A different way of getting on The Strip (Spoiler)

Post » Wed Nov 17, 2010 10:53 am

As it seems many people have experienced, there are some glitches and bugs in Fallout New Vegas. For a while I was exempt to them, but then after meeting Mr House and leaving The Strip the first time when I tried to get back on The Strip, my game would lock up on the load screen. Needless to say, I was pissed since I had logged over 30 hours and was on level 18. My other save was unharmed and only the autosave was corrupted, so I trudged on through the wastes just exploring. While I taking up new quests, I received on from Hsu in McCarren Camp wanting to find out who is the mole in their camp. When you complete the quest and get to the monorail mentioned by Mr New Vegas on the radio, the monorail will take you on The Strip. Please keep in mind that I have not left The Strip since arriving (since I'm scarred I won't get back lol) so I have no idea if that particular glitch is repaired at the north gate. I'm just glad I didn't have to scrap that whole game.

In regards to the glitch:
From Fallout NV: Wiki - In the Debt Collector quest, if you kill Caleb McCaffery, there will be a blackscreen crash every time you try to load The Strip and the autosave will become corrupted. The only known way around this is to equip an Old Cowboy Hat whenever you try to load The Strip.

I've tested the Old Cowboy Hat fix and it does work (its the same model hat that Caleb wears)

And I did kill him...so all I have to do is find someone who is selling any old cowboy hat, wear it when I travel onto the strip and problem is resolved???

You'll have the wear the old cowboy hat each time you enter the strip, but you can remove it once you're past the main gate. Its not a "fix", but it is a work-around.

I found some being sold at Mick and Ralph's (Ralph specifically)

Thanks I really appreciate it. I mean it's awesome that the monorail works and all but it only takes you to the mid area in the strip so I really have no idea if I can even get to the area where I killed him and if the hat works, I'll deal with it. Since speech, barter, etc are such a big deal in this game I carry around a bunch of different outfits anyway. What's one more hat. Thanks so much again. If that and the other really minor bugs are my only problem in this huge game, I will be extremely happy. Over all I'm still really happy with the game. I know everyone else is super pissed and ready to lynch Bethesda and Obsidian but come on, it really is a huge game, it's bound to have bugs. I'm not ready to lynch (yet) but they really should get the patches soon.

You're welcome :)

I thought my game was totally FUBAR until I happened across this work around. So glad it works, otherwise my game would be put on hold until a patch came out to fix it.
