[REQ] Dialogue that doesn't tell you the skill requirements

Post » Wed Sep 29, 2010 6:31 pm

I've searched the Nexus and haven't found a mod of this sort, so please let me know if something like this already exists.

Basically, I'd like to be able to play without knowing exactly how many skill points are needed for each dialogue option. I don't want to get rid of skill checks altogether; I just don't want to be shown the requirements when choosing what to say. I'm something of a habitual but reluctant metagamer, and I'd like to play NV without this information displayed to prevent myself from ruining the game experience and replay value for myself. If anyone knows of a mod that does this or would be willing to make one, I'd be very grateful for the help. It seems like it would be pretty easy to do in the Construction Set, if a bit tedious; I would make it myself if it weren't for the aforementioned concern.

It's actually not, as to prevent themselves from having the tedious task of putting all the "Speech 30"'s in there in the first place they've set it up to automatically display [Stat Value] when you've got that condition on the dialogue. You can't even override it properly with the 'Display stat/skill/perk' entry option used in things like [Child At Heart].

Dang. I was afraid of that. So you can't change it in the CS, then. But is it hard-coded? Or could someone with the appropriate programming knowledge remove it without too much hassle? (With the added benefit that they would be spared the tedium of going through each individual dialogue option.)

I haven't actually tried this yet, but I'm planning on giving it a shot in my next playthrough:

http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37467 Haven't really had a chance to test it out, as I've been putting of my current game until several mods are available and I start a new character.
Though it wouldn't be there if it didn't work.

I brought this up in Darn's thread, and he seemed to have some idea how to do it. Not sure if he'll incorporate that into his mod, though.

Yeah, I can testify that that mod works perfectly. Have been using it since it released.

This bothered me too, the 'you need x more points to pass this skill check' felt too game-y for me. But that mod alters every single dialogue piece that contains such a speech check so that doesn't sound like the best solution... It would be great if it could be an optional feature in DarN's UI somehow.
