Developer Showdown

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:31 am

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tournaments/standings/5 64 developers go head to head, and you vote for the winner. Go on over and support Bethesda - hopefully we can go even further than last time.

Anyone think Zynga will get as far as it did last time? I hope not - I don't even know why they're in it again, considering there was an outrage about it last year.

I remember having a fun discussion of it last year, so discuss - but keep it polite, please :P

Voted earlier today. My bracket has Bethesda winning, and while I know it's pretty far-fetched they'll beat out Valve and Bioware over there, with Skyrim coming out it might actually happen. I'm pretty shocked at how close the match is between Nintendo and Mojang so far, it'll be interesting to see who wins it.

Zynga getting as far as it did last year depends on whether or not the Escapist community can knock them out of the first round before the great beast awakens (Zynga nails another huge advertisemant to the top of their forums again). If they don't realize the contest is going on before this round ends, then we're good, but if they do then all hell might break lose again.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Obsidian this year as well.

My bracket also has Beth winning over Mojang, wich I know is definitely wishful thinking, but whatever. I think it's pretty likely we'll lose out to Bioware however - although, from what I've heard about DA2 and some failures with Bioware's PR lately, it's possible we can beat them.

I'd have to agree about Zynga - they can get pretty far if they notify their minions, but the Escapist community likely doesn't want that to happen and will rally against them first round - at least, I hope so.

I'm also rooting for Obsidian, but I don't think many people know they were the creators of New Vegas, which is a shame. They deserve more credit than is given to them, in my opinion.

I also have Bethesda securing the win. Given the current enthusiasm I think they have a good chance against Bioware although a win there will likely pit them against Blizzard in the semi-finals and MMOs can be real juggernauts in this contest (until Zynga took them out early last year Turbine had one every March Mayhem). I also think a match up between Valve and Bethesda is going to be difficult, here again it's easy to secure a large number of people through Steam but I'd rather bracket Bethesda to win then play it safe :)

My bracket has Mojang going a few rounds and eventually being taken out by Epic. I knew it was quite unlikely that they'd beat Nintendo but it felt good to root for the little guy :)

I voted for Mojang, but had them losing in my bracket. That's actually the case for a lot of matches, my bracket just reflects who I think will win, not who I want to win. Gotta increase the chances of winning that laptop from minuscule to slightly less minuscule after all...

There were so many times I selected a win in my bracket that required I apologize to the loser.

But at least this means there are a number of places where either my favored developers wins or my bracket is preserved :)

(Mojang took the lead last night, woot!)

*cough* sell out *cough*

Nintendo vs. Mojang looks like it will go right down to the wire. It's definitely a testament to Notch that he can go head to head with such a prominent company and come out looking like he'll win. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with the Escapist being a predominantly PC community at all... :P

Aslong as zynga dosent win, which sadly it will get far, especially when twitter votes count double, most with FB probablly have twitter.
Eh Bethesda didnt win for me, it was either Obsidian or Rockstar san diego. Probablly R*.

just checked, R8 > Obsidian, so its beth and R*, go R*!

I correctly guessed 23 results, which as far as I can tell from lurking on the forum is about average. Zynga losing actually didn't screw up my bracket too badly because I had them losing in the second round, assuming them winning in the first would rile up people enough to take them down. Nintendo and Turbine losing, on the other hand, has. Turbine won the first March Mayhem, and I've been blindly assuming they'll win at least the first round in each MM ever since. I guess they aren't as popular anymore, or maybe their fanbase wasn't aware of the contest this year, like what happened to Zynga.

What are these brackets you speak of and how do they work? All I did was vote.

If you go look through a thread you should see that many members have a blue box underneath their avatars that says a number, if you click that you'll be able to see what their bracket was. Before the actual competition started people were allowed to fill out mock brackets where they predicted the results of each match, the incentive being bragging rights and that each successful guess gives you another chance at winning a laptop.

Did Beth win?

Yes, they won their first round. Now they're up against Firaxis, who they're handily beating. I'm beginning to think they could actually take it this year.

Also, I got 26 right, which I think is a little bit above average. However, from the looks of things at the moment, my bracket might be about to take a bit of a beating.

Yes, they won their first round.

Thanks. Who did they face and what was the final vote? When I went to the website it said I had to login and I didn't feel like setting up an account.

Bethesda vs. CCP Games, with Bethesda winning 12 000 votes to 1000. Beth is steam rolling through at the moment, which is a good sign.

Get it, it's super awesome.

No surprise that Blizzard won of course.

Also, isn't Frictional Games on there?

Round two made me feel really dirty...

Bethesda and Firaxis are both responsible for some of my favourite games, and I've probably spent more time playing Civ 2 and Civ 4 than I've spent playing The Elder Scrolls to be honest.

Two biggest time sinks in my life, and I love them both for it. I voted for Bethesda in the end...

round four will be Blizzard vs. Squenix + Mojang vs. Rockstar and Bethesda vs. Bioware + Valve vs. Capcom.

round five will be Blizzard vs. Mojang and Bethesda vs. Valve. god only knows what'll come of that.

kind of bummed that DICE lost, though that's probably just because i've put more hours into Bad Company 2 and Mirror's Edge than i've put into all of Bioware's games since 1998 combined. i really don't think Bethesda will lose to Bioware, but they're on equal footing against Valve.
