Did you use enchanted weapons in Oblivion?

Post » Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:50 am

Just curious to see what people feel about this, since Beth said they were happy with it.

I was quite disappointed that they use a similar system to Oblivion in Skyrim. I personally never used enchanted blades and such because of the silly battery-like recharge system.

I use them a lot (I'm not going to turn down a god/goddess-created weapon with a cool history and appearance of its own and there's no harm in using the enchanted version of any non-godly weapon that has an un-enchanted form... simply a lack of benefits if not recharged.), but they were often out of charge (except for my beloved Dawnfang/Duskfang... it kind of naturally recharges) and I hated the requirement to manually recharge to get any enchanted use out of enchanted weaponry. I hope Skyrim doesn't have it, but according to the Q and A, it will. What I want to know is where they got the idea that it worked well from.

yes but I was often out of charge I guess the manual recharging was ok because they did so much damage
maybe there should be more options to recharge them with

always used enchanted weapons with soul trap, and carried Azuras star. recharging them seemed clunky. can't you just have something like soultrap that keeps the weapon full?

I feel like some artifact weapons shouldn't lose their charge.

I did use enchanted weapons in Oblivion on occassion, but less often than I did in Morrowind, due to how annoying the recharging mechanic of Oblivion was, of course, I didn't use enchantments at all except in clothing and jewelry for the most part until I had at least 50 in armorer, for reasons I probably don't have to explain, but that's a subject for another discussion.

Obviously, I did not like Oblivion's approach to enchantment recharges, I'd have much rather gone back to Morrowind's system, but such is life.

Well, I would like to see some enchanting perk allowing some slow, automatic recharging of enchanted items. Possibly draining your magicka (while an upper level-perk could reduce or suppress this feature). Souls gems could be used to fasten the recharging. A higher level in enchanting school could make items recharging at a faster pace.

Also, sompe legendary weapons could simply never get out of charge. But they should be very rare and costy.

Used enchanted weapons very rarely because I found the recharge mechanic extremely tedious.

Would like to see a recharge over time mechanic, or for weapons to have passive enchantments like Armour, as standard. I'd rather not have waste perks just to render enchanted weapons usable.

how about this as an enchanting perk?

"soul reaper:

when a weapon is enchanted with a soul gem it acquires the power of the enchantment and when depleted of charges that enchanted weapon becomes a soul trap weapon that recharges bit by bit with each kill, when the charges are full again the weapon becomes enchanted once more. "

Or this one,

Old Timer:

You remember how things used to work back when TES was good and fun. Your enchantments recharge, classes are back, the creatures aren't all generic, and attributes haven't been removed.

Yes I used the all the time, I bought all sort of soul gems from vendors, different levels and had a sword with a 1 second soul trap enchantment, in addition to 8 damage health enchantment for 1 second. If I killed a rat, I got the soul back and refilled it with a petty soul gem. A stronger enchantment would have left me out of use, so it's merely a solid buff than a super sword and that's how I like it.

I usually carried one around for those enemies that were immune to normal weapons, or for enemies that are more difficult. Most of the time I used a regular weapon.

Or just use them until they are depleted and then sell them.

I think I never bothered to use them, mainly because the charges often ran out during/after a single fight. So instead I just used an unenchanted silver weapon (I believe most guards in the IC had a silver longsword so I staged 'accidents' and picked up any stray silver arrows). Later on in the game I used Daedric weapons.

Personally I would have rather liked weapon enchantments to provide a solid bonuses (and weaknesses, depending on the soul that was used in its creation) instead of charges; but that's just me. ;)

EDIT: Can't recall ever to have used Soul Trap either in Oblivion. I did use it a lot in Morrowind though.

Greetz,

Milt

Never used soul trap, seemed to find filled gems everywhere, didn't have a problem with recharging, but then I used fairly weak enchantments, rather than expecting the very best enchantments and loads of charges.

Basically all my weapons were enchanted. However, I had considerable luck finding both filled soul gems and Varla stones, and I had a recharge over time mod, so it wasn't that bad.

Personally I hated it, the weapons had to be recharged all the time and that just resulted in that I used them without the charge.
I didn't like effects that much or that plastic glow, so I usually just preffered ordinary weapons.
I did use those fancy artifacts but they aswell were always out of charge.
I hope that the weapons in Skyrim deal more damage but have weaker enchantments.(Actually I think they already said that weapons deal more damage, so I think I will be satisfied)

Best weapons in the game... until they ran out of juice and/or you couldn't repair them because you weren't skilled* enough.

I hope that in Skyrim you can set them onto an automatic charge. I'm going to have to hunt down Azura's star either way. On OB I just hotkeyed it to the d-pad.

I loved enchanting, but I did hate having to recharge, especially since I didn't know what soul gems were for when I got Azura's Star.

Unfortunately they're using the same recharge system, but maybe a perk will help or something. That would be awesome. I definitely intend to look through that perk tree, even if I don't put any perks into enchanting.
