Dialogue Tree Editor - Really?

Post » Wed Jan 20, 2010 6:58 pm

I'm just going to quote oscuro in another http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1140463-dialogue-questions/:

In the new editor, you just need to double-click on a Topic's Info (which you create by right-clicking on a Topic and selection "Add Child"), and that will open a new window that's called "Info Properties." The first field in that window is the equivalent of the old editor's "Response Text" window, but with a larger space with which to work. Right-click on this field, select "New," and you're in business again

(Edit - for more info)
Also, keep in mind that you can quickly add Responses to an Info by linking them. If you already have an Info somewhere, and you want it to follow another Info due to the way you're structuring your dialogue, then you can easily link them.

Right-click on the Info that's to follow as a Response, select "Copy," then right-click on a different Info, and select "Paste As Link." This is a great method to visually link dialogue nodes in complex trees.

The problem is when I right click on a topic in the dialogue tree (the grey filled in circle) I only get two options - open all children and edit. There is no option to 'add a child'. Selecting edit gives me a prompt box saying 'Unimplemented: For now, edit topics from the topics tab.

Editing the children seems to have further difficulties. I obviously can't right click on the topic and select add child - that option doesn't appear anywhere. If I right click on one of the children (the white circles) I get a couple of options some (most) of which seem non-functional.

Open all children doesn't work because I can't add any children onto the child (which I think is meant to be the whole point of the dialogue tree since it lets you control the different nodes easily).

Edit info just turfs me back to the topics tab with the appropriate topic selected (in which case what is the point since I could just work out of the topics tab like we used to for Oblivion and Fallout 3 anyway).

Edit response brings up the edit response window, but considering that I can't create any new responses (I have to already write the responses in the topics tab for them to display) again there isn't any point to editing the response since I would already have the text written, plus it doesn't allow you to create a new response (i.e you are only able to have one response per info unless you add them via the topics tab again).

New allows you to create a new info and response for the topic, but when you do so it can cause the topic tab to malfunction by not showing any of the infos/responses - and this includes in other pre-exisitng quests. Plus it often just crashes the geck outright when you select it.

Copy just creates a copy of the info/responses under the same topic, when you right click on another info (as oscuro says to do so above) there is no 'paste as link option'.

Delete works as expected.

Move to topic is non-functional. Selecting it doesn't seem to do anything.

Move to quest is the same as move to topic.

Using the dialogue tree editor causes the conditions of dialogue to not display when you swtich back to the topics tab.

Using the dialogue tree editor in general seems to crash the Geck quite often even when just selecting different options.

---------

This is very strange for two reasons, firstly:

I've been using it and it's so great to work in v. the Topics tab in a Quest for building conversations

Why does it work for llamaRCA and not for me?

And secondly when I poked around with it a little earlier I remember being able to add children to a topic and info (and set up a choice link by doing so). So why would it not be working for me now?

You have to have topics under the grey circle to get any of the options; the grey circle doesn't have the options. They appear in blue and red (player and NPC statements). Once you have those you can right click on them. I started by filling in some topics that started the conversation I was planning in my Dialogue Quest (I hadn't tried out the new Editor yet) and then going to play with it. I haven't tried it with nothing from the start and don't know how to get that jumpstarted.

However, once I had dialogue to play with it was very cooperative.

It will allow me to add Child and to assign it an Editor ID and then it is added to my Quest which is so much easier than doing it the old way and then there is the great thing that it lays the entire Conversation out to be seen, which makes writing dialogue much easier as well. I'm doing all simple dialogue in my Quest (one line statments back and forth). Oh, also, I can't get the dialogue I want unless I choose "Load Topics not off the main branch" under Advanced Options.

The options that I was talking about were there when I used dialogue from a quest I had already completed, so I did have topics under the grey circle. There is no blue and red statements though, the player dialogue is listed next to the grey circle, and the npc dialogue is listed next to the white circle.

It will allow me to add Child and to assign it an Editor ID and then it is added to my Quest which is so much easier than doing it the old way and then there is the great thing that it lays the entire Conversation out to be seen, which makes writing dialogue much easier as well. I thought it might have been because I had edited the ini to allow for more text in the topic text, but after reverting back to the original ini it still hasn't work. I know I remember seeing add child before...

Where is this advanced options menu button?

Oh, okay, I understand now. I didn't catch it earlier. Sorry. There is a new place, a new Dialogue Editor, to use in addition to what we've always done in a Quest. When you open the GECK and there are the categories/pull downs you can choose from File, Edit, View etc., well under that are all the buttons, etc., at the very right end is a new button that looks like a right justified paragraph. Click on that. It's the new Conversation Editor. That's what we've been talking about. My GECK also crashes if I try to look at anything in the Dialogue Tree tab in a Quest btw.
