[IDEA] IN < 4 Dialogue

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:44 am

If you want to experience true happiness, do yourself a favor: Start up Fallout 2 and play as a character with an Intelligence of 3 or lower. Perhaps it was only intended as a nod to the prequel, or perhaps one designer didn't show up at the morning meeting the day they scrapped it, but the only place I've seen Stupid dialogue in New Vegas is around the HELIOS power plant, and a few lines here and there other places. But can't we do better? I know it's a million dollar project, but if the entire game dialogue could be made stupid I'd seriously quit my dayjob. Yelling "ICE CREAM!" at the password-scanner in the REPCONN HQ was one of the highlights in this game to me, I'd love to see more of it. Obviously it's too much work to stupidify all the quests and dialogue in the game, but that's the beauty of it - you're stupid! Scrap'em! The main storyline would have to be doable, but apart from that, most of the dialogue is way above your head. Anyone say Aye to this?

My previous character had an Int of 3, and there was some stupid dialogue, not much though. For example to guess who: "Me come to replace you because me smarter than you."

On topic, i approve :goodjob:

And once again i replied before reading  There's an example of smart dumb dialogue, i guess

Yeah, the whole HELIOS is a bunch of laughs when you're stupid! Which makes it all the more irritating that your character talks like a normal, sane person once you go out of there. I'm going to start dumbing down Goodsprings to see if this can be done at all...

This sounds amazing, I figure the most effective way of doing this is to have one person do the actual GECK work and then have people help out with rewriting lines to sound completely braindead. I loved Helios on my stupid character, and I wish the stupid dialogue had been completed.

sure you can do it, just add new response line to the dialogue and set their condition to getAV Int < 4, running on the player reference... only problem will be making dialogues that fit the vanilla dialogue voice acting wise, as good as impossible
if you want your character to say stupid things add new topics and add confitions to that topic and the original one (original = getAV (player REF) >= 4 // moron = getAV (player REF) < 4)
sounds good to me actually :D

Hell yes. It's rather disappointing that you sound normal most of the time and then you randomly say that you come in Pizza at Helios One.

Yeah, I've had a TON of experience editing dialogue from my Oblivion vampire mod, it's definitely doable. I was thinking more like, is it possible to do before dying of old age? So far I've managed to disable all of the normal dialogue in Goodsprings for IN < 4 characters, I'm currently adding it back in with a new touch. The player now thinks Victor is a TV, but gets sad when he can't change the channel to watch cartoons. Also, Doc Mitchell now hands you a free "lollipop" (stimpak) every day, and you can't talk to Easy Pete because he smells so bad.

Isn't there a low intelligence response in the first conversation with Veronica too? That you believe the Brotherhood of Steel are freaks shooting lasers out of their eyes or something?

Yeah, but that's IN < 6. We're talking serious moron dialogue here, like in FO 1 and 2 if you ever played that, which will show up if you have IN <4. The player is then barely able to form coherent sentences, and doesn't really understand what people say to him unless they speak in big, easy words.

Yeah, a conversation would go somewhat like this. P is for Player, N is for NPC:

P: Hurr, Hello?!
N: Uhm...hello there, anything I can do for ya?
P: Me want work! Me work real good!
N: Oh, right...I...uhm, sure I've got work for ya...
P: Good, me do work, get big rew...rewa...caps!
N: Alright, I've got some trouble with Geckos.
P: Huh?
N: Geckos! Big lizard things!
P: Oh right, I know big lizard things!
N: Good, they're over there...go kill them.
P: Okay, me get puppy when me get back right?!
N: Sure, whatever...

Haha! That's right! Though I was thinking of doing this with as little silent dialogue from the NPCs as possible, by moving around dialogue from other topics. Here's how I've planned Easy Pete's dialogue:

Greeting, Perception > 4:
Courier Six: "Urk *sniff sniff*, bad smell. Me go away now".
Easy Pete: "Yup"

Greeting, Perception < 4
Courier Six: "Grampa! Wut present me get dis time?"
Easy Pete: "Bad trouble."

