Dice Rolls

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 10:51 pm

Do people even know what "dice rolls" are? Seriously, most people seem to have no idea.
Even CoD has dice-rolls, and most people still say that TES unconditionally shouldn't have them... :banghead:

What kind of amazing fantasy world are you living in where anyone arguing passionately about something has a clue what they're talking about, ever?

Would you like to explain what they are? I always thought it was the percentage chance of damage caused, like criticals, though I may be wrong.

dice rolling in the internal and passive mechanics of the game are sort of unavoidable
when people refer to dice rolling, it's usually safe to assume they mean skill checks

Dice rolls really just means it uses a random generator in the game some where and 99% of games use them

Yes, and without them an open world game like TES will be static and weird.
Also about skill checks. Without skill check you would be able to precisely calculate the outcome of everything that isn't player controlled based on stats. Unless we have an insane amount of factors. :tops:

But not in every game you'll know what your chances. In DnD you before you go into battle what your chances to hit will be.

People probably refer to the MW system dice rolls: not always hitting, magic failing to cast etc.

I actually had some friends over last night and we dusted off the old D&D and rolled some dice. So....yes, I know what dice rolls are and that they take place behind the scenes in our CRPGs. :P Gosh I had a blast last night.

I think they are used in CoD to spawn different variations of soldiers, which sometimes screws up and spawn two soldiers that look exactly the same... (happens in most other games too)

Dice-rolls are in every RPG. But someone are more intrusive than others. One thing I wouldn't like is to see the annoying dice-roll system in Morrowind's combat, where you kept swinging your sword on a mudcrab thousands of times just to hit it twice.

If implemented well but not annoying and frustating it can make the experience better. As for skill-checks, I definately want to see more of it. FNV did it well, hell New Vegas did everything an RPG has extremely good.

This discussion isn't about CoD, the point is that CoD is a "shallow shooter game" kind of game that people compare RPGs with. If you want to know where dice rolls are obvious in CoD: Bullet accuracy, NPC accuracy, spawnpoints, rocket flight paths... It's all random, if it wasn't the game wouldn't work right.

No. It's a fish. And apparently it likes to play games.

Of course I know about dice rolling. They should add that to the game. But it would be more immersive if you have to roll the dice yourself with the grab key, and if you mess up and drop them off the table everyone will laugh at you and you automatically lose your bet. But your luck stat could prevent that from happening if its high enough.

I love dice rolls :twirl:

The more unpredictable something is, the more fun it is because you can't just second guess it.

There weren't enough dice rolls in Oblivion, not nearly enough.

I want dice rolls to decide if a spawn point should show 1 or more enemies; I want dice rolls to decide if a spawn point should spawn at all; I want dice rolls to decide what lock level a container (perhaps with a luck variable included so the luckier you are, the weaker the lock is likely to be).

I love randomness in games, there needs to be more.

All hail the mighty dice roll!

the entire game should be dice rolls from the character generator to the quests and the world should be randomly generated by dice rolls! think of the possibilities!

Dice rolls is when you decide on something with one or two die alone.

Morrowind doesn't use dice rolls. It has complete formulas. But no animation for dodge, miss, parry. It has no animations for hits either actually. Blunt weapons work because that primitive hit animation fits. In Oblivion, now bows work, blunts a little better. There are still blades and axes. And spears. In Skyrim, I expect at least one more weapon to be simulated correctly. Throwable weapons would be nice too.

Simulations aren't only random numbers. There are rules and formulas to follow.

Dice Rolls are cool...remind me of my youth playing Dungeons and Dragons back in the 70s and 80s.
