Differences Between Night and Day

Post » Tue Apr 12, 2011 6:39 pm

Never been a fan of really dark, darkness. Those "make the caves & nights pitch black" mods..... eh.

Of course, few games outside of some survival-horror ones will ever do that (Silent Hill, I'm looking at you!), because yeah - most people like to be able to actually play. :)

(Kind of like, "dark" in most movies and TV shows tends to just be the same scene, lit more blue-ish. Yeah, it's "unrealistic". But you kind of have to see what's happening.)

Fast travel block, No (It removes the point of fast travel, though chance of a random encounter might not be so bad).

Everything else, YES PLEASE!!!!

-Fast travel: In order to make getting caught in the wilderness at night feel like an actual danger, you shouldn't be able to click on a magic map and safely transport to a town or inn. It'd be interesting if you had to plan your travels to avoid getting caught in the wilderness at night or run the risk of facing increased danger.

dear god, sir, you have just solved the fast travel problem! :celebration:

Only for those who think there's a "problem" that needs to be solved.

the point is that with this solution there can be no complaints.

I'm sure the people who think there's no problems at all with Oblivion's implementation of FT, would have complaints about making it unusable a good portion of each day.

Indeed, plus I'd say that it'd be easier to avoid detection on foot at night, thus having less interruptions would make sense.

No. Pitch blackness is good.
I'm tired of every game I play having fully lit nights.
-Atleast- cut the view distance down by 4/5 or something.

Edit: It would also make sneaking at night -much- more natural.

And@PPS, But pitch black is not realistic, I use to hike on this trail in the woods, no artifical light, during the night, I could still see without much problem. I must have walk at night in the woods at least 100 times. Now if it was cloudy that night, thats different. One time I was with a friend in the woods at night and a shower came along, no stars, no moon and rain just to be annoying. We crawled around and used bic lighters to see for two hours before we found are way back to the car.

but what about the all the beasts who roam at night? All good fantasy stories have evil nights.

I've been thinking about a way to make Skyrim feel more realistic and I thought it'd be interesting if nighttime and daytime felt significantly different. Rather than just being slightly darker, perhaps night in Skyrim could be dangerous.

There are a few ways this could be implemented:

-Nocturnal creatures: irl, night brings out some dangerous predators. Maybe in Skyrim, giant spiders venture out of the caves at night, or maybe wolves are more prone to hunt.

-Nocturnal NPCs: I'd like to see werewolves and vampires as extremely dangerous foes, coming out only at night. If you travel during the day, you know you're safe, but if you get caught in the wilderness at night, you run a serious risk of getting attacked.

-Criminals: This could be implemented not just in the wilderness, but also in the towns and cities. NIghttime should increase the chances of falling victim to muggings and the like.

-Darkness: If you've ever been out in a forest at night, far away from city light, you know that it can get pitch black: so dark that you'd run into trees without a light source. I think on certain nights, perhaps when the moon isn't out or there's a lot of cloud cover, you should need a torch to see where you're going. Imagine walking through a forest in the dark and being able to hear a creature follow you through the trees, but not be able to see it until it pounces :o It could add a ton of excitement to otherwise uneventful travel.

What do you think?

Good idea's probably submit this ona pc modding site; especially the last idea that one wont ever be in mass market console games.

Also as tech goes.....probably could only be done on pc; using 10.1 or 11 lighting techniques. I could go into detial but it would be TDRL ......dynamic light sources, occlusion..ect. What would be nice if at night if someone used a spell that has an extreme light source your eyeballs freak out.....

example: arma 2 at night going from using nightvision to not using or if a flashbang goes off ect.

As for getting snuck up on by NPC's i feel that, that is only fair why cant one be assassinated, hunted, ambushed ect.
>>walking around at night need to deliver a note to some guy for some quest and bam randomly out of nowhere just got wtf'd by a pack of wolves or some bandits.
Or we could hold back on experiences like this ^ because "it scares some people" or "its to hard"......

Also rendered FOG instead of decrease draw distance please :).

Good ideas, but a little too Minecrafty for my likings. Plus it would scare the living [censored] out of me. If they did implement this, I'd hope it would only be on some kind of hardcoe mode.

I almost completely agree. What I don't agree on is the pitch dark. This is a game so it doesn't need to be that realistic. That would just frustrate me if I can't see at night even if it's only sometimes.

It doesn't have to be pitch dark but it definitely should be darker than vanilla oblivion. Not only does it make sense that its harder to see but you might have to actually use nighteye or light potions or a torch something I never once felt the need to do in OB.
