Did I set a new forum record?

Post » Sun Feb 20, 2011 11:00 am

What do you guys think about the way there are 200 post limits to topics?

Do you guys agree or disagree? I'd love to hear your opinions!

I don't know if it's the fastest to reach post-limit, but there were, at the times I happened to notice, upwards of three-hundred-seventy people reading your thread, probably more when I didn't look. That's got to be at least close to some record.

If mods were paying attention this might get locked in record time.

Sapphirine was apparently the first to receive the February issue of GameInformer, or at least the first to post about it. Thus, a great many people flocked to the thread to find out what information the cover story held on Skyrim.

While you might have got a lot of views with the thread, I'm afraid the thread for the post record tops 523 posts. This is what happens when Mods aren't there. ;)

What about back when the forums got hacked? IIRC they temporarily lifted the limit so that they people didn't have to keep making new threads every 15 minutes, and I could have sworn it got well above that. 'Course, I could just be remembering wrong.

Well did the servers break down by overload or did it ran as usual?

It was perfectly normal. But this was only one topic. A single topic going so far over the limit isn't going to do anything... I think the concerns of the admins are more about what would happen in every single topic on this forum was allowed to go far past 200 posts.

Yeah, I think what would happen is the same that happens to every single forum on the internet: absolutely nothing. Unless the servers are really, really old, which I very much doubt.

I think it is more as a method of keeping things on topic. A lot of threads you would end up with it just being spam by 15 pages. Recreating it allows it to get back on topic and is a check as to if it is worth continuing the discussion.

Why? The mods pay attention to everything on these forums.

If the OP had http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/724862-forum-rules-and-general-information/page__view__findpost__p__10470780 they would have seen the reasons for the 200 post limit, although the servers are more than capable of handling large topics it is one of keeping threads on topic, making a second - or more - threads on the same subject is not a problem and as they are usually linked back to the previous ones it is really no different having a thread of 1000 posts to having 5 with 200 posts in each.

The one slight annoyance is that the old threads then get deleted.

But then I quite like the fact that old threads are deleted, especially in CD.

Yep, this happened in I think thread VII or IX of the GI cover reveal thread. That was before they even revealed it too! It went from 1 to 200 in like 8 minutes I think :P

Exactly, just as Cuddly Bear said. As it states in the forum rules most topics get off topic or have started asking the same question by the time they hit 200 posts and creating a new thread can breathe some fresh air into the discussion.

Nothing really...we were all just merrily posting away, then Dogsbody suddenly appeared online...I think there were a couple of posts actually that said that he was back...and he called time on the thread. AFAIK, there weren't any warnings given or anything like that...it was a light-hearted thing, not intended to annoy/bypass anything. Was pretty fun :D

When I go to a forum, and see 1000+ post threads, I move on.

Here, even if the discussion has many previous posts I don't mind starting late and reading all 200 posts in the latest thread. It really does seem to help keep a topic fresh and not overwhelming for me. (Short attention span.)

That thread doesn't hold the record for most replies. I can remember at least one thread that had over a thousand posts, actually it had a lot more than 1000 posts, a lot more. It was the thread for Grumpy. :/ It was eventually deleted automatically when people stopped posting in it.

Does anyone remember how many posts it had? All I remember is that it was huge

Still, there are threads in the admin/mod forum that top every thread I've ever seen on here :P

The longest is one of the old warnings topic that has 2346 posts in it. The longest current thread is 1170 which is one we discuss any aspect of happenings on the forums. We do eventually close them and make a new one but some are never deleted and have posts going back to 2006.

What was that about exactly?

Oh and I do believe the 500+ post thread is the longest thread that can still be read (in some form) and that non-mods can access.
