Detect life now drains magika constantly whilst in use?

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 8:54 am

So having been at Quakecom and seen the video live

I noticed that when detect life was cast it was constantly draining Todd's magic... personally I think this is a fantastic addition, because, correct me if I'm wrong, this is new? I remember casting it once and then having unlimited access to to for x amount of time in OB and MW

Which begs the question. What other spells now rely on 'constant casting' idea?

I love it. Hold down the spell button and the effect lasts/happens when you're holding it down. Like with the flamethrower spell. It makes spells look and feel... "real magical" :)

I personally think every single thing about the new magic system is absolutely brilliant. Bethesda, or anyone else, couldn't have done it any better. :tes:

Both press-and-hold-cast spells and charge-and-release-cast spells drain magicka continuously as far as I can see. Charge-and-release-cast spells stop draining magicka when cast, it didnt appear to have a limit to how long you can charge a spell for - could this be destruction skill based? Magicka doesnt replenish when being drained as far as I can tell. Magicka replenishes once you stop drawing on it.

I agree that this is fantastic.

For me, when I have a massive magicka pool I will be able to charge a spell and cast it and it will be uber powerful. I just need to increase or fortify in some way my magicka pool. Its very engaging.

Absolutely, I completely agree.

I think they all drain magicka while in use.

Only the spells that you cast and deliver, like Fireball, Frostbite and Chain Lightning, don't drain continual magicka; however, these can be "charged up" for greater effect (and greater magicka drain). Not sure whether you can charge up Frost Rune or Flame Rune.

Good, it was annoying to constantly re-cast it. Hopefully Khajiit's night eye is a toggle without mods now too.

I also love the new idea. Basically it's like the running fatigue drain from morrowind, but for magic. It's awesome :tes:

Although in saying that, the magic did drain very quickly considering there were boosted stats  :flamethrower:

I like what they've done with the triggers. Very engaging.

Also, now when I cast detect life, it actually provides strategic elements. So, I actually have to be aware when I cast the spell. The sound of a heartbeat is superb. You're actually detecting life.

Plus, no more of that annoying cloud blob effect when I talk to some one as I can simply stop holding the trigger and it goes away.

Hopefully even one better, whereby it simply fades into 'night eye' when moving from light to dark... kinda like those prescription glasses/sunglasses.

This is how most spells (except fire-and-forget stuff like fireballs) should work, in particular summons.

Not shields, hopefully. :P

Healing spells do, which is awesome. No more spamming healing spells!

Turn Undead (Circle of Protection) probably does.

What I want to know is about this: I never saw Todd use two different spells simultaneously. He used the projectile cast Frenzy spell after he stopped using the Detect Life spell. Could he not have cast a button press cast spell (Frenzy) while using an active spell (Detect Life)?

Are we only able to cast one spell type at a time even when duel wielding?

I guess it gives hope to the idea there's going to be a conjuration variation that allows you to toggle indefinitely whilst magic slowly runs out..

Agreed. Overall I think the whole combat system is really cool, much more fluid than before.

I've read magazines saying like "For instance, you can cast a fire and ice spell at the same time"

I hope invisibility constantly drains while in use. Some buff spells however are one shot casts and do not drain while in use like Bind Axe.

Why not?

Seems a bit awkward to me. You'd be limited to using just one hand to fight while you're using the other one to shield you. Being able to shield for 60 seconds or so and then use both hands in combat would be more useful.

On the other hand, if you can time the shield spell right so that it's only active when monsters are hitting you, that's more magicka efficient than a 60 second spell that cost a lot of magicka, where half the time you're not even being attacked....

BTW I'm very much looking forward to what cool spells modders will be able to create. :D

I really like the way Duke Patricks Combat Magic mod handles this - instead of encasing the PC in an invincible cocoon, a shield spell creates a visible force shield that you have to hold (draining magicka) and use directionally, in a strategic way. You can let go of the button, attack and raise the shield again.

If you use a shield spell in Skyrim in your right hand, however, you can still wield an attack spell in your left hand (or a weapon), even as you are holding down the right attack button for your shield spell.

I really doubt he had boosted magicka.

A physical magic shield would be pretty awesome.

Swedish Gamereactor magazine for instance. I got it in my room and I made a thread about it long ago.
I also remember reading it in other magazines as well.
