A vault with a thousand or so inhabitants and a poisonous gas in the ventilation that could be set off at any point by a random trigger. It'd be like a giant Schroedinger's Cat experiment.

Someone who knows who Schroedinger's Cat?! :cookie:

Vault 37

10,000 people were placed inside with tons of food and water.

However they forgot to build a door so fallout got inside and killed everyone.

Vault 199 - 999 high devout religious people...and one athiest.

I wouldn't mind something like that, but the other way around.
Then the religious person would have no-one to preach to.

vault -1: An educational experiment. The vault has a total population 2000. All things are normal, except for the fact that 45 of the residents are math majors. The rest of the residents cannot answer the problem of 1+1. The 45 math majors must somehow ensure that the entire population is at the level of a college freshman before 200 years have passed. (necessitating the training of successors if they wish to succeed)

Given it's the Fallout Universe, I suspect they took the other, quicker-but-still-fullfills-all-the-criteria solution: Each of the 45 math majors picked the Nerd Rage perk and kills 43.4 (recuring) non-math majors...

Vault (# here)

A vault built as a weapons research vault (one of the first vaults up and running). A very large vault, it's population is made up of scientists, army reservists, military police, and a large number of enemy POWs.
Vault's second lowest level was for bio and chemical warfare research and home to most of the POWs. Lowest level of the vault was for human and animal FEV tesing. The vault was only given a small batch of Mariposa FEV (a small vat). The scientists were given all info on FEV and it's failures in hopes they would not repeat the same mistakes. Also housed on the lowest level was a queen http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Wanamingo, they wanted to test on her eggs. A number of exotic animals from around the world were in this vault. Strange as it maybe this is where stealth boy research was taking place.

Word of this vault was leaked out along with info on other top secret research facilities like West Tech. The vault was hit hard during the great war. All contact has been lost the area it's in, is now heavily irradiated. (Glow level of radiation not the vault door area of V87 level of radiation.)

Vault (# here)

A vault with a population of a 1000 people. 24 hours after the door closed, very powerful anti gravity generators kicked in. All temperature and lighting controls turned over to the vaults computers. The vault's gravity becomes 20% less then that of the moon's gravity. The temperature becomes very cold at night and very hot during the day. Oxygen levels are decreased. Nights in the Vault are longer then the days. Lighing and temperature are programmed to mimic season changes. All plants in the Vault were engineered to thrive in these conditions, they give off less oxygen then normal plants.

Vault was to stay closed for many generations.

Vault (# here)

A vault were everything is random. Water for a shower could be nice and warm then scalding hot or ice cold. Lights could be bright or dime to no light at all. Doors could lock or unlock by themselves. Food could be dispensed all at once and then nothing for two weeks or longer. All the clocks in the vault including the pipboys have different times and they can't be set. Alarms can go off at anytime they can be false alarms but just as often can be real ones. Many of the vault systems were designed to fail.

Vault 125, located just outside Nashville, TN. In it are 250 country music fans, 250 heavy metal fans, 250 classical fans and 250 rap fans. Additionally another 250 people will be musical talents from each genre. Vault duration is set to two hundred years, three GECKs have been provided. No entertainment holotapes as there's bands present, and there will be no shortage of firearms. Intended capacity: 1,250 people. Maximum capacity with hot bunking: 2,500 people. Experiment in question is how these varying musical tastes intermingle after the apocalypse, knowing that fans of these genres can be VERY strongly opinionated and quite sensitive when someone insults their genre.

About ten miles away lies Vault 126, home to exclusively gamers. This vault is a control vault, the experiment itself doesn't start until after the gamers exit the facility. This is designed to see how people not normally adjusted to being outside adjust to being outside in a post-apocalyptic hellhole.

Imagine the hell that would be the Wall Street vault filled with the descendents of fat cats, bean counters, and the SEC...

Or the one where the population think they are on a generational starship... after 200 years traveling sublight between planets, they 'land', open the vault door and meet their first 'alien' - you!

To the first line I picture Wall-E. There's no way those kind of people will ever let lower class people in the same vault so everything will be handled by Mr Handys. As they are not accustomed to actually working they will slowly develope into atropied, self-centered lumps of fat and soft muscle. Anyone who gets into the Vault will first be harrassed and humiliated by the Mr HandyRobot units then the decendents will have the Wanderer fired and hired back a one-tenth pay. Even though the Fi-dwellers can no longer used them, they all have keys to the restrooms and strictly forbid their use by anyone else.

If the Wanderer tells the Fi-dwellers anything about the outside world, armies of Mr HandyRobots will immediately go out to recruit what are precieved to be cheap illegal immigrants to work the farms and construction jobs, run factories and do gardening for little pay and no benefits to rebuild the wastes to the Fi-dwellers' past memories. The Enclave will be consitered the good guys!

As to the second statement, I thought that was Mothership Theta and the grey guys were mutated vault dwellers! Not sure how the Vault got in orbit....

