Did the map maker get fired? He should have.

These " maps " are the worse I have ever seen in ANY video game.

Almost completely worthless. Just blobs of yellow and very restricted spanning and scanning. Although you can zoom in and out ... and move around a wee bit --- it isn't very much.

Whoever decided to make such [censored] maps should be FIRED.

You're talking about the pip boy maps? I think it was probably part of the UI design's visual direction. Coming from Skyrim, it's quite different but coming from Fallout 3.. it's pretty much the same. It could use some finesse, but I don't think anyone should be fired over it.

One problem I do have with it is how large the icons seem to be. They seem to get in the way of each other in the denser areas.

The map design is to emulate a old map style from old computer, that why it look like it. Ppl complain about close maps really u shouldn't be using it, never understand why they allow u to get to close map, the information display there has no real value at all.

It would be nice with a couple of different colors and also make the map topographical. It's super simplistic, which is ok, but this is pretty extreme.

Yeah but is again a decision make for art style, Remember that the technology they try to emulate on the game used to be like that, that why the map have 0 topological and is just 1 color (original green bc it use to be green the color of old computer)

For me doesnt meter much bc add a nice touch to the whole world.

No problems here. The pip boy interface is supposed to look retro and simplistic. First time I've heard of this complaint. Turn off all quest markers except for the one you need and use the compass to find your way.

I feel like you're a couple years late in making this complaint.

I personally don't have any problems with the map. Much better than Google Skyrim's map that doesn't work all that well as an actual map. Now what I DO find useless is the local map. That thing will never be helpful in navigating. Only been useful in finding a doorway I didn't know was in the area.

That is what we're talking about right?

See I use the map for direction as I turn the compass off. I prefer having a clean screen and consult my Pip-Boy, like I would IRL. So a slightly better map is desirable. I do like the retro look, but a bit more detail would be nice. Like if we could find a software update somewhere in the Institute for instance =)

I'd have killed for some sort of z axis toggle for the map. That way I could look at just the floor I want. As it stands, if the building has more then one floor I dont even bother with the map.

I think it gets the job done. In previous Fallouts I've had trouble with the local map since you can't toggle floors- you have to be on a floor for it to be displayed.

I am REALLY liking the trade routes view, though.

=========

Yes, the local map is much worse than the World Map. You can make out the towns etc. fine on the World Map but the local map is horrendous, whether on my Pip Boy app or on the computer monitor. It would be better if they didn't even give us a local map because one tends to try to use it and that is nothing but frustrating.

I'm surprised no one has come out with GOOD local maps of the cities / towns --- or maybe they have and I just haven't heard about them.

While I'm not going to be "that guy" and demand anyone be fired, the local maps are pretty much useless when navigating in the more vertically designed environments. Not sure why the concept of a 3D map of some sort that you can actually rotated on a few axis should be beyond the Fallout Pip-Boy technology.

On the other hand the fact that you can't pull up your pip-boy and find a way into or out of area does enhance the exploration aspect of the game...

I agree that the local map is pretty much the same, but the problem is that the map designs have changed quite a bit with many multi-level and overlapping areas that make a 2D, top down map fairly useless in terms of pathing assistance.

I don't think it would be too difficult impossible for the game to serve you up the map for a particular floor based on your z height, to be honest.

i dont know, i have never find useful the map on ES or Bethesda game, i mean local maps. General maps are ok for direction but them on a close level is more exploration and i really dont like to have a map for it. (really havent find a single place where is to hard to find the way around it)

Another ridiculous extreme consequence over a game. Fire him! I would love to know how 'perfect' everyone is who make comments like that. Probably a kid who doesn't even work yet, and hasn't had a chance to screw up in a job. Your tune will change once you are out there. I work at a college and students are always complaining about how everyone is "incompetent" around them, but they never address the fact they're the impetus for pretty much every bad thing that befalls them.

The map have been the same sinse Fallout 1, wake up and smell the roses.

If the game had an super high tec map funtion it would go against the immersion and the timeframe the game is set in.

If you have not noticed the game has a 1950/1960′s style to it.

Ah yes, i remember turning off the compass in Skyrim and it became a completely different game. I had to use my eyes. I might try that again for FO4, but I really need to get my pip boy app up and running.

There is a difference between retro and useless. And the local map is utterly useless on multifloor maps.

There is literally almost no need for a map in this game beyond the very generalized map they give you (showing settlements and locations). Just explore the game and you'll figure out where everything is, unless you are a child with no spatio-temporal cognitive abilities whatsoever.
