GI did "Ask Todd Howard About Skyrim" (03/02)

What do you mean "mine out" a town?

In Oblivion it always felt like you entered a town, picked up the three or four quests, and then the people in that town faded into the background. They had no problems anymore, no conflict of any kind most of the time.

I'd prefer a certain amount of random quests so that there's constantly something that needs doing in each town.

You know I bet Todd could convince a Penguin that the South Pole is actually the North Pole and the Penguin would believe it.

I like the stuff about the cooking and crafting, it sounds good although it's not based on skill it's probably going to be similar to an altar where you go up to it and then a menu appears and then you make whatever.

Hmmmm... I'm very suspicious to the possibility that spears might be only used as a ranged weapon...

That's true. I'd like to be able to remember more names than just Fargoth, that emperor guy and Martin...

Since when are Xbox graphics "smoother" than PC graphics?

Todd Howard, you're killin' me.

Don't know where you are getting this... he said no such thing.

He said that? He also said companions are shallow? Why would he even say that?

He did. He said that graphics are usually done at the Xbox level, because they're "smoother," and then most of that is transfered to the PC.

Before that, though, he said that they were going to have a large number of companions, but had to sacrifice depth of character just to have that large number of them.

I'm just saying but he's very good at convincing and telling people about a game/product. When you listen to him it's like "Wow that makes a lot of sense", instead of "Huh what does that do". I think a lot of us are convinced that Skyrim will be good (Which it will be) and the fact that he does a good job at explaining the features of a game. He's not the type of person that you'll get bored of if you listen to him for an hour talking like on the podcast, hence the convince a penguin line.

No answers about combat/mercantile/acrobatics, which is what I'm most interested in. Also I think Pete and Todd have serious communication issues with their technical staff. Ummm, guys there haven't been any improvements for the pc in your past 3 games.

Why was the picture changed from the tavern girl with the mountains in the background to one of the wallpapers?

They are a ranged weapon? :S

There are different types of spears. Light spears to throw used much like African tribe hunters do. Heavy spears used by infantry to defend against cavalry in medieval warfare. And medium spears used as a melee weapon by Chinese monks.

I was hoping for a spear that could be used with a shield or as a two handed melee weapon.

I really hope someone got that picture... New screenshots are always welcome, especially when they slip like that.

Todd Howard, you're killin' me.

Other way around, xbox 360 is the weakest platform so they have to have the game running well on it, it will also determine minimum PC specifications, had been pretty stupid to develop the game on high end pc and then port to xbox 360.

He did. He said that graphics are usually done at the Xbox level, because they're "smoother," and then most of that is transfered to the PC.

What he meant is that since the XBox 360 has fixed hardware, any graphics made for it (and any console for that matter) can be super finetuned to work as smoothly as possible, i.e. no frame cuts or choppy animations. The PC, on the other hand, is an endless continuum of various hardware combinations, and adapting a console game to look better on it isn't really that hard. If they did it the other way around, however, the console graphics would suffer from it, since you can't go from wide to narrow that easily when it comes to hardware.
