Did anyone else prefer Oblivions 2D map?

Skyrim map is nice and all but those clouds give me severe FPS drops.

I like the 2D map better because you could learn your route

I also liked the guilds in oblivion + skyrims lacking npcs in cites

Skyrim's map sure is pretty, but when clouds roll over and I physically can't see the route I need to take it really is a pain in the behind. Some mountains are only scaleable from one side, and you can't zoom in on the map enough to clearly see that route half the time, especially when there are weather effects in the way.

Like I say, it's pretty... but far less user-friendly than Oblivion's. There isn't a whole lot of common sense behind it anyways.

My main issue is that you can't see roads. The Mao to me is "do I go north, south, east, or west. I can't plan a journey with it because all I see are clouds. I'm hoping someone mods a useful Map at some point.

One thing that annoys me, i don't get why you can tilt the map. It's not pinball.

I think it looks nice, but it's not practical, when you go over 200+ locations, they are all so packed together i can't find anywhere. Prefer the old style, easier to find places through map recognition.

I like a 2D map a lot more.
But Godfather II's 3D map was actually pretty good.
Thing is, Gofather's map wasn't smeared and had clouds all over the damn thing.
I could look at a location and instantly regognize where it was.
With Skyrim's 3D map on the other hand I have to go by orientation and map markers.
Like, I know that Markarth is to the west, and Riften to the southeast, and Winterhold to the northeast.
But the actual land, I don't know anything about it, and the map is too smeared and cloudy to make out anything but the map markers and water.

So I prefer a 2D map but a 3D map can be done well too, Skyrim's wasn't though.

Overall I think Skyrim beats Oblivion in pretty much every way, buuut the one thing I think I liked more about Oblivion so far is its 2D map. I'm only level 17 so maybe I'll find something else eventually, but I just find Skyrims 3D map hard to navigate and it just doesn't feel like a map.

Yes yes yes. I hate the 3D map. I hate that it loads at random resolutions for me, sometimes blurry, sometimes rather crisp. I hate that it has no roads. I hate that I actually have to scroll over this ridiculous mountain every time I want to get around Whiterun.

I hate that it doesn't look like a map.

I'd quite like my map to be, y'know, a map: so, yes. Skyrim's daft 3D model is a classic case of form over function in that it looks very snazzy but is virtually useless; but after the 23 seconds it takes for the novelty to wear off, I really wanted just an ordinary 2D map with roads, settlements and major landmarks on it. I'd go as far as to say that the map has undermined my enjoyment of the game somewhat: not just because it's useless but because it seems I must derive a certain amount of enjoyment from seeing where I am, where I want to go and how to get there, etc. Seems I'm a closet cartographer at heart.

I think they must of thought Fable 3 had one so we must do it better!

Copying Fable 3 is fail in the first place but copying Fable 3 and making it worse.. ?! :bonk:

What were you thinking?! .. I mean thank you, come again.

I like the idea of it, and I frankly don't care about the little details of the overworld. I'm glad towns and dungeons have more detailed maps.

I don't have any problems with Skyrim's map. As far as roads, there are plenty of those funny boards with words on them pointing toward destinations. What are they called again?

It's still nice to see where the road actually goes, though. At least I think it is.

The initial 'splash' of the Skyrim map was cool, because well... it looks really cool.

But then again, a map isn't supposed to show you everything in detail, but rather indicate what the country looks like. By the time I had visited many of Skyrim's major settlements and towns, the gaps in the map were sort of filling in themselves because I knew what things would look like.

So Yeah, in the end I prefer Oblivion's map.

I definitely prefer the Oblivion style 2-D map.

The Skyrim map is one of the weakest features of the game, maybe THE weakest. It sort of ruins immersion to have a 3D map on call-up at all times, almost like my Khajiit is running around with a digital GPS or something.

Oblivion's map was way better as a map. Skyrim's map is a "you are here" map. Oblivion's was an actual navigational map.

This.

I'd much prefer the paper map that came with Skyrim be the in-game one. It'd be much more useful as a "map" than the 3D one.
(Especially once you get lots of markers active on the 3D map..... with the bumpy mountain ranges, and the limited rotation, they end up being more confusing, since foreground markers that are high up overlap with lower down markers that are far behind them.)

edit: but, then, I was saying a 2D map would be better months ago.

so your telling me that everyone who comments saying "there arent roads" wants them to plan routes to a marked destination? LOL im pretty sure with an open world to explore and plenty to gain by not fast traveling that having no roads on a map is the least of your worries.

plus if you cant chart a course based on visual ques itself within the game world than the map, then im not sure about your IQ aswell

Just because your all about Skyrim being the best in every way TES game, doesn't mean you should insult others just for disagreeing with you.

Like the perk trees, Skyrim's map is gimmicky to the point of annoyance.

I will, however, say that I actually LIKE the inability to see roads and other fine detail. When combined with turning off the compass, it really becomes an exercise in learning the landscape and scouting to find my way around Skyrim - just as if I was wandering through an unknown land in RL.

At the very least a map should show roads.

I'd like Skyrim's map better if you could zoom in farther and zoom out farther. Not being able to see the roads is kind of annoying but otherwise I think it's beautiful. The Clairvoyance spell is basically a necessity if the place you're going is in a mountainous area (and like 60% of the map is mountains)

But since there's a mod for that it's fine, I just haven't bothered to install it yet for some reason
