Did Bethesda pick a bad release date?

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 12:02 pm

Not Really, Elder Scrolls is actually the most Anticipated game this fall according to a recent poll done by Game Informer. They also both have a different target audience that buys their games. So I don't see them worried about not getting the FPS crowd. There is also all the sells they will get due to pre-orders which allowed people buy the game ahead of time and put money down on both if they wanted to.

Bethesda doesn't have to worry about CoD. Only Developer who does is the one behind Battlefield 3 that is going head to head with them for the FPS crowd.

I feel like setting the release date 2-3 weeks before MW3 would have been a better option.

There was no option. They set that date when they announced the game in December 2010. MW3 wasn't even announced until way after that. How could they have set a date 2-3 weeks before a game that didn't exist?

Bethesda needs money in order to make games. I feel like setting the release date 2-3 weeks before MW3 would have been a better option. Releasing any game after MW3 honestly just seems like a terrible idea. It doesn't matter how much you think CoD svcks, it always outsells every other game each holiday season.

Because it's COD. All the 10 year olds are buying it. Haven't you HEARD?

The overwhelming popularity of both series means that there is a significant overlap in the target audiences of the two games, but by no means is every TES fan a CoD fan. You'd find that the be quite the opposite of the truth if you asked around on here, despite the fact that, no, the userbase here on the Bethesda forums is not representative of the series' following as a whole. Bethesda has nothing to worry about. If we follow your silly pony-based logic then nobody should release anything during the month of November at all, including Ubisoft and Mojang.

Although I agree with you that their games are poorly designed. I do like their stories. But it seems that BF3 will blow CoD back to being another wannabe or maybe just maybe it may make activision/treyarch take longer to make their games so they actually are good instead of pumping out a title every year.

If I'm not mistaken, Infinity Ward made Modern Warfare 2 so it'll likely be them that makes MW3, not Treyarch. If that makes any difference to you...

I personally will play both, I'll just play Skyrim a whole lot more.

Yes and no. On the one hand its in the middle of the pre-christmas rush, alongside a huge batch of other. Battlefield, MW3, Uncharted, Batman, Saints row 3 to name just a few. On the other, I guess its a memorable date and hopefully the game will be finished around then

11.11.11 is an awesome date - its auspicious because its 3 sets of 11s. And furthermore, Americans and Australians cant get confused because they switch the places of month and year when they write dates.

I had a discussion with my friend the other day similar to this about the VGA's we were talking about how many awards Skyrim will definitely win and some they may struggle with and honestly we both agreed that it may not win GoTY just because there are too many CoD players. But It will be close match. I'd even be angry if my favorite FPS BF3 won GoTY over Skyrim. But I'll just have to have faith.

As a massive FPS fan I obviously will not be buying those abominations of my beloved genre, so personally I see no issue. In fact it brilliantly coincides with the end of my Uni year and my christmas/summer/end of year holidays.
Plus its easy to remember in a state of euphoria.

I can assure you that my logic is mostly sound. MW3 already has something like double or triple the preorders that Black Ops had. It's shaping up to be the best selling game of all time. Trying to compete with something like that would be like me hopping into the ring with Mike Tyson and expecting to even put a scratch on him.

I think Skyrim is in a league of its own. I dont think CoD will ever be able to touch it in 2011. Skyrim isnt a FPS per se - its an RPG. Its a shame ME3 wont release this year for E3... I think it would win GoTY if a FPS shooter was to be picked.

I actually used to like CoD until I realized by MW2 that it's just the same game over and over. I mean the only difference is they switched up the guns and made new maps. It's because they release every other year alternating between both developers. If they took as long as say Dice does with BF they could make amazing games. It's a shame really. Also I could do without the stereotype CoD fans I see everywhere. The guys that wear backwards hats and act like frat boys all the time. Eughh.

If there were one GOTY title given out every year and that was it, this might be a concern.

Skyrim's date was set well before MW3 was even announced. I don't know what you're getting at.

It's the holiday season though and they are different genres. I'm sure a ton of people will snatch up Skyrim for Christmas presents as well.

I know for sure that it will win RPG of the year for sure. I'll have to look up other awards but I know there are more.

if its choosing between a game that is on its 10th version in 8 years or a game that is on its 5th version in 17 years, I think I will take the latter.

CoD? Huh?

Seriously... TESV's release date could be any ol' time at all and the same people would buy it. Skyrim has nothing to fear from call of Duty... Also, I think it's a great release date. It's soon enough before Christmas and they got to do that whole S K Y R I M ==> I I · I I · I I in their ads, which is epic.

Nah... Big named games always come out right before xmas every year. They might not do as much sales on opening day but they'll be there on the shelves for the holiday shoppers and that's what counts.

This is not a thread for debating how "good" the Assassins creed series is.

So, I finally got around to checking to see if any MW3 videos had been released since E3, and while watching some spec ops gameplay thing, I saw that the release date for Revelations was 11-15-11. Now, I'm not saying that Assassin's creed is better than ES, but Assassin's Creed has been one of the top selling series for a few years now, and there's no doubt in my mind that there will already be millions of players online by the time Skyrim comes out.

I fixed this to fit my opinion :P I could care less about CoD since they announced the "premium" crap; which is sad since this was the first in a long time i actually planned on buying.

Regardless, ES serves a rather different audience than CoD, so there won't be much, if any impact on their sales.

My shooter isn't MW3 or BF3, and it sure as heck ain't Halo. It's Gears of War *ducks and waits for insults*. So anyway, that means I've got almost a month to play it before Skyrim ruins my life. Not in a bad, I mean it will take it away from me and anytime away from it will be me going into Skyrim withdrawl.

I bought Black ops last year on release day. The Elder Scrolls is my favourite series.

That said, I won't be buying another CoD game for a long time. I have lost respect for Infinity Ward and Treyarch. CoD 4 completley revolutionized online FPS gaming but the other games have just been milking its success. CoD 4 was fun while it lasted. Just like every CoD game is. But Battlefield is still much much much better. And The Elder Scrolls is even better.

Don't know where I was going with that. My point is, if I still bought a CoD game every year then I would buy Skyrim and CoD. But Call of Duty would have to wait until after Battlefield, Saint's Row 3 and Assassin's Creed.

Its easy for people to be a fan of both genres. I am a fan of all genres except party games like Mario Party.
