Did anyone else prefer Oblivions 2D map?

Post » Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:30 pm

Overall I think Skyrim beats Oblivion in pretty much every way, buuut the one thing I think I liked more about Oblivion so far is its 2D map. I'm only level 17 so maybe I'll find something else eventually, but I just find Skyrims 3D map hard to navigate and it just doesn't feel like a map.

Yes, a flat map is much better and fantasy like than a 3D model of the game world.

It's like looking at an average game, inside an average game.

im fine with it. the one advantage the paper map had is that when i got bored with one style i could swap it out with another style of map. it also made more ingame sense i guess but since im only looking at my map for literally seconds every hour or so its low on my list of niggles.

Oblivion's map was way better as a map. Skyrim's map is a "you are here" map. Oblivion's was an actual navigational map.

I've enjoyed having to find my way around, but as a map it fails.

Oblivions map was better. You can't even see roads on Skyrims map.

I think most people do.

Before Skyrim's release I was so worried the 3d map would only be there to look pretty and be pretty worthless compared to the pre-order map.
Everyone told me it'd be fine and the map would be very useful.
Pfffft. :cryvaultboy:

Definitely.

Oblivion's whole UI was a lot better in my opinion.

yea, it was easier to tell where things were when i wanted to get something done fast but it did not give that much away (which i liked). on skyrim's map iv had to turn it (which i hate doing for some reason) just to see what side of the mountain a cave was but i know were every mountain is, every plain, every forest, and so on. but like the other guy said, i dont see that much so it is not te top of my complaints

This map sometimes makes my game lag :o. So yeah, looking forward for some mod for a 2D map.

Agreed, I liked OB's map better. Much easier to tell where you are. You could clearly see roads, the roads were labeled, and the bodies of water were labeled. Like, oh, I don't know, an actual map?

That's because it's not a map. It's a 3D model of the game world.

That aside, I agree. I don't like it. It's very pretty, but it falls well short of the functionality it needs. While it does show relative relations between locations, it's all but useless for finding a route between those locations. Most of the roads are nearly impossible to see. If I'm on a road, the map is only good or telling me if the road will lead me in the right general direction. If I'm not on a road or if my destination is far away, the map is useless to me.

I would much rather have a 2D map with the info I need to navigate than a shiny 3D map.

Agreed. This one looks good, but it's not very functional and most importantly also unrealistic.

Very much agreed. Not that Oblivion's UI was spectacular or anything, Skyrim's UI just sets a very very low bar to surpass.

I would have greatly preferred the physical map we got with the pre-orders to have been used as the in-game map as well.

I actually find myself wondering why I can't rotate the map a full 360 degrees.

It's really not that hard to navigate in the first place, and I can't imagine why you'd need a detailed map to get around with, so I would have to say that skyrim's map is far and away better, because seriously, who needs a map that tells you where to place each foot along your route? c'mon guys.

Try driving a car across your country using google maps in satellite mode instead of normal topographic mode.

The change in perspective can be a little disorienting. I was trying to make it to a quest marker that appeared to have been placed within the Thalmoor embassy, but after wasting several minutes wandering around looking for it and fighting the Thalmoor guards, I realized the marker was actually north of the embassy, but at a lower altitude which with the 3d made the marker appear to be just above the embassy instead.

Skyrims map is terrible. Theres no other way of saying it.. it svcks. It has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Having a 3d model gives no insight or assistance to my travels at all, it hinders it infact. Gimick through and through.

I liked Oblivions map much better.

Skyrims map is not only somewhat immersion breaking, it's also often confusing because when you have a mountainous area on the map its often impossible to see whether a location that's marked on it as on the front or the back of the mountain, and sometimes you might even mistakenly think it's behind the mountain alltogether.

It probably wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so cloudy on the map all the time. Being able to see roads would be awesome for figuring out how to get somewhere.

The map svcks and isn't very immersive. Are we really carrying around a 3d world model in our pockets? A 2d overlay for it would be nice to have.

It shows the cliffsides and hard to reach areas much better than the Oblivion map, that cannot show elevation.

... now if we could only rotate it fully...

As for roads and such, neither did Morrowind show any roads, and it was for the better, as it tend to help encourage exploration.
