Deus Ex: Human Revolution Discussion

Post » Mon Dec 27, 2010 9:06 am

I'm playing through Deus Ex right now (first time :D), and the combat isn't that bad. The only weird thing is that the pistol is shockingly useful due to the stupidity of the AI.

The AI in the first game is indeed very bad. Some half year after the game release, Ion Storm said in an interview that they were working on a major AI patch for the game, but it was never finished and released :(

But despite the AI flaws it's one of the best games I ever played ^_^

I remember one time while playing Deus Ex I managed to get the MIB's and the MJ12 troopers to wage a civil war in their hong kong base. It was a Pyrrhic victory for the Troopers.

if your playing deus ex i highly suggest playing on hard or realistic mode (basically one or two shots kills you). it sort of makes up for the AI deficencies. warning though it will make some areas where there are lots of bots very difficult unless you have scrambler grenades or an rpg. it works for me cause i figure bots should be near godlike.

I'm playing on Hard, and I've been able to avoid fighting bots. Human enemies are so much more soft and fleshy that they're just easy to kill (whack to the head and they go down). I haven't died much yet, but I suspect this is due to the game being easy earlier on. I'm really digging to game so far, though.

But this isn't about Deus Ex. It's about D3us 3x. I really really hope they don't screw up the multiple paths thing- it's pretty much the only feature I'm looking forward to.

As much as I enjoyed Deus Ex my real concern is Thief 4, however in my opinion the more depressed my expectations are for either game the better off I'll be - if I get excited before release I'll almost certainly set unreasonable expectations which will guarantee my disappointment. In fact, I'm rather worried that Deus Ex 3 will be good because then I'll expect better from Thief 4 :)

That's my opinion on all game releases; if it svcks, I won't be surprised, but if it's great, I'll definitely end up buying it.

So you guys would definitely recommend playing the first Deus Ex? I love games like that and it's only £5.99 on Steam for the GOTY edition. To be honest I've only ever been put off by the fact that it's old, I find that the newer generation of games have permanently spoiled me with their nice graphics. I can't enjoy older games like I used to, even though they are great.

I did actually rent some for of Deus Ex for the original Xbox when I was about 10, memory is too foggy to get more specific on that though.

the health regen will still be included but it will be very very slow.

That's good.

I don't want to derail this thread but I'm not sure if I've ever played a game where I liked the health system. However whatever the method slowing it down improves it, whether you're talking about health regen or healing items.

Yep, I pretty much don't follow games in developement now until they're within a few weeks of release; even Bethesda games I try to follow sparingly. It's just too easy to get over excited and then feel deflated when its finally released.

there is also that utility that adds dx9 shaders to the game. its a bit wonky since you have to turn them off to see you menu if you using the bloolighting feature. but it does make the game look better.

My Impression of the video: Like the announcer said, it's "a first person shooter with RPG elements".

I didn't like the PCs crappy voice, the cinematic takedowns, the seemingly endless invisibility, and the weird third person cover mechanic. I did like that you can move bodies, and the FPS combat looked alright.

I didn't mind Jensen's voice. The cinematic takedowns are kind of expected when it comes to a FPS type game. You can't really say it's endless since he didn't use it all that much besides slipping around a couple of places. And the third person view, I think they said after E3 they were getting rid of it? Because so many people were against it?

You hardly saw anything from it? If you've read any of the previews on any sites for the game, you'd know all they showed was what the people who got the preview saw. I'd definitely hold back on saying I like or hate it right now since this is all we've seen, and it was hardly anything to begin with.

i didnt hear anything about the third person takedowns or cover systembeing taken out but if its true then im happy. if they are included that is a major detraction from the game. HUGE. i can put up with the guys voice which sounds like tons of other game voices to me. but trying to turn an rpg/shooter into gears of war is just stupid.

Huh, I'm actually a little pleasantly surprised by that gameplay. The conversations are still there, the stealth is there, you can still drag/carry bodies, vents are still there, etc. So far, so good.

I'd be happier if they redid Deus Ex instead. Just imagine it running through the Unreal Engine 3. :)

No, I think just the third person cover system is being taken out. Not the third person take down system, which I don't have a problem with, I like seeing Jensen from third person taking some guard(s) out. I'd be kinda awkward if it was first person instead.

between the two id definitely get rid of that stupid cover system. i can live with the takedowns as long as i can avoid using them.

trust me its much better gameplay if its first person. in the first deus ex i died a few times when i misjudged the distance between me and the guy i was going to stun prod. if they turned at the last second, or on a couple of occasions another guard you didnt see or forgot about came around the corner and shot me up while i was in the middle of stunning someone. this forced you to study your enemies closely and made the game much more tense and rewarding especially if you were trying a nonlethal game (which is much harder than the regular shoot em up).

as it is now it looks like it essentially just activates a cinematic that lasts a few seconds. if they made it so that it happend in real time and if some other guard sees you while its happening and kills you then ill have less of a problem with it. aesthetically its looks weird to me cause ive been in my share of fights and i never got to see myself kicking ass even when i was in bars with mirrors all over. its just unrealistic. however my bigger concern is gameplay. are they just cinematics that essentially leave you godlike and invulnerable the whoel time or can you be killed. i certainly hope that you can be killed. i like tense difficult games that force you to plan.

I hear what you're saying. But this is a game, not real life. I've been in plenty of fights myself, but I think it's better in action movies and games, when you see the kill move or whatever, rather than seeing it first person. I loved the first Deus Ex myself, but they're not speaking to a large group of people anymore, that are focused on what Deus Ex 1 was. They're talking to a whole new generation of players, and most of them have been corrupted by CoD and other games like it where it's just not real enough, etc. So we'll just have to do with what it is, or not play it at all?

i just hope it isnt cheesed up. also if you played alien vs predator, the new one. one of the few redeeming qualities of that game was indeed the first person "fatalities" which are far better albeit more gross than the ones i saw on deus ex demo video. you literally ripped peoples spines out in one of them and it looked and felt like you "the predator" were doing it as opposed to some character that you are controlling. also what happens when youve seen the same kill move for the upteenth time. i certainly hope they are toggleable. anything that rips me out of first person view ruins my immersion. i want to be adam or whatever his name is. just like i wanted to be jc denton. the fewer times im reminded that im not him but just controlling some character the better to me.

i woudlnt call most modern games realistic by any stretch of the imagination. regen health, instant time travel (certain racing games, prince of persia) third person views which let you cheat by seeing more than you normally would. its amazing when you get someone who is a hotshot to play one fo the older games like doom or duke nukem or even serious sam on hard modes. they practically get molested. i recently played the new updated version of serious sam HD and i used to be kick ass at that game. i had to work to get my skills back because of all the lame easy shooters ive played lately. even the stalker games on hardest settings are to difficult for most people who are used to todays easy shooters.

the only game that i found difficult to play today is probably left 4 dead on realistic mode. now that is a hard game and probably why i liked it so much. :)
