Did The Vault-Tec Salesman Seem...Nervous?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 2:02 pm

While I don't think he has any real knowledge as to when exactly the bombs were gonna drop...I mean if House didn't know...I doubt the sales guy did, even working for Vaultec. However I have to say after just re-watching the E3 video, his hands look so plastic. So...bad. Its weird, almost seems intentional. I wonder if anyone else really agrees with me but damn, in my opinion his hands seem almost oversized or something, def get a uncanny valley kind of vibe about it, like something feels off and when you think about it beside his demeanor its his hands!

His hands....

I think he's the Fallout universe's equivalent of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhJFr-EM4FM from The Simpsons.

He has the kind of face/voice combo that somehow seems inherently annoying but could be creepy as [censored] if used the right way. Imagine waking up and seeing his face right up against yours. Or looking out a window and their the Vault Tec rep is standing. Watching. And when you go out he's not there anymore. Or hearing his nasally, excited voice somewhere nearby but not being able to find the source. Or seeing someone in a hat and a trenchcoat and thinking 'Aha! Gotcha now you SOB!' and you run up and talk to them and then when he turns around it's not him and when YOU turn around to leave he's standing behind you in a Vault 111 suit going 'Why heeellooooo there!'

Thats horror on par with Dunwich IMO.

If you ever heard his voice out in the wastes I'd bet it stop you cold, dead in your tracks: "No...he's dead, everybody died." "He's dead, has to be".

The Vault-tec representative seems affable and typical "salesman friendly" at first.

It's not until the Player Character allocates point to their stats that the NPC seems to show marked nervousness.

I suspect there may be something in the PC's back-story that might later warrant an "ah-ha, that's why the NPC was scripted to seem nervous" moment after the fact, later in the game's story.

As far as the rep wanting to get gone as quick as possible for selfish reasons, I think the clip shows the rep stuck outside the gates to the vault. That NPC might not have a reservation berth in any vault, and is plausibly just some paid mug that's cheaper to employ than a protectron that could do the same job.

I think the purpose of that NPC is for reinforcement of the prewar-future-retro atmosphere, an interaction point for points distribution, and very minor story development with the nervous behavior, but, is otherwise a throw-away NPC, unlike the recurring G-Man in Halflife or something.

Off-topic: In the trailer, those two guys in power armor suits standing next to the fence, while people are going through. Stupid question but I have to ask. When the bombs drop, could the power armor suits withstand the blast wave/fire or would they be vaporized?

More than likely they would be vaporized, but if they were not in the direct blast, say behind a rock or something they should be okay. We know that some how the PC survived the blast so I'm sure the soldiers could of.

I honestly think he's just a throwaway character that acted nervous because, y'know, the end of the world is nigh and he probably doesn't want to die.

I can see the Vault-tec guy being nervous not from knowing the bombs are about to blow, but in that Vault-tec is probably privvy to more detailed information than what's been broadcast to the public on the news. We know from past game lore that disaster drills were being practiced to the point that it was a "Boy who cried wolf" situation when the bombs really did hit, so I can see rep guy possibly knowing that there's been reports of airfields being more heavily manned which likely wouldn't've been publicly broadcast. It'd be enough to make one nervous about what if this is it this time but that it might still just be another tick on the doomsday clock.

That's because this is a game.

He's not an android, they weren't made at that time.

SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!

Spoiler
They planned on doing a Fallout movie, years ago. In this movie, you find out that Vault Tech launched the first bomb to initiate the nuclear holocaust in order to fulfill their own prophecy. If he was nervous, it was simply because he knew that the bombs were about to hit and he wanted to either secure his spot in a vault or commit suicide.

I found it on Nukapedia regarding The Great War (AKA World War III) at the bottom of the article.

Yeah, but since the movie was never made...it's not canon. Any more then Vault-Tec having a private Vault for its employees is canon.

He would be nervous to if he came to my door. I hate salesmen. The door would have been slammed shut before he finished his first sentence.

Notice how for someone "seemingly" with knowledge about the bombs dropping within minutes, he really isn't seen hauling ass down the road when you first slam the door in his face. You see him just kinda saunter off in the window as the character looks towards the wife.

Even as he approaches the home, it's nothing sketchy, or nervous or panicky.

He just looked like a normal "happy" salesman to me.

To the "He knew the bombs were about to drop" theory : Why would Vault-Tec salesman #XYZ know this. And even if he did, why would he waste time he could spend getting to safety asking random suburban guy #123 (at least to him) to confirm his information? I've seen said that the timing is too convenient for him to ask to when the bombs drop but the only convenience I see is a good excuse to have you plug in some basic information.

If anything he was probably just worried that his android was going to run away in the future...