Vault 1024: 1,000 normal people, all brainwashed into thinking they're in the Wild West. the vault would be appropriately dolled up, and the people would be given false memories of there being a preexisting order (Person A is the head of a crime gang that people S, F, D2, so on are in; Person X is the sheriff, so on so on so on)

(Insert Vault Number here)

"King of the hill"

250 phsycos, each start off in a cell by themselves, and they have a gun (Some may be lucky enough to get ammunition), all 250 of these rooms lead onto a larger room, in the centre of this room, is a Food Replicator (They're mentioned in a dialog line in fallout 3, so one assumes they exist), The hitch is that the Replicator only activates when there is only one person left alive in the vault, 250 crazy people with assault rifles fighting over food, it'd be a spectacle I suspect.

Vault 500: 1 man, 1 woman, 1 13 year old boy, and a pickle

Please explain.

Vault 907 - Twenty people who love the outside live in a cramped vault with no light sources or anything organic.
Vault 709 - The opposite, twenty agoraphobics live in a wide open vault with trees, grass, artificial sunlight, and wood walls (with steel behind them, obviously).

Some quick ideas off the top of my head:

1000 residents. All food is infused with high amounts of caffeine or other stimulants for the first few years. During this time audio and video equipment will play at decreased speed. Mechanics will also work slower than normal. Doors opening, food dispensers, etc. After this all food will be normal and machinery will be at an increased speed.

At random intervals, knockout gas is released in certain, also random, areas of the vault. During this time, all doors will unlock. Everyone else is still awake and has access to the helpless residents.

Everyone has the ability to kill any other vault dweller at any time. Perhaps poison via Pip-Boy.

1000 residents. 100 residents from poor backgrounds are given large apartments, multiple jumpsuits, extra rations, and other amenities. Other residents are from wealthy families and live in cramped, shared rooms with only the necessities.

Televisions throughout the vault constantly play images of extreme violence with the volume turn up.

All residents have crippling genetic conditions.

500 normal residents. "Leaked" personnel records record show that 50 people in the vault are convicted murderers and/or clinically insane.

All residents only speak English and are middle management workers. No knowledge of how to run a vault or it's mechanics which are designed to break down soon after entering. This includes necessities such as air filters, and food dispensers. All text within the vault, including manuals of the machines, are in a foreign language. Perhaps Chinese.

Sections of the vault are able to rearrange such as a hallway moving to a different level or a room spinning in place. Doors will randomly lock and unlock. There are no maps, and all rooms are designed to be as similar as possible.

Vault is wired with microphones and cameras. Every room including bed and bath are under surveillance. Every resident can view any area at anytime. If the computer picks up someone saying a residents name, (e.g. Bob is talking about Alice) that resident (Alice) will be alerted to the conversation.

A nuclear warhead is stored under the atrium floor beneath a bullet-proof glass panel. A large display will show "Time until detonation:" and will begin counting down from one year. After residents enter, the door will be permanently sealed. After one year, the warhead will be shown to be fake.

No assigned positions. All residents are of equal abilities and from equal backgrounds. Every resident is given a copy of The Communist Manifesto. All decisions are made by a vote from all vault residents.

Parents of children from Vault 29 are sent here. They are given a stranger's child to raise as their own. Subsequent generations would have all newborns randomly assigned to parents.

A vault that is totally automated for the first 100 years and then stops. All robots will shut down and non-necessary machines will stop.

A vault that is built to residence expectations. But it has one room with a tank. The tank has fuel and ammo but is stuck in the room which barely fits it. Inside joke with my friends.

High-pitched frequency pumped through the intercom causes constant headaches.

Vault-Tec Experiment Code Name: Bartertown

Everything in the Vault costs money. Vault Citizens are given monthly salaries for work done around the Vault to purchase goods and services. In effect, the Consumer Society never really dies in this Vault. All automated Vendors are RobCo design, and are not actual money slots but robots capable of processing a transaction.

Thirty Five years after the Vault is sealed, the specialized fiber that makes up the Vault's money supply begins to break down. Within Five years, "Official Tender" ceases to exist.

Vault Purpose

This Vault is set to monitor how a Consumer Based society deals with the lack of standardized currency. Of note is what eventually rises to take the place of said currency. RobCo vendors will readily accept anything of equal value as the face number in exchange, but Residents will not be aware of this. Example: A Bottle of Nuka Cola costs One Dollar, or One Toy Car, One Bobby Pin, etc.

Also of interest is if the Vault transforms into a Bartering community without a common standard currency.

Finally, observe the reaction of New Vault Residents (Second Generation onwards) vs First Generation Residents, and how adaptable the two groups are to the sudden shift.

Vault 502, unnamed location in Maine.

Population: 200 men and 200 women chosen randomly.

Layout: Fully equipped to sustain a 2000 population for 250 years.

Overseer: an AI.

Experiment Outline: as soon as the door close, the AI begins its program. Each and every man, woman and child MUST undergo a rigorous training involving fitness, diet, weapons and martial arts training, survival and scientific pursuit. At the end of each month, over the course of one week, all the vault's population is evaluated, and those found lacking are executed. Other than that, the Overseer does not interfere in any way. Vault opens either after all the population satisfies the requirements (success) or three generation have passed (failure). Then the AI forcibly expels all residents and blows the Vault up.

AT MY COMMAND, UNLEASH THE SPARTANS! :D
