Dialogue In Games: Time Freeze Or Not?

Post » Sun May 17, 2015 1:41 pm

I've been playing FO3 a lot lately and every time I talk with someone, time freezes. NPCs in the background freeze mid-step, or whatever else they may be doing. It is kind of disconcerting if I pay too close attention. FO3 is not the only game that this.

Skyrim (and other games) has dialogue where time continues during the conversation. This creates situations that are more believable, but interrupts the dialogue, thus the gameplay.

Which do you prefer? I am undecided as both have their good and bad points

Before Skyrim came out I would have said I want time to pass during conversations. But I've gotten killed a few times in Skyrim during conversations with NPCs. It's really annoying to me when that has happened. So now, unless there's a fail-safe mechanism to prevent my character from dying, I think I'd prefer that time stop during conversations.

I'm gonna say no and that's also letting me move around. Let me circle someone with weapons raised as they talk about my impending doom. Some talks crap, I can hit them in the face mid conversation. It lets me walk away as they are talking, like have a radius that after u go so far away from the npc that they stop talking mid sentence. Etc etc.

The simplest fix would be to let time pass during conversation, but have the game force exit you from the conversation when you're threatened. And while they're at it, could they please do something about having some NPC come running up to you and force-starting you into conversation while you're in battle? :swear:

Yes! Those are 2 main factors that get me raging at Skyrim. But I like NPCs not in the conversation continue doing whatever they are doing.

Well, most RPGs I've played tend to "grab" the player for the dialogue box with options to pop up. I do not think I've played one where I could attack, let alone move besides hitting the key out of the dialogue.

Yeah I'm with Pseron. I also hate when npc's wander away from your field of vision while talking to them.

Neither have bothered me when playing RPGs, so I'm okay with both.
