Did I just eat crow?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 1:38 am

After playing Witcher 3, I have been pretty hard on Bethesda on what they have done, or lack of what they didn't do.

While yes it's still early, after seeing that Fallout 4 trailer, I can't believe it, I am saying OMG, WOW this looks like it's going to be freaking AWESOME!

Maybe not hearing anything for over 5 years I believed Bethesda got complacent. Proof is still in the pudding but for now, man, I feel like I just had some humble pie with my Crow.

Well done Bethesda, well done.

Can't wait for Fallout 4 now.

That's ok, I thought they'd do a good job and was still surprised :D

There's a few things I'm worried about (no skills?, voiced protagonist, flying power armor, etc.) but I feel confident enough after seeing the E3 presentation to have a wait and see attitude now.

Eating crow is appropriate in the wasteland. Squirrel and iguana are also acceptable cuisine choices.

Yes, FO4 looks completely insane and innovative for the franchise. Only 145 more days! :bonk:

If you thought that trailer was 'AWESOME!' then what were you upset with them about before?

I wouldn't say upset. I guess just seeing Bethesda being so quiet they just seemed complacent. I guess I expected to see Skyrim with Guns. I didn't think Bethesda could pull it off.

I will be so glad to be proven wrong. :D

Yeah that presentation blew my mind. FO4 was completely off my radar after that first trailer untill i saw a gif on Imgur about the presentation.

But still, It's Todd Howard we're talking about. He's amazing at making a demo and getting people hyped about the game, but you've got to take these things with a grain of salt if Oblivion and Skyrim are any indication.

I'm still really hyped about the game, trying not to be but damn... dat demo tho...

Looks an awful lot like Skyrim with guns to me.

I think the problem a lot of posters have is they equate quiet = complacent and that just not the case. Ive got a brother who is in computer game design and has worked for a relatively major label (not Bethesda). He generally dosnt talk about his work (because of NDA's and stuff), but hes incredibly focused on what he does.

just thought Id put that out there. Just because you cant see anything happening, does not mean nothing is happening.

And if Skyrim is just Far Cry 3 with swords...

That makes Fallout 4, Far Cry 3 with guns.

Can Bethesda come up with something original for once?

I'm a huge FO fan that has been playing The Witcher 3, but Bethesda has never been revered for their story writing. I'm not sure if they will be able to top TW3 WH in that category though I will say that have won the crafting category already vs. W3, and that's just seeing it displayed at E3.

It looks more like bioshock and farcry hybrid in the fallout world to me. Which those are good games, just not good rpgs and fallout was a whole different league than those games. Now it's turned into a standard AAA game for the masses, sure it will very successful, but honestly this is a sad time for the fallout franchise.

No skills? Seriously? So, everyone and their cousin is going to be equally good/bad at everything they do? That is NOT an RPG game.....

I'm pretty psyched by what I've seen, myself. I'm as big a fan of the original Fallout games as they come, Fallout 3 wasn't exactly the "sequel" to Fallout I would have wanted to be honest - but in the past 7 or so years I've had plenty of time to come to terms with Bethesda's take on the setting. (We were talking about this in the Moderator forum some time ago - since Fallout 3 came out I've gotten married, had a child, moved half a dozen times and held three or four different jobs.)

I'm certain I'll have some qualms about some of the game mechanics, but on the whole I'm really looking forward to playing this game. Maybe Wasteland 2 helped me scratch that turn-based Fallout itch, maybe 7 years has been enough time for me to move on to the "acceptance" phase -but from I've seen so far from the E3 footage it looks to me like the good's going to outweigh any reservations I might have about some of their other decisions about the game's design.

There are still skill ranks. It just looks like they've been folded into the perks menu.

From the demo, it looks like you could just forgo the main questline and spend your time building a few trade linked settlements. Then try and defend and grow them into larger town areas.

Yes. As mentioned on stage, it's totally optional (like many other parts of the game), but it can also be all consuming. :)

There is skills in some form, but it looks like they have been rolled into perks, and there are going to be minor perk "trees" if you will. Think of a slightly more complex Farcry 3 perk system, with some perks that have ranks.

Like it looks like there is a hacking perk with a few ranks, or the Gun Nut perk with ranks.

So basically they removed skills and turned them into a bunch of filler perks that you gotta get as well as the interesting perks, to give the players more instant satisfaction from "leveling" up.

But yes i agree, they have taken steps away from RPG just from what i saw. It's more like a post apocalyptic first person shooter/hiking simulator/settlement builder. Definitely not the direction i wanted the franchise to go, but it is what it is. I guess i can look forward to a different franchise to scratch my RPG itch.

Then I guess you have never played Skyrim...

Uhm Far Cry 3 is with guns...

Anyway, Fallout 4 looks like mankind has actually progressed somewhat in the 200 years, since the Great War. Even Fallout 1 and 2 were more advanced than say DC in Fallout 3. For me, New Vegas though nailed it. They got it all right, concerning settlements, progression etc. Granted, the area wasn't hit hard, since Robert House protected the region, still, I liked the way everything looked after 200+ years.

So, before saying R.I.P. Fallout, try to be open minded and see what FO 4 has to offer.

Todd Leveled up Massively in his Presentation machine, I still don't like the guy and whom ever else thwacks the design decisions from Oblivion till now, but I'll be damned if I didn't think the guy was awesome in FO4's presentation.

No PR, no Fillers, no mention of Streamlining what so ever (even though there is) and trying to spin it into something positive

Nope just full on awesome presentation mode that had me throwing money at my screen for a series I don't really care about but plays

anyway.

I was blown away by the presentation, still getting it day one but I've already accepted the fact that it won't be a good RPG due to some design choices. I'm willing to eat crow on that statement but past history says otherwise.
