Did Bethesda pick a bad release date?

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 11:00 am

Couldnt be better, what better than 11.11.11? only 12.12.12

No, what's awesome about 11-11-11 is that it's all one freaking number

Its just so easy to remember. People might think, "was it 12 12 12 or 10 10 10?" 11 11 11 is more easily remembered.

Skyrim's a big boy, it can handle itself whenever it's released.

CoD 4 completley revolutionized online FPS gaming but the other games have just been milking its success.

Yes it is bad they should have released the game 19/08/11  alas they didn't :cold:

More seriously I think if you are a fan of the game it won't matter too much. People will hopefully realise that you get more with Skyrim and will hopefully buy because of that. Even if not then they will buy it eventually maybe a month later for christmas etc.

I don't see to much of an issue there are nearly always going to major releases close to each other. As examples:

August- Deus Ex

September- Gears of War 3

October- Rage, Forza 4, Arkham City, Battlefield 3 (Busy month here) :user:

November is loaded with games, not just CoD. As it usually is, as it's the month before Christmas.

I know that even though I'm getting Skyrim day 1, I'll also be picking up Uncharted 3 on the 1st. Not to mention a few weeks before Uncharted 3 is Batman: Arkham City. October/November is gonna be awesome for games.

They chose a terrible release date, right in the middle of my first University semester :swear: Why couldn't they of released say Summer '09 when I had about 10 weeks off?!

Oh well, at least there's the Christmas holidays...

Wait I just realised this:

Call of Duty obviously has only 3 days worth of playtime so by the time you finish playing it to death, Skyrim will be coming out.

Just gonna have to fight with my fps loving roomate for the larger tv...otherwise I'll be rolling on an old 15 incher in my room :)

Fine by me though, get the whole day off to play the game due to the holiday. Sounds like a perfect day to me.

My shooter isn't MW3 or BF3, and it sure as heck ain't Halo. It's Gears of War *ducks and waits for insults*. So anyway, that means I've got almost a month to play it before Skyrim ruins my life. Not in a bad, I mean it will take it away from me and anytime away from it will be me going into Skyrim withdrawl.

Different strokes for different folks. I can't get over how everything is too huge in that game however so I've been turned off by the series after the first GoW.

I laughed, but mostly because that estimate is ridiculously generous. It took me maybe four hours to complete Stay Frosty Oscar Mike: Ramirez Do Everything.

3 days? That's generous. The single player game will likely be about 4 to 6 hours long again, and the multiplayer will likely become too annoying to continue after the same length of time what with all the screeching, whining 10 year olds that'll be flooding all the servers.

COD svcks and needs to die already. I don't care if COD sells more, it's obvious Skyrim is the better game and not a piece of trash that was poorly built in a couple days including no new features and has a [censored], boring story with tons of explosions like always.

Is there some esoteric reason for releasing it on 111111 ? Perhaps it'll psychologically make the game more exciting than it is? At least there's no confusion about what should come first, the month (US way) or the day (UK way) ?

It doesn't affect me, how many people are not playing Skyrim, I'm still gonna play it. But Bethesda might lose some customers to COD players.

I don't think so. I mean releasing 6 weeks or so before xmas is optimal regardless of what else is coming out. Besides a new COD comes out as often as people change their pants, so who gives a rats ass. It will have ZERO impact on Bethesda's fan base sales, but maybe a small impact on new customers. Those who only have 60 to spare and buy COD might ask for Skyrim for xmas.

Talk about a huge contrast in games though. One is 4 hours of play and the other 400+. What a rip off. I'm done buying COD games.

Ohhhhh but now they have 1 more perk and they added 1 new gun! Oh and you can have TWO scopes your gun now instead of just one! :hubbahubba:

This is an issue only for players interested in both games.

Those who really care will get both.

Those who only care enough to buy one of them ... let's see.

Skyrim: no need to explain why you get more "bang for the buck". Even if you look at it purely from a quantity/content point of view, this game is worth the puchase much, much more.

Another thing to keep in mind: how often do we get a game like Skyrim? And how often do we get a Call Of Duty or the like? Exactly. Unless you're really desperate to start the multiplayer shooting (you could also do with one of the 147 CoD games you already own, anyways) there's little to no reason why you couldn't wait a little longer for the next CoD.

And about games releases in general: you might think it'd be wiser to release a game when there are only few others being released, but there are actually reasons why only few games are being released then.

Overall, Skyrim will do fine.

Another COD game? Bleh no thanks. The only other game I plan on buying this year will be Uncharted 3 on 11.1.11 which I'm sure I'll have played to death by the time 11 more days go by. I can see how a fan of both genres with only $60 to spare might have a difficult choice to make.
