Diehard Fallout 3 fan: what to expect from Fallout New Vegas

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 12:55 pm

Why do people insist that New Vegas isn't open world and ripe for exploration?

Because they can't go north right off the bat. They don't like that there are things in the game they can't kill at level one with a varmint rifle. So they have a hissy fit and complain that the game isn't open world. As for there not being enough to explore, well they aren't tying hard enough, again it ties in with things to hard for them to kill. Also some people don't play New Vegas as an RPG but as a FPS.

Soon and very soon I'll know for myself if Fallout New Vegas is in the same league as Fallout 3. I'm going to go into FNV as if it's the best game on the planet then the game itself will have to prove me right or wrong. You know, we can't forget that we all like different kinds of games. FNV will have to be one hell of a game to beat Fallout 3, but I'm going to give it a very fair chance and I hope after playing it, I can say that it is in my top 20 favorite games, or so. But, if FNV doesn't meet my expectations that's no big deal. All of these are just games after all.

I am glad you are giving New Vegas a fair shot. Maybe after you will consider giving Fallout, Fallout 2 and Tactics as shot as well. :fallout:

You go into anything like that and you're bound to be disappointed.

I think you misunderstand me Seb. I'm giving the game every benefit of the doubt. I can't see a better way to approach a new game. If I go into it with a positive attitude, that can only help my chances. If after that I still don't like it, I can say I tried my best.

Because they are too use to Bethesda style exploration, which is you can go off and do whatever right away and kill everything.

I prefer New Vegas's exploration to be honest.

Kinda sad, isn't it?

Always annoys me when people call the entire game linear just because it actually had the balls to tell you "no" for the first 5 hours of gameplay.

Indeed, but hey having to do that first "tutorial" section of Skyrim everygame for like half and hour or more is just fine and isn't linear in anyway right? :D

It means you use the iron sight of the gun to aim. You can in Fallout New Vegas but not in Fallout 3.

The funny part is, if they had stopped and thought for a moment they would have realized that you actually can go north right off the bat provided you do so carefully. In fact, you can enter the hills outside Sloan and follow them to the 188 Trading Post, with no encounters aside from a couple of easily killed Bark Scorpions.

@the OP:

One thing you'll find right off the bat is that you'll need to be more careful at low levels, as most non-DLC encounters are not leveled to the player. You can still go anywhere you want to, but some locations are insanely dangerous for a low-level character. Which is part of why some folks call the game 'linear', since they don't like the idea that there are places that a low-level character really shouldn't be poking around in.

That statement is incorrect. You have the option to use VATS but I've killed many creatures using iron sights. As a matter of fact many people prefer iron sights in Fallout 3 and use them often if not exclusively, so while you can use iron sights in Fallout New Vegas, you can also use them just as much in Fallout 3. I hope I've cleared that up for you.

And for the love of god dont [censored] about how hard deathclaws and cazadores can be in your first few hours and if you do well the game warns you many times in a variety of ways, well unless it was near the the tunnel to the north leding to the boomers

Fallout 3 has ''nicer scenery"? I don't think so. Fallout 3 doesn't have iron sights.

Yep it is possible but people that try to play Fallout New Vegas as a FPS and not a RPG will have little to no chance to figure it out. "What I can't kill that deathclaw with my varmint rifle? Come on I am already at level 2 I should be able to kill anything :swear: " Then they have their hissy fit and say the game isn't open world.

Well I played all of my characters as snipers, with and without VATS. So without VATS it would be iron sights with a scope if you understand what I mean...unless you consider using scope not iron sights then I don't know where that type of sighting would fit in, but I see that you meant iron sights in the strictest sense of the word. Ok so that would be fun to use and play with but that doesn't make it a good game yet. I'll still have to play it before I weigh in. Possibly that clears things up for you Styles on my iron sight point of view. No worries mate. I just wanna play the damn game now to see if New Vegas is good or not.

It all depends on how you view ironsights really. Most people will tell you that looking through a weapons predifined, stock sights are the ironsights; while looking through the sights added on as a scope or a non magnifying sight would not constitute as such. Again however, it all depends on how you view the word ironsights and how they function or are used at any given point in time.

I think Iron Sites is a good thing but it alone isn't what makes Fallout New Vegas better than Fallout 3 IMO. I get what you mean about the scopes Gardenia but New Vegas lets you use iron sites on weapons that don't have scopes and aren't shoot from the hip weapons like mini guns.

New Vegas is a great game and Fallout 3 is a great game in its own right. But like you said Gardenia you need to play it for yourself to form your own opinion. I hope you will also someday give Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics a try as well if you haven't already. :fallout:

Because he's Styles the Originator, and beleives anyone who calls themself a fan of the series should try the originals. Most of us Dino's share this viewpoint. :P
