Did Bethesda pick a bad release date?

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 3:29 am

This is not a thread for debating how "good" the CoD series is.

So, I finally got around to checking to see if any MW3 videos had been released since E3, and while watching some spec ops gameplay thing, I saw that the release date for MW3 was 11-8-11. Now, I'm not saying that CoD is better than ES, but CoD has been one of the top selling series for a few years now, and there's no doubt in my mind that there will already be millions of players online by the time Skyrim comes out.

From a financial standpoint, it's just an awful release date, considering many gamers are going to drop $60 dollars on MW3 and play only that game for the next few months. When Oblivion came out (in March if I remember), it was really the only major title released in that month. Fallout 3 did release in the same year as WaW, but WaW never really had as big of a release as other CoD games.

Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way, but isn't it sort of a bad idea to release Skyrim only 3 days after probably the biggest (in terms of sales) title of the year comes out?

The only bad thing about the release date is it isn't here yet.

Hohoho. Seems like you're not up to date with the tides.

BATTLEFIELD 3 IS THE NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN.

I don't think so. Most people, who love both series, will buy both. If they don't like one or the other, then its an easy choice.

No. Skyrim's release date is fine. Not to mention that MW3 and Skyrim are ENTIRELY different, in literally every way imaginable, except that they are both games. I don't think the fanbases cross enough to be concerned.

Honestly I share your concerns. I don't know how CoD does it every single year and still sells incredibly well. But I still have faith in the gamer population to at least buy both games. I'm getting BF3 and Skyrim. I'm glad BF3 comes out earlier than Skyrim so I have a chance to play that before I lose myself in Skyrim for the next couple of months.

There will be alot of competition this time around. There are ALOT of major releases around the same time. In my opinion this is a good year to be a gamer.

It's a great day because 11-11-11 looks cool, and it's just in time for the holiday shopping season.

yeah, I'll be owning both. They're in two different genres. I mean, the only real connection is the First Person POV. But that's it.

I have pre-ordered and completely payed for both games. I made sure to take care of those costs as soon as I ran into a little money.

Halo: Anniversary is a big dog.

November is gonna be big. I'm a huge Halo fan but Skyrim takes priority... not sure when I made that change.

I would assume the release date clashes as Skyrim offers a good alternative to those that don't like online FPS. It is like when blockbuster movies get released you normally only get art house movies released at the same time, for those that hate the Micheal Bay etc.

COD svcks and needs to die already. I don't care if COD sells more, it's obvious Skyrim is the better game and not a piece of trash that was poorly built in a couple days including no new features and has a [censored], boring story with tons of explosions like always.

MW3 might come out three days before Skyrim, but it won't even be a blip on the radar by the eleventh.

This is true as well. I think it's a great move actually. I'm not a huge FPS fan, so I little for MW3 or BF3.

Well, to be fair, Bethesda announced Skyrim in December, and MW3 wasn't announced yet.

Also, since it releases 3 days before, it will keep the CoD fans off here complaining about how Skyrim is "boring."

I wasn't too worried about MW3 being released so close to Skyrim because I assumed my brother (the one who will be buying MW3) would buy it for the system that he owns, the Xbox but lately he's been talking about getting it for the PS3, my PS3 a.k.a the system I'm going to be playing Skyrim on. It's easy to see why I'm more than a little worried as we're both going to want to play our respective purchases a lot.

Deep breath...whew, okay, panicked rant over.

... but umm... yeah.. they might be a little close together.

Although I agree with you that their games are poorly designed. I do like their stories. But it seems that BF3 will blow CoD back to being another wannabe or maybe just maybe it may make activision/treyarch take longer to make their games so they actually are good instead of pumping out a title every year.

There are certainly many people who'll play both games, and perhaps Bethesda will lose some immediate sales by having their release date so close. However I suspect most of those lost sales in the first week or so will be regained by the end of the holiday season.

Then again it's not like people are required to play a game the day they pick it up, we may see a number of people pre-ordering the game with the intention of playing it down the road. Pre-orders often come with good deals and it's unlikely they'll get a better deal before Christmas.

Based on BC2's sales, I doubt that BF3 is going to usurp CoD in sales.

Bethesda needs money in order to make games. I feel like setting the release date 2-3 weeks before MW3 would have been a better option. Releasing any game after MW3 honestly just seems like a terrible idea. It doesn't matter how much you think CoD svcks, it always outsells every other game each holiday season.

I like FPS games but since the early 2000s I feel I've played what I need to play of them. PvP deathmatch is fun between a few people locally to me, so I'll fire up Doom 2 or Hexen or Unreal to play with people I know sometimes, but I'm not into the modern games, especially since the lame "BLOODY SCREEN... SO REAL" gimmick got popular and the number of guns you can carry at once has plummeted.

I'm sure it's a decent game, but I have no interest in it. If I got another game that month it would probably be Uncharted 3 or Rayman Origins.
