[WIPz] Diablo II - ACT I

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:50 am

Many of you are more then likely familiar with the Act 1 quest in Diablo 2 where you go into the depths of a long forgotten tower to find the treasure of the Countess.

My idea is to create a dungeon similar to that but with a more intence atmosphere. Basicly it will be another multi-leveled dungeon with a boss fight and reward at the ending, but im hopeing to make it an enjoyable dungeon and not leave players feeling that the dungeon is a chore they have to finish up before getting what they want. As you journey deeper and deeper below the tower there will be less light, maybe some horrific scenery, more chalenging foes. Near the top it will be empty, a ghost or two, and decently lit. But in the deeper levels where no one has dared to search for loot there will be some objects around that could prove usefull, however there will also be stronger enemies and more dead ends. to keep it interesting im adding in some journals of fallen adventures, did they die slowly lost in the dark dungeon? or where they struck down by some undead fiend. Id also like to make a set equipment similar to those found in diablo 2 (if someone had a great armor resource i would love to use it instead of the vanilla armor/weapons). Im also considering adding a live npc that you can save(allowing him to be a loyal companion) or leave him to die.

Please share any ideas or resources that could help make this into an experiance you will enjoy with eatch new character you create.

Thanks in advance.

Never played Diablo 2, but it sounds like it'd be a great quest mod. Reminds me of Watcher's Keep from BG2

You would find an odd tome around some rubble and it would tell you the location of the tower, after roaming around you find an old destroyed tower thats in horrible shape. Once inside its a series of hallways filled with ghosts and dead ends. The top floors were pretty small and fairly easy and the bottom floors were filled with stronger enemies and the halls were longer. The bottom level was a a large room with 2 hallways at both sides that led to the countess and her minions. after you killed her there was a chest filled with gold, and a few good items. also in the main room there were 2 rooms conected to it that contained piles of gold on the floor and sum chests.

What sort of architectural theme / mood does the dungeon have? That'd help with identifying modder resources for this.

I was thinking of using the imperial hallway interiors(if i can find something with a more damaged look to it i would use it) but i can do other things to make it seem like the hallways are about to collapse

Im hopeing it will have a dark/menacing mood to it and maybe even make u feel a little lost (if I can pull it off I would love to make people feel a little frightened, but at the same time curious about the secrets of the tower). Im planning on using the lighting to help make it seem a little gloomy but im also going to make sure you have some light here and there (be it braziers or a torch you find) so your not blindy running around.

Ahh yes, I remember that dungeon now, a very fun quest. It occurs to me that some of Diablo 2's architecture could make very good tileset resources, and could probably be used in a lot of mods.

I agree and im suprised someone has not created a resource like that yet.

also and as a response to gunslinger1984...
That would be nice to play through as well, if this turns out well i may make more Diablo 2 inspired dungeons and item sets. Ive always wanted to go through some of those dungeons in first person.

*in a haunting, hollow female voice* "I will bathe in your blood!" - The Countess

I've read of some Diablo-inspired Morrowind mod projects in the past and one of them actually became one of my top five most anticipated Morrowind mods of all time. Sadly, I don't know if that one was ever finished or even what it was called (its goal was basically to make the Morrowind item-finding system more random, varied, and fun like Diablo's). I hope this project gets underway, this could be good. :^)

edit - I just realized while reading this thread, the quote should be "Care for a bloodbath?" Yeah, that's it. ;^)

Well im setting myself to a schedule and if it goes according to plan I should be able get the lay out of the first level pretty soon. right now im using a series of hallways and a room to test out different lighting to see what best sets the mood. Also if someone knows a good location ive been looking at maps all day trying to think of one. As of now im only using what came with vanilla morrowind but im keeping an eye out for good resources. If anyone is good with textures, a more worn down, and darker imperial hallway may be better to use instead of the light, good shape ones im currently using

Im planning on putting plenty of time and effort to make sure it turns out the way I envision it, and I will give updates and some screenshots when I have done enough work.

I'm very fond of Diablo2, and this sounds like it would be a great mod. As Morrowind already has vampires and dark mages, the Countess wouldn't even be that lore-breaking... for those that care about such things!

Redwoodtreesprite had some Diablo/Diablo2 style items in a mod she released a while back. I can't remember exactly what it was called - I think it was still in beta - and I have no idea what the permissions might be like, but if you're interested in items that are less vanilla and more inspired by Diablo, that might be a place to start.

I'm sure you'll find many useful resources in Mainframe's truly awesome "Tombs of Vvardenfell" project. He posted a link to his meshes and textures http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?s=&showtopic=890366&view=findpost&p=13278604.

Well it would be possible, you could just use the imperial buildings/low walls already included in morrowind. Theres some burnt out buildings in morrowind as well so a re-tex of them to match and you have tristram diablo 2 style. Though you need a wagon or two and a hanging cage.....hmmm *runs off for resources*

GOt them:

Oh and you'd need a gate meshhttp://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=3372and your good to go :D
