was reading I came across this.
From Morrowind to Skyrim: how Bethesda built its latest gameworld" by OXM UK
Carelessly drop an axe in a forest during an afternoon's bear-slaying, for instance, and a merchant chum might retrieve it for you later. Behead him as punishment for running his filthy, lucre-loving fingers all over your prized weapon, and he won't be able to enlist you as a caravan escort - but his unsuspecting widow might. You get the idea.

So this isn't confirmed, but at looks at it, it may be possible as in new vegas.

Tell me what you think!

Sounds more like the author of the article just put a little too much artistic flair in it ;)

I'd love to be proven wrong though :P

That's just a way to say, "kill him", I don't see this a confirmation of any sort. I think you're trying too hard.

Hmm. Well, Bethesda did say that they were aiming for/expecting a Mature rating. Finishing moves might include decapitation/dismemberment; I can't think of a more signature end blow than slicing someone's head off. Keep in mind that these writers saw game-play; it is possible.

In Mythbusters speak, I stamp "Plausible" on this speculation.

I never had any doubt of severed limbs. I mean... Finishers. A few of them just have to involve some limb lopping.

I think, as others above have stated, that the author of the article was just taking a little creative license. It wasn't a direct quote and I think the author was just trying to express his awe at the AI system in place. Of course, this isn't saying that dismemberment won't be in. I just think that wasn't what the author was expressing.

"caravan escort"..... that sounds cool. Wagons full of gold and royalty? hoping for real economic trade between towns and provinces.

Well in the trailer you can see one of the undead (I forget their name) bet their head snapped back by a ax. If it was a decapitation or a wicked animation for his head being knocked around idk but I think that would be strong evidence pointing to decapitations.

I doubt it will be in considering Todd said they are not going for Fallout level gore, but regardless I hope those of us who don't want blood and gore can turn it off.

That would be the opportune way to show Skyrim is "grittier" or whatever the hell the buzz word is.

Todd never said that they are "aiming" for any rating. He just said they expect an M

Definitely not semi-confirmed. That wasn't a direct quote. It's called creative license.

Well, its possible.

A better piece of evidence came from Todd saying that the devs were looking at some of the Oblivion mods--in particular one mod (I forgot the name, something to do with better combat). Anyways, in that mod you can decapitate people.

. . . I know. :whistling: It amounts to the same thing. They built the game in anticipation of the M rating (meaning that it's highly unlikely they'll get a T) and as long as they don't get an advlt Only rating, they're fine.

I think gore will be in for finishing moves. The trailer already showed you stabbing a guy in the gut while he bends gasping over your blade -- whether or not it will be to the point of decapitation/dismemberment? I don't know. I think it fits in better with Fallout than the Elder Scrolls -- the Elder Scrolls don't feature explosions and energy beams -- but cleaving off limbs with a claymore might work for the gritty atmosphere that Skyrim is going for. This article was likely using some creative license, but that doesn't necessarily mean that those mechanics won't be in the game.

EDIT:

Well, its possible.

you are right, he said that they don't aim for any rating. He stated that they are just making the environment appropriate for the game and wouldn't be surprised that they didn't make the M rating

Considering fallout tech had removable limbs I don't see why they would dumb it down for Skyrim and remove a great feature that added value. I doubt there will be any sort of fancy system, but rather once you get skilled up there will be an increasing chance of head/limb removal on a blow which would kill the victim. I mean what wouldn't be more satisfying than a built in "deadly reflex" of sorts? Time will tell, but if they said it... I think they meant it literally because it is too descriptive.
