Did Bethesda pick a bad release date?

Ones a fps, ones an RPG.. please tell me why you're confusing two completely different games.

Call Of Duty is severely overrated it's the same thing over and over again every year, kinda makes you wonder about Halo I mean they release bi yearly although this year is an exception but that's because of the 10 anniversery edition. Both games pale in comparasion to the massive juggernut that is Skyrim. The release date is perfect, Europe gets it the same day as the USA and the forum doesn't have to worry about people revealing the game too early besides some unhappy pirates taking issues with certain things that have happened in the last month (Use Goggle for more info on what those issues are).

The only bad thing about the release date is it isn't here yet.

Couldn't agree more, 11-11-11 needs to get here now.

We've had several of these threads, and no, CoD is not going to make a big impact on Skyrim. Completely different target demographics, and regardless, Skyrim is a huge title and they really don't need to worry about when they release because it's not some game most people are only going to pick up if nothing else is out.

How can people be so dense? Call of Duty is very popular and one of the best selling game franchises ever. Sales WILL be lost. There are plenty of people who like both series but don't have enough money for both games.
Personally I think Skyrim will do just fine, but it would do much better if Modern Warfare 3 wouldn't be released in the same month.

Awesome numbers, released on a friday for weekend sales, right before Christmas. I think they did a good job.

CoD doesnt really have sequels anyway. It just grows a few new pubas and gets plastic surgery once a year like an ugly celebrity.

Truthfully Skyrim is the only game I am truly excited for this year. I am blessed enough to afford to buy everything coming out, but I am also to frugal(wife says cheap) to buy FPS games before price drops. Actually I don't see a game worth $60 other than Skyrim coming out this year.

Do you think it would've been tasteful if Battlefield or Modern Warfare was released on this day? Because i'm sure they would've taken it as the ultimate marketing date for a game like theirs.

Couldn't care less about MW3

Beth chose 11.11.11 for the gimmick, nothing more. It was around the timeframe the game would be ready, and they did it because it was memorable. If some gamers are on a budget, then chances are they'll just get the game one way or another during the holiday season rather than the day it comes out.

I think more and more gamers are finally figuring out that CoD is nothing more then a cash cow beyond being stale. Hopefully it doesn't do well so IW is forced to finally change.

I think Beth revealed Skyrim's date before Activision revealed the date of M.W.3.

Anyway,11/11/11 is a good date because it's easier to remember and I guess that's the reason they decided this date.

TES fans and COD fans don't tend to be the same people. However, Zelda: Skyward Sword is also a major release, it's a fantasy game with more or less medieval themes, releasing only 9 days after Skyrim. I realize that the RPG audience and the Zelda audience differ a bit, but still, these games will definitely cut into each others' sales, being so similar in theme and setting. I'm confident that the end result will be Zelda getting totally overshadowed by Skyrim, which is sort of a shame because it's been in the works for so long, but they did it to themselves. Skyrim's release date had been long established when Nintendo chose 11-20-11 for Zelda.

Zelda games are only a shadow of their former selves, sadly. :(

I haven't bought one since Twilight Princess... the day the game died...

This is not a thread for debating how "good" the CoD series is.

So, I finally got around to checking to see if any MW3 videos had been released since E3, and while watching some spec ops gameplay thing, I saw that the release date for MW3 was 11-8-11. Now, I'm not saying that CoD is better than ES, but CoD has been one of the top selling series for a few years now, and there's no doubt in my mind that there will already be millions of players online by the time Skyrim comes out.

From a financial standpoint, it's just an awful release date, considering many gamers are going to drop $60 dollars on MW3 and play only that game for the next few months. When Oblivion came out (in March if I remember), it was really the only major title released in that month. Fallout 3 did release in the same year as WaW, but WaW never really had as big of a release as other CoD games.

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way, but isn't it sort of a bad idea to release Skyrim only 3 days after probably the biggest (in terms of sales) title of the year comes out?

GameInformer did a survey on which game people are anticipating the most. Skyrim cam out on top. Over Assassins Creed, and CoD. It was in their most recent magazine. (Just got it yesterday)

I agree with you there...The series used to be really good. I enjoyed Twilight Princess, it seemed like a much more mature storyline less cartoonish. But I wont buy this one...Ocarina of time was the best of them all.

Bethesda's release date is ideal, firstly it's a catchy date, secondly there's enough time before holidays for word to spread to non-TESers from the people that have it so they (those that don't have it) will be clamoring to get it for the holidays, thirdly, regardless of other games and their dates, Bethesda chose a date that works for them and everyone else has to put their date before or after it because they know TES rulez! :tes: I seriouly doubt there will be a significant impact on Skyrim sales just because game X is being released before or after Skyrim. Just my two pence!

Unfortunately for Wii owners Skyward Sword is going to be the last game that matters for this console.
Wii hasn't seen an AAA title since last year's Fall, and Zelda will be the last game of this console.
Most Wii owners keep them in the corner collecting dust. I think that a part of them have already forget about Wii and is looking for Wii U from now and on,while another part of them will just pick it to own the last game of the console.
But it's highly possible that Nintendo will release a Wii U port of S.S. shortly after Wii U is out.

I also have a Wii and I like Zelda games, but I'm playing Skyrim first and by the time I get bored of Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 will already be out so I will jump at it.
Probably I might some time get S.S. if I find it at a lower price one or two years after it came out.
Skyrim just has more dungeons, larger world, more quests, better A.I.,graphics,music,and the list goes on...
I've been following Zelda since Ocarina of Time, but this time....

I am not sure that a release date matters all that much for most gamers. I have bought as many as 5 titles in the same week. If I am looking forward to a game then I will buy it. As for CoD... never played them... have no desire to try them either. Games that focus that heavily on multiplayer usually make awful single player games.

Thought the Wii U was backwards-compatible with Wii games?

My friend's little brother, who's obsessed with the CoD games, also seems quite excited about Skyrim. Well, to the extent that he will probably just buy both games (or have them bought for him), but there are indeed some people who like both. :turned: I too find mindless shooters fun if they're played in good company, but I'd never waste my money on one.

I personally will buy Uncharted 3 at 1st of November but perhaps later also Skyrim if I'll have more money, and if I can get over the fact that it requires Steam. Poor people like me are probably the ones who might not buy Skyrim, but fortunately for Bethesda we don't make up too much of their sales... right?