If there's some really important quest with no appropriate dialogue I'll try to edit the sound files, like this guy's done:

This came to mind

Sulik: Hey, fren. Our name be Sulik. What you be needin'
PC: Uh?
Sulik: Most people have evil spirits. You? You have stupid spirits.
Go see shaman, get hole in head... Big hole... Very big... Huge.
PC: Gug! (you look concerned)
Sulik: Don't want a hole? Go see Torr, he your spirit-brother. He work for Maida-with-no-smiles. Just like we and I.

Sounds good. I'll probably hold off on making another low-intelligence character until this project is done, however long that may be.

Due to the infinitely cumbersome way the GECK handles voice lines, I won't be doing spoken dialogue. Here's what I've planned for Goodsprings:

Doc Mitchell: In the character gen, when you start answering his questions, he'll discover you're a moron. He'll ask you to wait in the couch and go into the adjacent room. While he's gone, you can squiggle on his "funny papers" and fill out the tag skills/traits. When you're done, he'll come back with 3 Mentats ("Smart Pills") and a Stimpak("Lollipop"), give you your stuff and tell you to stay in town. You can ask him for a free "Lollipop" every day, but can't trade with him. He can heal your health("Ow!"), radiation("Blurgh...") and addictions ("MOR PILLZ!") as normal.

Victor: You can try to change his TV channel.

Easy Pete: With a PE of <5 you can talk to him, he'll give you some info on the NCR, Legion and Big Horners.

Sunny: You can help her kill the Geckos. She'll give you some Healing Powders, but not the quest to make them.

Trudy: You can learn that Joe Cobb is looking for Ringo. If you have CH>4 you can tell her she's "perdy", she'll then tell you a bit more about the Powder Gangers and will give you a free bottle of Sarsaparilla.

Joe Cobb: With a ST of 7 he'll tell you to go find and kill Ringo, starting Run Goodsprings Run.

Ringo: He'll tell you to watch out for Joe Cobb.

Goodsprings vs. Powder Gangers
If you kill either Joe Cobb or Ringo the Powder Gangers will attack, putting you on the appropriate team. You can't do any of the preparations, but you can kill off the attackers/defenders as normal. When you're done, if Joe Cobb's alive he will tell you to get out of his town (though you'll still get good rep with the Powder Gangers). If Ringo's alive he will suggest you go work as a caravan guard and put the Crimson Caravan Company on your map.

Why? A moron wouldn't realistically have that many options, and there's always Mentats. To me, one of the biggest letdowns of Fallout's transition into the new generation of videogames was that your SPECIAL suddenly didn't matter at all. I'd like to see more mods that prevent you from using a weapon if you don't meet its requirements, makes food and sleep actually matter in hardcoe, etc. Then again, I'm an RPG extremist.

Klint: Good day to you Chosen One. You have not completed the Temple of Trials, and may not pass.
Chosen One: Oon Ga.
Klint: *sigh* Chosen One. You go temple. You take test. You not come back until take test. Obey Elder. Go!
Chosen One: Me go.

The dialogue in the Helios quest uses the conversation editor - you can add an extra 'dumb' converasation topic, but it only replaces the player dialogue not the NPC dialogue, which is why it ends up sounding odd. In reality it's a half-implemented feature, it doesn't affect quest outcomes.

A conversation between a stupid character and No-bark would be hilarious... "What is dis Chupabracandy?"

Exactly, the key phrase in the term Role-Playing Game is Role-Playing. Your character has certain flaws and abilities. If your character is dumb then why would he have the same abilities as characters who are smart? THIS is what Fallout 3 and Oblivion lacked. True Role-Playing. New Vegas makes an attempt at it, but comes short.

Bump, I don't know why talking deathclaws, which are extinct, are getting more attention than something like this.
