Developer Showdown

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:33 am

Well I've been proven wrong, Mojang won with a substantial lead.

I'm still surprised that this match received so many fewer votes than some of the earlier ones. I'm sure there are some people who don't like either company and purposefully abstained but I have a tough time believing this accounts for 10k+ people, maybe many of the Blizzard and Valve fans left after their favored developer was knocked out.

I owe my friends 600 bucks, damn.

For shame, Escapist users, for shame.

They probably would've won if Dragon Age 2 hadn't received so much bad press (from the fans themselves mostly).

I hope this doesn't mean next year all the people angry over this will try to take Mojang out early like we did with Zynga. Unlike with Zynga it wont be a practically unanimous decision but I worry that people will still try it.

Meh. Mojang won't win next year, this year people just wanted to see the underdog win.

Glad to see Mojang/Minecraft win.

Well done to a fresh developer and a quality product. Congrats and nice to see an underdog win for once.

Except they don't qualify as a developer until they actually publish the game. :D

I didn't see that coming. This whole showdown had me mystified.

That was the obvious victor, though I didn't expect Bioware to be challenging it.

Does making over a million dollars by selling it on their website not count as publishing it? Because Zynga shouldn't be on that list either then.

Congratulations to Mojang, they certainly deserve it. :)

I've seen a lot of arguments against Mojang these past few days. A lot of people believe that Mojang should not have beaten Nintendo as Nintendo has a long tracklist of AAA titles. But a developers' lifetime achievements aren't whats at stake in the poll. The poll is for whatever the developer has done since the last poll, not what it has done in its lifetime.

Mojang sent tidal waves through the industry last year and there is no denying that, this is why it won.

When Mojang went up against Bioware I read arguments that Mojang hasn't even finished a game yet and that Bioware has tons of "good" complete games. Bioware released Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 sionce the last poll. Mass Effect 2 was a good game and should have been taken into consideration for the poll but it was overshadowed by Dragon Age 2. I think most fans of Bioware had Dragon Age 2 in mind when it was voting. As for my other point about Minecraft being an unfinished title:

(At this time)

Mojang = Mostly known for its unfinished title Minecraft.

Bioware = Mostly known for its own unfinished title, Dragon Age 2.

Given the backlash over Dragon Age 2 and EA/Bioware's poor community interaction over the matter, it is no wonder that Mojang destroyed it in the poll.

It's in Beta however and isn't 'truly' released, but good for them and all that junk.

How do you release something that never ends? At what point is it "released" and everything there after is an odd on. Please define? Minecraft is a perpetually evolving game, how can it ever release until the day it's done being made? Yet so many people have experiences of this "unreleased" game.

Seems Mojang is winning, and although I love BGS, I think that Mojang had it coming. ;)
